XBox dirty disc error (new)

So I was playing rallisport 2 and while the game was saving my progress from a race I just completed... out of nowhere this screen flashes on my screen:

rallisportdirty.jpg

The system completely locks up.

1: Has anyone else seen this? It doesn't look like the standed warning but one that is specific to this game. So there may be a bug in the game.

or 2:

This is actually a problem with my POS Thomson drive

which leads me to

3: how do I clean the XBox disk drive. Will the normal DVD laser cleaners work?

I had the same problem playing Rallisport 2. It seems to be one of those games that really brings the old drives to their knees.

I'm playing through Shenmue II right now and I am constantly getting disc read errors. If I pause the game for to long, or stay in one place so the disc isn't being read to much, it freezes. What's the deal with the Thompson drive thing? Am I affected by it if I bought my Xbox in July 2002? I keep my Xbox in a dust free environment, that is well ventilated when I use the system. I buy only new games and dvd's, so I don't think it is a dirt problem. I do watch dvd rentals on the Xbox, but I always clean the discs before use. I have used a lens cleaner before when I had some trouble with Medal of Honor: Frontline, but it didn't seem to help. Does anyone know what might be the cause of my problem?

Thanks Redbeard that gives me comfort knowing this is at least partially due to the game and not all hardware.

Guys, is the error screen you are getting the same as the one pictured above. Or is it the green/black error screen that comes on when you power-on the XBox. I'm trying to find out if this particular screen is on the XBox harddrive or on the game disk.

I haven't tried it on Rallisport 2 yet. The error screen I always get during Shenmue II consists of a solid color background with some simple text stating that there has been a disc read error, and that I should press A to continue.

Yeah that is the most common error... maybe you need to try to clean your cache... my drive has been on the fritz for a while now...

newer error is result of an updated dashboard?

haven't had an error like that since the system launch...first thing the xbox did when I popped in HALO, too :b quickly got a new one and haven't seen one of these errors since

Disc Read errors are specific to the game, always have been. Some just use the same disc read error screen. But it's something in the software that displays the message NOT the hardware.

That error causes Xbox reps to pee in their pants... I remember when I was working retail during college and I used to show the Xbox reps our damaged boxes... they would almost cry when ones came up with that error...

Even DVDs?

Well there _is_ a hardware error because there is one that comes on when you first power on the Xbox. It's the green/black screen and you know it's being pulled from the system hard drive because it'll come on even when you put a DVD in there.

Most error screens come from the system itself... not the software.... DVDs give the same error as games

A lot of them do indeed, but I don't think that RSC2 error is coming from the HD...unless they've modified the background.

Isnt RSC2 a DVD 9 game ? Might be same probelm as Champions of Norrath do to older PS2s.

I dunno, in the beginning, ALL XBOX games shipped on DVD9 discs...

Most of my XBOX titles come on DVD9s, actually. Only the more recent games use the older standard. For example, my Halo disc is a DVD9...but some of the GotY version discs are not.

If you have a modded xbox, go to ms dashboard, check the time and date setting. if the year ist 8000something, turn it back to 2004 and all will be fine. Old known problem with modded xboxes.

I had to get a newer system a few months ago, and get the same problem with Rallisport 2, and ONLY with Rallisport 2; I don't have a Thompson drive in my system, either. I'm pretty much just giving up on the game and will be selling it off tomorrow. :\

EDIT: I have a modded Xbox. Thanks for the info. Maybe I will keep it for now. :)

just mod your xbox with a 120gig drive and then copy the game to it and put the disk away in it's case to keep it safe - problem solved :)

no longer do i have to rely on my shitty tompson drive!

That's what I did, and I still got the same error. :) I actually haven't tried playing the game off the disc yet; didn't really care about XBL play.

sounds like a bug to me then. Perhaps they decided to use the "dirty disc" error as a catch all for when the game fucks up?

Yep, that's what I was thinking...

I get those error all the time when playing ESPN games. Sometimes I would take 10 minutes before my Xbox could read the disk again. I also got that error playing PSO(which made me lose all my items). When I was playing ESPN Basketball yesterday, I could hear my drive stop and start the whole game. MS fixes this for free right??

How much did the whole thing cost?

Recently I've been getting this problem a lot.

Got it with Spider-Man, Thief 3, and BG:DA2. I think my Xbox is breaking on me. :(

had a spare 120gig HD lying around from my old pre-raid (don't ask - stupid bloody data loss) pc and the chip was £40 including a CD to set it all up. Sorted :)

How do I do this?

load 3 different games so if rsc 2 is giving you probs

load

game 1
game 2
game 3

and then put in rsc2 again (xbox uses virtual memory cache for the last 3 played recent titles, your cache maybe fubar and needs wiping)

Thank you very much. That seems to have cleaned up my problem.......for now.

did it for me too! When I finally got it booted up!

Same problem here with the PAL version of RSC2. I first completed amateur ok and moved on to the next difficulty. Halfway though the season, after second in a series of four races, game locks almost instantly when it should start to save. Fucking fuck.

I just bought the game yesterday, and had no problems with it at all when I played it for 4 hours straight last night. However, today I try to play the game on Xbox Live, and it freezes on me. The error only occurs in certain modes of the game. I would exchange it for another copy, however, there's a couple of obstacles that prevent this from happening. For starters, I purchased the game from a small "mom and pop" shop that will probably tell me to send it back to EA, since they're short on copies. Also, even if I were to get a fresh copy, I highly doubt that this would correct the problem, since the disc is brand new, and these errors are more than likely a hardware flaw connected more to my POS Thomsom drive, rather than the disc itself. FWIW, this isn't a frequent problem with all games, just a chosen few.

Anyone else experience this problem yet?

Hey, I know posters get yelled at for posting new topics when there are older ones on the same issue, but you don't need to do that if the old topic was from last JULY :)

Check your dashboard clock on your Xbox. My RSC2 gave me DDE all the time, then I saw the internal clock/date was all messed up, I re-set it and it worked perfectly. The clock/date seems to go whack if I leave my Xbox unused for a while.

But RSC2 always works perfectly when I fix it. Have an old launch thompson too.
