September 12, 2005 - And you thought all that time playing Halo 2 instead of watching Boston Public was a waste. Microsoft's Xbox Live game service is being given an Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Technology and Advanced New Media.

At the 57th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards on September 29, the Academy will honor Microsoft's online gaming service for Outstanding Achievement in Multiplayer-Backend Console Game Technology. The awards recognize "ground-breaking work in television broadcast and production systems, interactive television and other new media technologies."

More than two million gamers currently subscribe to Xbox Live. The service will bridge generations with the Xbox 360 this fall, which launches with expanded Live service designed for the next-gen console.

haha well deserved. One of the best things to happen this gen, an achivement that really made the last 2 years incredible for Xbox and gaming all round.

I just wonder how much... :lol

Considering that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is giving this award to a service that's taking people away from watching TV, I'd say a lot.

Absolutely.

I love online gaming on the PC and Xbox; but I prefer the big screen experience and an online party of friends over Live. I suspect that Live will be off the hinge when GRAW and PGR3 hit. :)

So I wonder WHO exactly gets the Emmy?

All joke-posts aside, when a complex and multi-year technology like XBL wins an Emmy, who ends up with the statue on their mantle? Or do all XBL tech team members get one?

Yet another crazy Emmy win: Scrubs won for Best Multi-Camera Editing for an episode where their lives became a sitcom for part of the episode.

Scrubs is a single-camera show.

This one is even more ludicrous, though.

My question is, what won the previous years ever since Microsoft created the service? I mean, did they just make up a category just to give an emmy to Microsoft?

Who gives a fuck if they made it up, they make up awards all the time to recognize achivemtnts they cant put into an excisting catagory. Well done MS.

Well someone should've told NBC that Scrubs is a single-camera show when they submitted it to be nominated for the award.

The way the Emmys/Oscars work is the show/movie must first be eligible and then the studio must submit it for consideration. For example, the reason why The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions didn't get nominated for effects Oscars was because Warner only submitted a reel for Revolutions for consideration, and it ended up that neither movie got nominated at all.

...it seems like this category was created for the sole purpose or giving it to Live.
I was intending to post a picture of Homer Simpson with his award for 'Outstanding Achievement In The Field Of Excellence', but when typing that into Google Images I saw this and thought I'd post it instead:

Good question.

So there's nothing at all odd to you about the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences deciding, apropos of nothing (or so we're to believe), to give an award to a service that's taking viewers away from TV? And not just any award, but one that they actually had to create a special category for? The only reason anyone could think there's anything even slightly fishy about this is because they're not Live subscribers themselves? Come on, man. This 'award' has all the credibility of a mail-order diploma. :p

the thread title made me think they were giving ms an emmy for that awful mtv special. which would've been much worse. xbl isn't television and i'm not sure why it costs $50 a year, but at least it's pretty awesome.

This is retarded. Where's TiVo's Emmy then? MS is not only buying developers and publishers. It's buying the whole media sector.

thats a damn good point. Tivo was more revolutionary than xbox live.. as much as i like live.. this award is ridiculous.

You're not getting it. This is a television award. Since when is XBL 'television'?

Well, if Bill said Xbox was a microwave , everybody would agree, would get on their knees and... *slurp*... :lol

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences =/= just broadcast TV shows

They're not an electronic entertainment group, though. This really is outside their purview. The fact that they had to create a category for Live in order to give out an award seems pretty telling.

National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences

Founded in 1957, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. It recognizes excellence in television with the coveted Emmy Award for News & Documentary, Sports, Daytime, Public Service and Technology.

Classifying XBL as 'television technology' would be a real stretch, at least IMO.

Now that would have been funny :lol :lol

I think xbox live service deserves an emmy.

I also think that xbox live users, by and large, deserve to have their feet eaten.

First of all, this isn't a completely new category as it's been around now for a couple of years now. Secondly, they do have a section for non-traditional platforms and programs so something like this isn't out of the relm of possibility. Sure Xbox Live in it's current state on Xbox is pretty insular but its implementation on the 360 looks to vastly improved and much more all encompassing, even while you're just watching tv. Award worthy? Sure, why not. Lastly, I don't see Xbox Live on the list of official nominees so this may not even be correct. No need to burn your bras just yet.
