Xbox One S Thread: The S is for Sexy

No response earlier. Does anyone know if there is a way to power on the new controller in Bluetooth mode? For instance, say you want to use the controller on a PC, if you press the power button, it's going to turn on the Xbox One.

Is there a way to hold down a certain button and turn it on in Bluetooth mode? I'd imagine I'd just have to buy a 2nd controller but just checking.

No, the controllers can only store one profile at a time, Xbox console or PC. What I do is keep a USB cable plugged into my PC and if the controller was last synced with the Xbox, I plug it in and unplug it really quick, which is enough to sync to the PC.

Asking again for a new page, does anyone know when the Anniversary Update goes live for Windows 10 tomorrow? 9 AM PST?

Well the Netflix app supports HDR it seems. Looks like even with my old HU9000 + evo kit that the HDR just makes everything way too dark. Maybe wasted my cash on that kit.
.. sure people with newer tvs wont have any problems. Also the interface seems snappier for some reason!?!??!

Hrmmm I can resolve the darkness by increasing the gamma +3 but that doesn't sound like the right thing to do...

Arrrgggghh, these next 22 days are gonna pass so slowly...
Gonna go rewatch the Xbox E3 conference to see the juicy S unveil again.

Just received a call from my local Gamestop and they are staying open past 9pm to sell the Xbox One S. When I asked them a few days ago they said they would not be doing this.

I'm still annoyed that they didn't include support for Bluetooth headphones since they're positioning it as a media machine and the controllers have BT.

Got to hold one today in the box. And even the box is so fucking slim compared to the Xbox one boxes. Almost like a bigger laptop box.

Ok so need some advice
I don't use my Xbox one much and at moment sits in the bedroom as bluray player but I have a 4K tv in living room BUT it's not HDR
If I was to trade my old one for the new slim would I be losing out on much by not having HDR,what I'm saying is would I notice difference from normal bluray to 4K films but without HDR

Also moving Xbox in living room would make me play it more, would I lose out on anything gaming wise by not having HDR
And last question does ea access require gold as I would problely grab that too

Thanks in advance

Huh? The Bluetooth addition is just for PC compatibility, not for anything with the Xbox One S itself.

You can still use the benefits of 4K, HDR is good to have for movies but it's not really a must. Yea, big improvement, but you can just upgrade to a TV in a few years when the technology is fleshed out.
As for games, there's only 3 games that even support HDR, so no you won't really miss out. They still gotta make those games' colours look beautiful for the 99% that won't use HDR, it's not like they will look washed out or anything.

Even without your 4k set having HDR UHD movies still look a lot better than standard Blu ray especially more.recent movies that were originally filmed in 4k.

As far as HDR gaming no one knows the impact because there are no HDR games as of yet.

I really wish the new controllers would have start and back. Menu and options or whatever these are never stuck.

In all fairness "Menu" with the 3 lines is used pretty much everywhere on the internet now. Which I believe is why Microsoft went that way.

I don't really understand how people think this is such a sexy design. I think the original One looks better. Maybe if it was black or royal blue or something it would look better? Doesn't do anything for me.

It's amazing that some people may have different tastes and opinions about things.

This is wrong.

1. "Old" HDR is not may not mean HDR10 or Dolby Vision (Edit2: Due to Vizio not using HDR10, just Dolby Vision)
2. XBO S only supports HDR10
3. TV has to support HDR10. Some TVs only support Dolby Vision. (Edit2: Some Vizios)

I don't know if this has been corrected yet, but the Vizio P and M Series 2016 displays has both Dolby Vision and HDR10. Firmware released last week enabled, it which was promised on launch day, by the CTO of Vizio.

I talked to the TV guy in Best Buy and he said as far as he'd been told any TV with Dolby Vision should also have HDR10 as HDR10 is basic generic HDR and there is nothing forcing The TV to not support both, and most high end models will absolutely support both. I don't know if it's true but it's worth mentioning.

As I mentioned earlier, my Gamestop called me around 7:20pm or so on the 8/1 letting me know they were going to start selling the Xbox One S at 9pm PST. When I arrived, there was a line of about 10 other people waiting for the 9pm time frame. I am not sure how many pre-orders my local store here had, but to see that many people at night for a refresh system was interesting to say the least. When I was waiting for my system to be processed the guy that called me said that the still had a lot of units that were pre-ordered and that everyone could of make it since it was a last minute decision for them to stay open.

I am currently updating my system, first little nit-pick is that I wish when the message that says "it's time to update" showed the Xbox One S. I know it is silly, but little things like that is something they should have modified. Right now I am at 80% staring at a image of my old Xbox One on the screen. lol.

Oh and it looks a lot smaller IRL than in pictures. It looks a little odd in my all black entertainment unit, but it looks charming all it's own. It sits next to my light bluish PS4 Uncharted 4 system, so it is not totally out of place with all black surrounding it. I don't know if I will have time to test the quality of the UHD playback. I still have my Samsung UHD hooked up, so I plan to run some tests on both to see how the Xbox One S compares in UHD playback.

System is dead silent right now, can't hear anything at all out of it. I know the fan is running cause I can feel air at the top, but it is silent. Will see if it raises volume while gaming, but my OG never did, so I doubt this will. Another note, the texture grip on the controller is nice. I have the Forza 6 Controller that came with the Forza 6 bundle and the grips on that one are a little more noticeable. The one on the S Controller are feel a little less aggressive than the F6 controller, which feels fine.

edit....

Oh...my UI when it started to apply the update just changed...now it is showing the Xbox One S as the image when it is applying the update. Yay!!! Again, it was a nit pic, but glad that they did change it once it got done downloading the update and started to apply it. It just finished applying the update and restarted and now a White Controller image appeared telling me to hit the big center "X" button, so that was also changed. But now it is saying it is time to update again. It was just a quick check and now I am going through setup. So after the initial update, it looks like all icons of the system are of the Xbox One S now.

What would you guys say is the top 5 best looking Ultra HD releases on the market today? Looking for a movie or two to buy to use to show people what 4K looks like (HDR10 or Dolby HDR is fine).

I would say Life of PI is fantastic looking. I don't own Reverent, but I hear that one looks great as well as Mad Max. But out of the 15 UHD movies I have, Life of Pi was the most amazing, extremely clean movie so far. The Martian was also very good.

Got mine! It's gorgeous!

And, uh, god bless the Store for making it easy to reinstall 1800 pieces of Rock Band DLC.

Is it possible to downsample 4k movies to 1080p with the new xbox?

Sure.

The television receives the resolution set at the Xbox One.

If you set it to 1080p (which is the maximum if you only have an 1080p TV connected), then everything will be scaled to 1080p.

be that 720p or 4K content from games / apps / UHD-BluRay movies.

I agree. The new one has that black bottom layer to make it appear thinner than it is, but I like the current one just fine - I have the white one which is just as nice as this one IMO.

I'd consider one if I had a 4K TV though

Oh wow that's actually surprising, I thought it would get noisy with the internal PSU, be sure to post if it changes when gaming, the current sexiness will instantly go away for me if it goes to PS4 noise level.

Cool that the UI images changes to Xbox One S.

Wow, I don't remember the Xbox forums being so toxic. I created a thread to talk about the broken 4K+30/36 bits with full-RGB output and got a question how dared I question Microsoft! and other nonsensical replies.

Edit:

For fun I took a quick peek into my device history, as I needed the serial numbers to request the Kinect adapter, and specifically my Xbox device history. Here's the result*:

*Excluding original 360 Kinect and a 360 arcade SKU that I seemingly forgot to register.
I would assume so, I mean, its just a play button

Unless UHD has an ultra-play button

Been playing with the controller on PC for a couple of days now. So weird quirks, vibration doesn't work if the first game I boot up is Forza 6 Apex, but if I boot up a steam game vibration works thereafter.

Have also had some disconnect and input lag issues after a while playing. Have had some times on rocket league where after 4 or 5 games I am delayed about 2 seconds, have to turn the controller off and then on again to fix it.

I have a normal FullHD TV (4K only next year around Scorpio release) and I'm wondering if I should upgrade.
Might wait for a DC breakdown.

The fact that they have this thing in red with blood splatter and not black is a travesty!

It is incredibly tacky to say the least. Im all for changing it to a silver/white though. I guess they want to to do what ever it is possible to stand out from the crowd considering everything is a black box nowadays. Especially the other two game consoles.
