Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Who are these people still playing NES games on their original NES?

The real point of suck here is that I will not be able to sell games on ebay any longer.

The big question that won't be answered for a long time is if MS can pull off Steam like sales.

I think that would go a long way towards redeeming these policies.

For me at least.

I bought a Sega Master System a couple months ago.

There are positives, but they are all attached with negatives. I like no disc swapping, but it means shitty DRM. I like the idea of Kinect 2.0, but people don't like the privacy issues. I like having a sandboxed OS that allows for true multitasking, but that reduces the usable RAM for games. etc, etc...

They have had the no disc swap option for 8 years it is games on demand. Guess what no one wanted it because the pricing sucks. Now they are trying to force games on demand shit on everyone with the same horrible prices.

To pull this off and for Sony not to have something similar(we don't know yet) MS BETTER HAVE secured some pretty big exclusive titles.

15 years later, "LTTP: Xbox One"

OP: Hey guys, I totally want to dig into the Xbox One library, where should I get started?

Reply: Umm sorry dude.. MS shut down the Xbox One access servers a couple years ago. Xbox Ones are as good as paperweights. MS wants you to buy the Xbox Two instead.

People have pointed out before that if anything happened to steam, as it went bust not likely that they could just get rid of the drm in that case. strangely people will accept that steam would sort if out but not ms. This isn't an ideological thing as people have admitted the don't mind steam doing it as the price is right go figure

Do you know what MS did to the original Xbox games?

Honestly I think this sounds pretty cool, under this model I'll probably end up actually playing MORE of my friends and families games than I do today.

I'll be buying all my games digitally anyways so the used game thing means nothing to me, nothing Microsoft can say will make Gaf happy so that's pretty much a foregone conclusion........based on my usage patterns this setup sounds VERY reasonable with a lot of advantages.

Online functionality eventually ended, big deal. Online functionality is done for basically all Dreamcast, PS2, and soon enough, Wii games. But you can still play original Xbox games single player (or LAN if the game supports it)

I think it's ovbious why they gave out information today. They hope by doing so, everything will be forgotten on Monday. And they won't have to mention any of the problems at E3/conference as people got the information now.

I love how the family members can play the games without the discs. This is a great feature for me.

That post history

It's clear the MS is trying to drag console gamers kicking and screaming into an all digital future which I happen to think is inevitable. But right now they're trying to maintain some middle ground and failing spectacularly. They should either give up on this nonsense and have things remain as they are right now on the 360 or go all digital, half-measures never please anyone.

At this point, is there anything positive about this product?

Much weaker hardware, focus on TV, shit DRM implementation, same prices.... Kinect 2 mandatory...

When do the good news start coming?

It has a lot of good features like play on partial download, cloud storage, background updates, instant on with voice or controller. The controller has a low power state so it never truly disconnects, it can use standard micro USB, the feedback triggers etc. It's just overwhelmed with the shitty ones. It's like they started with good decisions and then they let the executives trim the BOM for long term cheapness and publishers basically wrote their game policy.

First it was just the hardcore gamers that were outraged, now the anger has reached mainstream media (Time, Forbes, etc) and I think that even the biggest MS fanboy has to to at least be worried that the system they plan on buying day 1 is dead in the water from day 1. Shell out $600 -$800 for a sytem that might go the way of the Sega Saturn or the Dreamcast? I really don't think so. Lending a game to a friend of mine, who happens to only be an XBL friend for 25 days not possible? Why? Who are you to tell me who I can sell, borrow or give my game to?
And how are you gonna check family/friends? What if I am adopted and don't look like my family? Will the system stop me from playing? Perhaps a ridiculous example, but this whole situation is rather ridiculous.

Of course. This is ALWAYS how corporations try to drop bad news. Stories get buried through the weekend and new headlines emerge on Monday.

I can foresee a legal shitstorm in the EU over this.

And these are just the details we know about. I wonder what they don't want to tell us just yet and what will only be discovered in the fine print at launch?

It's draining a lot of the fun out of pre-E3 for me. Worried about Sony's intentions too.

Be silly to think that a mega corp like M$ didn't consider the EU market as well as the laws pertaining to the selling/trading of goods. I am sure they have some type of plan in place to circumvent those laws to implement the same strategy they are using in North America.

This is insane. My Xbox live account got hacked last year, and to get my money back the idiots as MS customer service reset my account. I lost all of my friends, achievements, DLC etc... Had this happened with the xbone i would have lost every single game i have ever purchased for the console. MS better seriously fix their flawed account systems before they implement this or there will be serious customer service issues.

Sony has pretty much confirmed publisher will decide DRM policy?

Yes, and thuway just basically posted the same thing in the E3 Sony thread. He doesn't even know if they'll exempt first-party games, which means I'm completely out of next gen.

Sony has said that they won't be requiring it, it's up to publishers themselves. People are saying that there is no drm because Sony is not having a having to log in to psn.

This is kind of a deal breaker to me. As someone who has PC/360/PS3 and enjoyed everyone one of them (I still miss a Nintendo console though :() I don't think I'll get this console. I almost never used internet for my PS360 exept for game updates as I don't dig competitive multiplayer and I only play local coop. I'll wait for the conference to see the games but I don't think things are going to change a lot. Sure I'd be kinda pissed if Dead Rising 3 ended up to be a One exclusive but I can get over it.

Infinite power of the cloud will be a real game breaker

in some alternative dimension probably

I guess I can't sell used Xbox games on Ebay anymore.

Sounds like I will be getting most of my games on Wii U and PS4 (Maybe if their policies are different).

The only Xbox games I will get will be the exclusives (the few that are worth a damn)

Who are those people that are saying that this is not as bad as they thought it was going to be?!

You can't rent/lend games. You have to be connected to the internet. The only option that you have is to give a game to a friend, but I doubt many people would do this. If you ever decide that you want to play that game again you would have to buy it again.

Possible trade in option might be a good news for some (Personally I believe that trading in is a scam). But keep in mind that Gamestop will have more rights now. That disc that you will be trading in will be unusable anywhere else, so they potentially could just give you $5 for that game and feel like you should be thanking them...

Makes two of us. Never, EVER thought I would've said that. I hate PC gaming, but I suppose I'll have to do that....... Not looking forward to drivers/graphics card/firmware or whatever the problem will be smh.
