I bet it's a game that will bomb like a motherfucker and that nobody in the ECKSBOCKS XTREMETEAM is gonna give a rat's ass about.

Jettradamus status confirmed total.

There was a C64 ping pong game, i loved it. Maybe they will use the right analogue stick, kinda like Fight Night.
Yeah, Konami's Ping Pong on C64 was really awesome, very addictive. :)

So which would you rather have, Top Spin 2 or Ping Pong for $40? I'll stick with the real tennis, thank you very much.
Yeah because table tennis is the same as regular tennis, only fake.

From the surface, this really seems like a lame announcement and something that just should have appeared on EB's coming soon list. However, after reading the interview, I am a bit excited to see the final product. He did a great job selling the game.

No interest in a ping pong game for me. This is an odd choice of a game for RockStar, but it's not one that gets me upset/angry over the fact that they could be working on a new GTA or anything. They have plenty of resources and it's not like they're wasting time on this. Just a different game for them.

Well, I doubt Rockstar has a huge team on this game anyway.

From the IGN piece:

Sam Houser: Mainly because we absolutely love table tennis and wanted to try and make something that could show the audience what could be possible -- on a relatively focused level -- in the next generation of videogames. Our mission brief at Rockstar has been clear to us from when we founded the company -- to make titles with innovative game play about subject matters we were interested in. We have always been a company that likes to take risks, and do things differently from everyone else. For us this does not just mean gangster films, or car chases or westerns (much as we still love them), but anything that we think is interesting and has not been successfully handled elsewhere in a videogame. From our perspective, table tennis fitted the bill perfectly -- especially as games with a very strong two-player component are very fun to make -- and play! Above all, Table Tennis allows us to showcase what we believe the key characteristics of the high definition era of console gaming will be. These are not just higher resolution graphics, but using higher resolution graphics and hugely advanced animation systems to impart physical and emotional information to the player, so that the control and tactics of the game are more real and more diverse than on current-generation titles. To put it another way -- improved animation and higher resolution graphics on their own are not enough -- but when the can directly improve the quality of gameplay and experience, then they become very interesting. We were keen to test out these theories on a smaller scale, and Table Tennis felt like the perfect fit. And, yes, you will be able to hold the racquet in both styles.

I heart Rockstar. Not all their projects hit, of course, but they definitely have a much different and healthier approach towards video games than other big dogs like EA and Activision.

A title that is sure to kill the Revolution... when MS reveals that it uses their new MSmote at E3. :lol

Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks this game looks pretty cool. I have to admit, the ultra-advanced character models (complete with sweat-shading... the new lens flare) look a bit silly in a game about ping pong, but this game has the potential to be awesomely fun. Think Mario Tennis.

This would be awesome on the revolution though.

Hot Coffee Fallout, Rockstar needs to change their reputation of just being THE game company for debachery and gore and sex and violence. Now they can point to this steaming pile and be like LOOK ! NO VIOLENCE NO DRUGS NO SEX (NO FUN)!

Well you could look it at the bright side of things, just think about GTA4 when looking to the screenies of this game. nice gfx indeed!

:lol :lol

Christ, I have a 360 but this is just amazingly comical. Yeah, it could end up being really good and all, but still.
:lol :lol

Well it certainly was unexpected. And indeed, IGN could have milked the anticipation for this FAR more than they did..it would have been far worse, and far more of a "let down" if they'd simply said "Rockstar. Xbox 360. Exclusive" ;)

Still, I think it's kind of cool. I wouldn't pay full price for it, though, not by a long shot. When I think of this, I think of the type of game you spend 15 minutes with on the net or something - though obviously this will be a hell of a lot more sophisticated graphically etc.

Ok..
I understand now. MS is readying for a China release and wanted a killer app for the launch! Ping pong pals will be the Halo in china... ;)

(on a more serious note... not entirely what was expected, this game will not make any difference whatsoever in the consolewars, but could be a nice little little addition to the portfolio.)

Making a dual analog table tennis game (right stick being used to control the racket) could be very fun actually.

this looks great!!

i'm really pleasantly surprised by this announcement. i thought rockstar could become boring but not if they keep doing creative things and take risks like this.

I for one welcome our new table tennis playing overlords.
More seriously, could this be from the game?
Edit: fake

How can people say things like that without any impressions of this game?

Hey hey hey, I never did say which one I prefer. I only said I would choose the real tennis, is it table top tennis or tennis? You can't say.

Seriously, the game looks alright. It's pretty different, don't think I would spend $40 on it though. Would have been better at $30. If it was on Xbox, it probably would have been $30. Unless there is a lot more to, $40 doesn't seem justified to me. But their probably will be alot more to it so we'll see.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for, too. Left stick controls movement, right stick controls arm and paddle. Button presses are so 90's. :P

lol at everything :lol

Ping Pong is pretty cool though, and it would be fun in multiplayer. I wouldn't pay anything near full price (£50) for it though.

I'm hesitant to think so only because that's Rockstar North's logo, whereas San Diego's is purple, and the main Rockstar logo is yellow. Though it could easily be a tech demonstration developed by North, which San Diego might implemet.

I'd rather play ping pong in real life. I'd say the same for Tennis, but I'm a lazy bastard who doesn't like to run so Top Spin ftw!

I guess we're guaranteed some awesome ping pong mini game in the next GTA.

I love how gamesites always say "we've got some news about a game you won't believe!" and that always gets people speculating things which are quite believable. Then the announcement comes out and everyone is pissed because they're in disbelief.

Meh if it was branded under 2K Sports, nobody would have cried/laughed about it.
Not true. It is IGN's fault people are laughing at the announcement.

another disappointment. how can this game be any better than the real thing? table tennis is one of those few sports that anyone can play in their home. it's not like the equipment costs much or you have to join a club. hell, the £ shop sells rackets, balls and a little plastic net.

Will this honestly sell to 360 owners?

I know people get tired of the "everything is better with the revmote" attitude but at least the game would have a marketable gimmick. This just seems pointless.
