Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter issues: please help.

I have tried everything that came up in my mind, called MS tech. support and, when they answered to the phone finally, tried everything they suggested... the result ? Bug report submitted by their customer representative to inquire about the particular router problem and the Xbox 360.

Ok, details :)...

The router is a U.S. Robotics 8054 upgraded to the latest firmware available on the company's web-site.

Have you heard bad things about the compatibility of this router and the Xbox 360 or the Xbox 1 with their respective Wireless Adaptors ?

The SSID is broadcasted (normally it is not, but to make 100% sure the Xbox 360 could see the connection I decided to do this) and the connection is working in Mixed mode, being able to accept both 802.11b and 802.11g connections (this lapto and the PSP support 802.11b and other PC's in this house connect with a 802.11g connection without problems).

A WEP key is used, but I selected Open System WEP on the Router which basically means that the WEP key is not used in the authentication process that allows a device to connect to the Wireless Network, but if those devices will send packets not encripted with the right WEP key those packets will be dropped (with Shared Key WEP clear text followed by its encipted version basically is exchanged between the Rpouter and the Wireless client... a device needs the right WEP key to connect to a Wireless Network, but this solution ends up being less secure than Open System because of the Connection process).

Could it be that Open System WEP (the key is 64 bits long) is not supported while Shared Key WEP is ? With PSP it was the complete obviously if you can believe it (see an old post of mine here where I was crying foul, stupidly, because my PSP would connect to the Internet only if I set the Router up with Open System WEP).

There is MAC filtering turned on, but the Xbox 360's Wireless Adapter's MAC address was added to the "white-list" of allowed MAC addresses (btw, I did try with MAC filtering disabled :(): I got the address of the Wireless Adaptor from the Xbox 360 GUI's Network connections settings (Advanced Settings->Wireless Information which btw outputs this:

Device: USB Wireless

MAC Address: 00-12-5A-4C-AE-23

Serial: 08260256995540

Firmware Version: 4.3.19.1

Hardware Version: A
)

Edit:

Another interesting thing is that the Wireless MAC Address it gives me here is the same that in the previous screen appears as the Wired MAC Address, but I assume it is using the Wireless MAC Address instead of its Ethernet Interface's one, just thought it would list them both.

When doing the LIVE connection test, it detects the USB Wireless Adaptor (the official MS one for the Xbox 360), but it fails at the connection step (Wireless Network test's result is Not Connected) with the following error code:

W: 0000 - 0000

X: 8000 - 001D

Y: 0000 - 0000

Z: 0000 - 0000

Edit:

I have restored Factory defaults, starting from scratch... found the network, added the WEP key and all and leaving the IP and DNS addresses to DHCP and the error changed to:

W: 0000 - 0000

X: 8000 - 0011

Y: 0000 - 0000

Z: 0000 - 0000

When I let the Xbox 360 search for available Networks it is able to see the right Wireless Network by its SSID with a low strength, but still some signal strength nonetheless and from exactly the same spot my laptop can dialog with the WiFi Router quite satisfyingly.

The funny thing ? When it lists all the connections it sees, it says next to the one I want it to connect as "Connected" (only in that screen though... kinda pulling my leg there old buddy Xbox 360 :P ?).

I think I gave you guys enough details, but please feel free to ask if you think it might be useful to analyze further data.

I hope this is not SCE's revenge of me for not waiting to get PLAYSTATION 3 first and getting the Xbox 360 :P.

Thanks for any help you migth provide guys and gals :).

Why do people bother going wireless w/ stationary devices? I don't understand that.

Let me see if I can explain it:

Xbox 360 ======== my room.

Router ========= a whole other part of the house.

;).

Well, if you're renting a place (or even own it) and the router and one computer is up a flight of stairs and maybe 50 feet plus from the 360 it sort of isn't worth it to run a wire all the way down (plus it looks like shit unless you run it through the walls or something). Just a convenience thing. If it's a short distance, though, I agree wired is the way to go.

Well, if your router is the culprit, which I gather is what M$ is tellingyou, you're going to have to do one of thw two things you're trying to avoid (router replacement or cat5).

The MS guy was not clear on that... I shall see about what to do... This router pisses off everyone here, but since it still works nobody wants to spend 10+ Euros to buy a new one :(.

the first thing to do is to disable all security and see if it works.

I'll try this, I was thinking this Open System vs Shared Key WEP thing... if only the Xbox 360 console let you specify which one to use... I bet they did it on purpose to go against the PSP if that is what the problem is :P.

That is th eonly thing I did not do... probably because the thought of "what do I do if it only works without WEP ?"

And even if it works with WPA I am not too happy... I do not think this WiFi card (NETGEAR) that I am using on this laptop supports WPA :(.

When I can try this solution I will update this thread again.

Because I live in a nice house that I would like to sell in the next couple of years with as few eyesores as possible. I'm not about to go drilling holes through walls and the ceiling to run a wire.

My router is upstairs, in the middle of the house. My entertainment center is downstairs about 40 feet away from the router and there is no possible way to run a wire downstairs without drilling a hole somewhere in the ceiling, or through several walls.

No WEP security (disabled), no MAC filtering... what a safe network :P... still, the Xbox 360 will REFUSE to connect to the Wireless network :(.

Holy macaroni. First time I heard this problem on a forum. I got the exact same router and the same problems. No matter what I try I cant get it to work.

Different encryption, different channels, changing speeds and I dont know what, I tried everything and it is making me nuts.

I had the old firmware still installed on the 8054 and when I upgraded it and then tried the Test live it went thru the test with succes but after a second it didnt work anymore. My laptop is working fine with Wifi but the Xbox360...no go sadly.

I do not believe it... well, maybe if we keep being vocal about it (I will e-mail U.S. Robotics about it and I think all of us should).

Maybe some features in the old firmware were more compatible... maybe we should try to turn off the >54 Mbps features (how about trying the original firmware in the Router ?) like Turbo and Frame Bursting (IIRC those are some of them, but I am not at home or nowhere near a USR 8054 manual at the moment).

Older firmware? I had 1.4 or something like that on the machine before I upgraded it to 1.6? I tried turning of turbo and frame bursting and whatnot..I nearly tried turning off/on every option. Im at school now so I cant try older firmware versions, will try that when im home again. Will mail or call USR soon :)

Ethernet wallplates work great. Everyone's house is different, but I was able to do this myself w/ no problem.

The oldest firmware for the USR 8054 (1.21h: http://www.usr-emea.com/support/s-prod-template.asp?loc=itly&prod=8054 ) works wonders.

Warning: best to set it with Internet Explorer... with Mozilla Firefox 1.5 the interface gave some small problems and it is best to go the safest way possible when downgrading the firmware (the default IP address of the router should be 192.168.123.254 with the old firmware).

It looks like USR has a nice bug-hunt to go on :).
