Xbox Live must change for MMO's

What is hard to pull off? Xbox live does not prevent them to have CSRs over the phone or the net and if they need to charge and extra fee they can.
Also, about the content, live IS made to receive download content.

What the fuck is this all about? It's just publishers that are still trying to be free like on the PC side instead of taking part on a close community system like Live? fuck them.

Yea...I hate that...you know when they want to make things free....what a bunch of jerks

PSO for Live had their own servers and fees, Battlefield has their own servers, I don't see any major change needed. The existing system supports this. This is a non-story about a non-issue.

Yeah, fuck developers for developing for other platforms... Duh...

What the fuck are you talking about?

Yes, fuck Blizzard for selling 5.5M copies of WoW and making $1 BILLION on one game.

Hey we might fuck PC gaming while we're at it, right?

Wow you guys don't get it. They can make the same money and stay in touch with their customers with Microsoft's Live service just like on PC.

It's just that they don't want to comply to Xbox live develloping rules. But those close community are most enjoyable for the customer and Live does not prevent anything for MMOs right now. It's just baby crying from their lazy ass.

This is no surprise.

If anything, I would be very surprised if they did not charge $10+ a month.

And the article has nothing to do with charging the customers.

It'd be good if he gave concrete examples of what he's referring to. I don't see developers being unable to do anything on Xbox Live, outside of multiplatform mmorpg games that share servers (and that is probably possible: I think FFXI actually does this.)

Yeah I really want the status of Live to be dependant on developers who dont depend on its success. Yeah thats a good idea. Cause Microsoft isnt doing a good job with that.

Fuck no, Microsoft DEPENDS on LIVE and will for that reason continue to pander to us. The minute its in the 'fire and forget' hands of developers we're toast.

Keep yer fucking Guild Bores and WoW, I HAVE a PC. You know who fucking supports it beyond that god damned MMORPG bill I get every month? ME and ME ALONE. Fuck.

LMAO At the last sentence!!

But I agree, for the console space I don't see a problem with XBL. I don't even see why Blizzard even cares (unless they want to develop for M$ but have some hurdles they can't work out). They have Battlenet and it seems to working out great for them and gamers so why should they care? I need more detials before I'll say anything further on the matter.

I love Batttlenet, I love XBL, they two entirely different online models so I don't understadn where Blizzard's commentary is coming from?

Microsoft is willing to change many of their services for big developers, especially MMO games. In the February issue of Computer Gaming World Chris Satchell, general manager of Microsoft's Game Developer Group admits to Microsoft taking mouse support into consideration for the 360 for example. Another change was when Microsoft allowed the use of the keyboard as a gameplay oriented device for Final Fantasy XI in light of their commentary that they would only keyboard use for chatting earlier in 05. Although these examples are paltry by themselves it at least shows a willingness by Microsoft to adapt their stance on many issues in order to get these games working on their proprietary platform.

Now for services and support they would absolutely be forced to change Live to better accommodate the MMO genre. Jeff Strain's commentary is precisely correct and based on those comments I assume Microsoft has already begun to approach developers or is about to start although I admit that I'm possibly being too optimistic here. Hopefully more developers will be attracted to the next-gen console platform in light of successes from games such as Huxley, Final Fantasy XI, and Sony's unannounced MMO project.

The guy used to work for blizzard, he isnt blizzard. Arena.net sucked anyway.

Tekuno:

I think the developers of MMORPGs and yourself overestimate the kind of support we get from them. The billing can be done with Live as it is, and I refuse to believe any empty promises like I have so many times before about on-going dynamic mmorpg support so they can change the core business model of live and hijack it from MS.

Fuck developers, fuck their wishy washy ways and their bandwagon omg more money this way mentality. Only Capcom should get to run Live.

It's true, I admit that I'm being overly optimistic about any possible changes MS might wish to make but I'm hoping that due to market preassure and consumer demand they'll be at least able to meet them half way. In any case Final Fantasy XI is up and running without any trouble and set for release and Webzen seems to be quite happy releasing their MMO on the market. Jeff Strain is probably overreacting with his demands but what do I know.

Live, as it is, is good. My problem is developers like to throw this talk around, and its all very promising talk. MS is lured by MONEY and SUBSCRIBERS but the more they bend to developers who may or may not deliver, the less chance MS has of saving Live should developers fail to create something special.

Arena.net sucked. I dont care what he says. I never used it and when I was forced to I didnt like it. Blizzard has WoW running on fucking Mac, MS shouldnt worry about getting 360 support if they DECIDE they wanna put WoW on a console at all. Guild Wars is free, who cares what that guys says. Xbox has a harddrive, can download their updates, I cant imagine what other control they would need over Live.

I mean the keyboard mouse is no brainer, thats not bending to the will of developers, its common sense. Honestly I dont WANT many of the PC developers to be lured to Xbox 360 cause the BULK of them these days are pretty assy and fail to produce any viable content for the PC ASIDE from MMORPGs which only one or two are bonafide success stories while the rest succeed simply because the MMORPG business model is pure rape on the consumer end.

I don't get it. One of the changes MS made to Live is exactly what this guy asks for: you can put up your own servers and let people use your own online service instead of Xbox Live. I think it's called servers federation. It's what let Square Enix putting their PlayOnline service on Xbox 360, so I don't see why other publishers can't do the same.

I understand the concern and agree with it, I wouldn't want a small developer or even a massive one dictating what we get or don't get with our Live service either. Fortunately however Microsoft only seems willing to listen to developers of hugely lucrative properties such as Square and possibly Blizzard. I'm quite confident with the skills and decisions of the Live team and so far they've made me more than happy. Unfortunately Microsoft bended over backwards for Square and now if you wish to play Final Fantasy XI you’ll have to put up with their overly convoluted and backwards service**. A decision they were forced to make if they wanted the game on the 360.

* I understand that it was necessary on the PS2 due to there being no online infrastructure in place but on the 360 its just a poor idea needlessly complicating the process in order to play a grind-a-thon.

Sorry for my misstake above, bad morning.....

But I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I can see M$ making some concessions, but XBL works and works well. You got to put some constraints in place, or else the service won't be any different than other existing models.

I still wonder what was the true story behing the cancellation/infinite delay of True Fantasy Live Online....but I'm digressing.

M$ should remain firm in their stance, but try their best to work with developers. I'll be the first to say I don't want then to bend over backwards to comprimise the level and quality or service for a few developers. If I want the game that bad, I'd just get it on an alternate platform.
