Xbox One Screenshot Sharing is Live!

Sherlock Holmes

NVM I like the composition here

Even after playing every mission and the DLC, I'm still caught off guard by some of these shots. Game moves too fast for you to notice the little things.

Great point. Gameplay in SO is speedy and these shots really highlight the work that game artists do. Same goes for many other games too.

I can't be the only one here who thinks theses screenshots look better than what you see on you're tv?. Sunset never looked that sharp and clean through my playtime of the game.

Does sharing to one drive compress the shots at all?, my shots look noticeably worse from one drive.

I would imagine its a raw frame buffer capture, no way the screenshot can be better than what you see on the TV, except for the lack of any motion blurring you might get while the image on the screen is in motion.

Sherlock picture fixed. =) Rehosted to Minus

Compare by using the same screen. It depends what device you are using. You could also be looking at the image on a screen that is less than 1080p, all but making the image appear cleaner.

Holy wow. Great work!
(Until I saw it in the viewer, it was hard to get a sense of what was going on.)
It took a while to make but I'm considering doing another one. Halo is the perfect game for it because you can hide the HUD, gun, it's first person, and screenshots are .pngs.I am considering doing a Driveclub photo mode one but the PS4 has pretty rough screen caps, post processing takes forever to finish in photo mode, and I'd rather get actual gameplay to be honest.

This forum resizes screenshots to avoid horizontal scrolling. Almost every image is essentially getting downsampled.
But not when you click on them.

These screenshots are exactly what the xbox is outputting. There is no black magic going on. When they look better on one screen then on another it's your screen's fault.

With all the talk about resolution and other stuff people tend to forget how many different things they can change just with the build in systems of your tv. For instance any kind of post sharpening should be completly turned off.

My gaming tv is a plasma tv which comes with pretty good pre-calibrated settings but I spend about 3 hours with a colorimeter to make it even better and the differences do matter in terms of image quality.

So if you think these screens look better than the game on your setup, you should be able to make it look better on your setup as well. Consoles can only do so much, at the end of the chain is your tv.

As I said, I was only giving them a reason why they see it that way. I absolutely do not believe there is any post-process effect going on at a system level to improve image quality, especially considering how raw these shots often are in that respect.

I feel the Sleeping Dogs shots I put up in here actually look worse than they do on my TV, but I spent hours calibrating that sucker. Having my RGB set to limited might be the reason they look worse on here too though.

People posting "full RGB", is that a setting I need to adjust on my Xbox? I figured that it would be the default

You have to change it in the display settings, but leaving that setting enabled when using a normal TV will crush all the blacks significantly.

Said the same thing.

Now I'm supposedly brainwashed.

A framebuffer capture is literally what's sent to your screen. Most are viewing these at native res on their monitors, so I'm still not understanding how it could be possible that they look better than normal output. As someone who calibrated his screen, these look the same (or in some cases, a little worse because of unmatched color settings) than I normally see for these games.

Yup, I always have it set to full RGB because I play on a nice monitor. I also thought it was good etiquette to let people know what settings you used.

Sunset Overdrive, XB1 Share function, Full RGB, One Drive Test. Please let me know if you can see these.

As for the "looks better on screenshots" phenomenon going around... All I can say is that it's amusing seeing perceptions being shattered. Ironically, I can confirm that all of the pictures that I've taken so far have looked even better in motion.

I can see your pictures, Vlaud. Nice that OneDrive is supported. I can't wait to get the update. :)

A screenshot doesn't have the shimmering effect that you get when you're moving the camera around in a non-native res game or even native res with poor AA. 900p obviously looks fine as the screenshots show but there is interpolation happening with each frame which is more obvious in motion and make the picture feel "chunkier" than it really is.

The opposite is also true when you have games with heavy motion blur like Ryse or the Order which can looks quite blurry in screenshots but look great in motion.

what do you mean a "normal TV", what TV am I supposed to have for this? I have a pretty new TV and RGB has been around for awhile now I thought

I took two screenshots in PurePool. One with full RGB and the other one with limited. Can anyone tell me why the full RGB shot should be the better one?

Limited:

Edit: Okay. I was looking at them on my Surface Pro with low brightness and turned it up to max. I assume when people talk about the image being washed out, they mean the greyish-touch, correct?

It's washed out on the bottom one, not too noticably, but if you compare those screens to a press shot:

You can see that the game is intended to look as it does in the full image.

The point is, limited screenshots are messed up, so you cannot get black or white values.

Alien Isolation for example, has pitch black scenes. Scenes where you would hope would show the darkest black your screen can show (0), but take it with limited and it will show grey (16).

Similarly, if you have Intel HD Graphics on your computer, you can cause this affect by forcing video playback to be Full RGB (videos are almost always 16-235 colour space), and what happens is that the black borders will be grey just like these images.

Any TV will accept the limited signal and display it, some have trouble with the full or 0-255 settings.

My 2012 Panasonic plasma won't display it correctly for example

Thanks. Is there a good test-image to check if my TV supports Full RGB?

Should be some option on your telly. Let me know what the model number is.

If it doesn't, what will happen is that you will crush blacks (above what the Xbox already does).

Most mid-high end TVs these days have an option for it, but if you have multiple devices set up it may not be a good idea to do so just for taking better screenshots, which is my problem with this issue.

I doubt your TV will change this automatically, so you will have to find out.

I mean no disrespect.. is this a big thing (to be able to share screenshots on the web from the X1)? PS4 owner here, we've had something similar since launch? I don't "share" gaming pictures on the internet so I honestly don't know.

Apparently so, just as it will be a big thing when the PS4 finally gets "Friend online" notifications and Suspend/Resume.

Everybody likes something new.

Without it, most people took off-screen pictures (I know I did) unless they had a capture card. Screens are a good thing.

In comparison to PS4 though, this allows us to host images as a .png vs. .jpg. Bigger file, but lossless compression, so it looks pretty much as it does when you are running the game without added artefacts etc.

I imagine the PS4 will soon have support for less visual compression in the future.

Wow, kind of blows my mind it didn't have a SS capture prior to now. I just kind of assumed it did.. I like that its a .png file.

Why would it blow your mind? Are you sad about no DNLA support for your PS4 yet the Xbox One does? Does it blow your mind suspend/resume isn't on the PS4 yet but xbox one has had it? I mean, it feels like anything that is on the ps4 that isn't on the xbox one kind of blows your mind from your statement.

No need to start a console war. We're here to share screenshots of the glorious screen shot capture functionality ms has provided us.

I AM LOVING the shots of Sunset Overdrive. Those trees man... makes me want to play it again!

Here is the test. Look at this image on your Xbone through Internet Explorer or whatever.

Do you see 4 distinct columns or just a white box and a black box?

After setting my xbox to PC RGB I opened up this image and I only see one grey box on the right instead of two.
Haven't found any option on my TV for Full RGB :/

Look for a PC mode or on some TV's renaming the input PC triggers PC mode on that input.

My TV won't do full RGB over HDMI, only DVI

Sadly even if your screen does support Full RGB the IE on XB1 wouldn't be able to correct see that image. With your model number I can look up a booklet and find the option.

Man I love SO. That last screenshot is awesome.

If anyone wants to throw me an invite to the Preview Program, I wouldn't say 'No.' :)
