Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Not long until Monday...

On GAF, I'm a firm believer that being a junior member renders a user's opinion no less worthy of attention than a member that has been here for years.

That said...the influx of hopefully-just-another-fucking-shill-cos-its-just-sad-otherwise members are really starting to piss me off.

I hope your not getting paid for this because you are really bad at it.

Microsoft's astroturfing shills aren't even trying to hide it anymore. I think Microsoft is legitimately worried that GAF and other enclaves of enthusiast gamers may succesfully scare the dudebros away from their anti consumer drm box.

Do enthusiast/hardcore gamer opinions actually carry weight with Dudebros? Or is it just the typical nerd/jock social gap that can never be crossed?

For the foreseeable future, every single thread on NeoGAF about Xbox One games and announcements will be derailed by discussion of these terrible policies.

You post that link. But what are your actual feelings on the subject?

My feelings are this:

If you have bought and enjoyed a game in this generation then somewhere along the line you agreed to a EULA that says pretty much exactly what MS have said this week. Also DVD, Bluray, music... none of this is new. MS have now passed the buck to publishers, just like Sony.

I play a lot of games on PC through Steam. I can't trade Steam games (through Steam), nor can I rent them. If I have a disk with a Steam Works title on it I can't install it without an internet connection. I own over 200 games on Steam, some of which will work offline. Some don't. Some do for 30 days. I can "gift" a game to a friend, but not if I have played it already. To me that's actually worse than what MS are proposing.

When Steam started I remember the shit storm that went with that. Seemingly no one else here does. The discussions were the same. And the end result is the same. If you don't like it then don't buy it.

When I said money is here take it, I really mean it. I have money to burn on the Xbox One and can't wait for launch. I will also be buying a PS4. Stoked for that too.

Well I have a about half a dozen friends that would qualify as traditional dudebro gamers who love the 360 and Xbox Live. However, after telling them about Microsoft's DRM setup they have decided they are either going PC or PS4. So the enthusiasts can have an effect on the dudebros.

As an aside, if anyone can give me an "in" to being paid for posting opinions on GAF then do let me know. WiiU, Xbone, PS4, Republicans... all offers considered...

Then we're all criminals because that type of EULA on console games was never enforced. To the point where Gamestop created a successful business out of it.

I call you a gamer.
People hated me already on the forum for that.

Fuck that drm and priciple talk. We want games. Fuck em all. They have been a part of install key eras, of steam era, of dlc era and made it through. they have been to blind to realize where it leads to, but now in"xbone" era we re the asses because we support it.

I remember the day when steam launched. Everyone cried "its the end" and pc gaming is dead. Everything is going to fall apart. My only thought was: this can maybe save the pc against those bullshit consoles.
Switched to consoles sooner and later and it always amazed me how people were talking about that amazing steam.

Now i hear that 24h connect bullshit... Whats the problem. If you re living in a place of the world, which isnt able to gathwr a stable internet coonection for 24 hours in the next few years, so you re not part of the xbox one world. Cry or buy yourself a offline console or an offline pc.

I dont give a shit.

At last:

http://www.t3.com/news/microsoft-hasnt-stolen-your-games-from-you-and-heres-why

When the games start raining down on Monday more people will come off the GAFF-o-Tron ventilator and have a seizure.

Money is here Microsoft. Take it.

The problem is that he isn't technically wrong. Licensing software and not actually owning it should have been one of the biggest consumer rights fights of the last decade and its basically been completely ignored. Its a way to get around the right of first sale and all sorts of other legal issues raised by actually buying a product.

We aren't all criminals at all. Only people who have broken the EULA are. On any (every) system.

Well that makes 2 of you. Go not give a shit quietly, thanks.

That article. My god. Bush did spin better.

The EULAs were unenforceable in majority of countries and ignored.

Also the 24 hour check in is stupid.

Please quit comparing to Steam. Steam is optional software, XBONE is hardware and limits competition. Where Steam helps competition and has several pro consumer practices.

EULA are not the law. You can rent games legally, you can sell them legally and you can lend them legally. You aren't doing nothing illegal. EULA mean shit compared to the law. At least were I live.

Watching Forward until Dawn right now on netflix before i start up Halo 4's campaign for the first time....a game i rented from gamefly since i don't have XBL Gold.

Feels good, and temporary.

I've played enough games over the years and have a large enough collection that retiring from gaming is a real possibility. 24 hour mandatory checks turns gaming into a service. I have one too many of those already. This one isn't compelling at all.

But hey if you are willing to jump through hoops to play a game. Good luck to you.

(Jumps out)

yeah I'm not sure if I am reading the same article everyone else is; I think people are taking it at face-value when I get the impression it is mean to be sardonic.

Not the wisest move? How? Have I now put myself at the top of the GAF SDF hitlist?!

Oh no!

<lifts skirt>run away!!!</lifts skirt>

Yeah cause acting this way will end well. If you are trying to joke you might want to stop cause your not funny.

It is sad when a JR here is the only one sounding reasonable. Thank you sir for not being part of the echo chamber that is NEOGAF. I love the XBOX and the PS I will buy both, and I will smile doing it!
