xbox live lag

op_ivy

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
3 days ago, my connection on live took a huge dump. its extremely rare that i can play a match in halo 2 that isnt choke full of garbled/stuttering voices and assorted lag, and i'm even getting disconnects in other live games too (pgr2).

my xbox is connected to the internet directly to the cable modem when i play on live.

i ran some upload and download tests from several places online. my download is roughly 2150kbps, upload is 301. that seems quite decent enough and certainly not worse then what it usually is. the internet runs a-ok too, no noticable speed loss.

i called my isp, they said everything is fine on their end for my area, they pinged the modem and said it was working perfectly well.

i called 800-4-my-xbox, got some lady on the phone who was no help at all. she must have been reading from some sort of generic troubleshooting FAQ. "xbox live preformance can very from game to game due to a hosts speed and bandwidth... yadda yadda yadda"

so, i switched out the cable from the xbox to the modem, and it still hasnt improved anything.

anyone have any thoughts on what the issue could be? maybe the ethernet port on my fairly new xbox (purchased at the beginning of november)? finally, isnt there a way to test upload and download speeds from one of the menus on the xbox? i looked, but couldnt find it...

any thanks would really be appreciated :(

Go into the Xbox live part of the dashboard and get to the part where it actually tries to connect (soory, don't recall off the top of my head exactly where to go). You should see a series of spinning asterisks. When they finish connecting press Y on the controller. There you will see your upload and download speeds as well as your latency.

ok, it comes up with a screen saying

1.00.5971.01

W 0000-000B
X 0000-F001
Y 00A8-4860
Z 000-0000
L.: 81ms (82ms) P: 20/21

Press A to continue

-------

MT: 1 (0015-00F0)
IC: 1 (0015-00F0)
NT: 1

so, i assume "L" is latency (of 81 milliseconds...). whats the rest of that?

i called the 800 number again and got a guy who ran me through this same test. he said the issues i'm having may be because the firewall inside the modem is set to a high security setting, and that i need to lower that, and also make sure certain ports are open. how do i go about screwing with that shit, and is that even something that may have changed recently on its own?

if youre renting your modem, you might try calling your ISP and see how much of a hassle it would be to swap it for another one to make sure its not the modem itself. I dont think your modem would have updated any firewall settings unless you or your ISP initiated it. I had a problem similar to this recently but it cleared up on its own. I think Cox was updating something and it had an affect on the service. to me it was almost like there was some problem with the DNS servers because I was only having problems with certain sites and services.

i called tech support for adelphia again, no help what-so-ever. he said they "dont deal with ports, its all dynamic IPs. no firewall or security settings on the modem". so... i'm fucked, but it looks like i may save money each month by getting rid of broadband for a while

seriously, i hope it clears itself up soon :(

i think with their service, the modem is mine, i honestly dont know :P. i got the modem from them, with the service...

could it be the modem though? everything works fine when i connect my pc to the net

EDIT: tomorrow i'll call em up to see if they'll swap the modem for a new one

What about just getting rid of cable and going DSL?

from my experience, cable is better... but aside from that, i'm not even sure that would fix my problem with live. wish i had another xbox to test it here

Have you tried changing the ethernet cable between the modem and your xbox? Your problem sounds like packet loss issues, not ping. Best way to test that it's not about your other tools but your xbox is to connect a pc using the cable you normally use for your xbox and ping google for a few minutes, and see if you have loss.

i did try swapping out the cable for another.... no change

:lol i still hear that shit from Prine. and i thought you were on my friends list already? i'll add you if you arent and if you win, i can blame lag :P

just a heads up if anyone cares... i played for 5-6 hours today in halo 2 virtually lag free. the storm is over (?)

The new XBL stat page is pretty worthless... it used to actually give you upload and download speeds and they were labeled as such. I have no idea what all that stuff means now except latency. 80ms is OK. If you see it jumping above 100, then you'll probably notice a little lag. I haven't checked mine out since I switched to cable, but my DSL latency was always pretty high... more hops and switches to go through than cable.

Oh well, at least you're back on-line.
