Xbox discs more fragile than PS2's?

So I'm playing NFS:MW on Xbox the other night and I decide to give the original Underground a spin for old time's sake. That's when I get the CANNOT READ: DISC MAY BE DIRTY OR DAMAGED message.

Unphased, and thinking it's just a random Xbox error, I reboot. And get the message again.

BUT MY DISC IS PRISTINE. Well, OK, there are two very small, hairline marks on the surface that I would not even classify as scratches. That's all I could see, as the rest of the perfect, virgin surface glowed back at me with the light of a thousand beautiful suns.

Try as I might, I could not get that game to load. Fifty bucks, down the shitter.

Ridiculous.

I take incredible care of my game software, and I have never had a problem like this before. My question is, is Xbox media somehow more fragile than PS2s? I KNOW I have PS2 and PSOne games with more noticeable wear than my Underground disc, and I have never, ever had a problem. (In fact, my PS2 loaded up and ran my latest OPM disc, which got caught in the plastic envelope seal and has GLUE all over the freakin' edge.)

I went and rebought the game for PS2, and I'll purchase all multiplatform games for PS2 if it turns out Xbox discs are teh suck.

When an XBOX says...
CANNOT READ: DISC MAY BE DIRTY OR DAMAGED
...that usually means there is a problem with the XBOX, not the disc (despite what the message is attempting to imply).

I think you're right on the money with this one. I would even recommend re-purchasing all the multi-platform games you own - just make sure they're the PS2 versions this time around. By the way, did you hear that the Burnout series has better looking sparks in the PS2 versions compared to the Xbox versions? Crazy, I know.

Hmm. Disappointing. This is my second Xbox, and it's only two years old. It's not even all that worn, as I split my playtime between it and like five other platforms.

So far, it's the only game that's given me problems, so I'm going to cross my fingers and just hope it's the disc.

Thompson drive?

Sheesh, I hope it's not the drive. My first Xbox had to go back because the drive wouldn't load a certain level in Munch's Oddyssee. Failed on multiple copies of the game.

I would be none to pleased if, in addition to cutting this gen short, MS cut my Xbox gaming short with TWO bum drives.

I had a Thompson and it got progressively worse. Some games, like Halo 2, would load fine no matter what. Other stuff, like this year's Madden or the most recent Splinter Cell, would require me to boot the system anywhere from 3-10 times before it would finally read. I swapped a Samsung drive into it a couple months ago and it's like having a brand a new machine.
