XCOM 2 PC performance thread

Just wanted to note that the popular .ini tweaks made my performance worse. Before them, I was able to keep the game above 30fps (and usually above 45fps) below native res with a mix of settings. Afterwards, lots of drops into the teens at weird moments. Restored the original. ini, back to 30-60fps (and >60 on first loading the game, but that's another matter).

Near identical performance, with an included SLI profile that has the same bugs as the homebrew ones (missing cover icons)

I wonder if the developers even know about the sli cover icon issue.

I'll be holding off on buying the game till they fix it.

They should, considering both XCOM:EU and EW had the same exact issue with the same exact complaints...

I don't even remember if a patch fixed it. There were multiple workarounds (roll back to really old drivers, adjusting the AA_mode_selector_SLIAA bits, running the game in XP compatibility mode, etc) so I eventually played it with SLI cover icons. But who knows if it was ever fixed/mentioned by the developers

No workarounds for XCOM 2 yet =/

First patch appears to be out on Steam:

http://steamcommunity.com/games/268500/announcements/detail/843667188501609284

Details:

XCOM 2 Patch Notes
Player is unable to progress to scan in the Geoscape after completing the Resistance Communications research via Tutorial – This will fix previously affected saves.
Unable to load saves with a Chryssalid Cocoon – This will fix the issue, and for previously affected saves.
Adjustments were made to Texture Streaming to assist with periodic frame spikes.
Using the preview voice button for a modded voice pack will no longer crash the game when in the armory.
Removed 8x MSAA from default Max settings.

Hotfix helped a little but it's still pretty bad for me. Everything on low I get 15-30 fps. If I try max and turn off MSAA and things such as that I get around 10-30 fps. So I don't know anymore. I literally tried ever hotfix and anything else that has been mentioned but it doesn't help. It's not like my PC is horrible either:

i7-960
980
16 GB
W10

This is the only game I have issues with. Guess I'll just wait for their major patch.

I'm starting to notice a pattern with those old i7s or it could be just random What's your cpu usage during gameplay? Does the fps change when you disable vsync? Try also alt tabbing and back into the game to check if anything changes.

Might want to try overclocking that 960. I have a i7 920 at 4ghz and with a GTX 970 I'm getting mostly 60fps at all times during gameplay with everything on max except AA and shadow quality. The only times I get drops is when aiming grenades, having grenades explode, and during the before and after mission briefing in the plane.

Thats with 12gb ram and also W10.

I can play Battlefront maxed with over 90 fps, I can play the Witcher 3 maxed with over 60 fps. Yet, I can't play a TBS that isn’t even that demanding on low. Yes, my CPU is old, but the old i7s are still more than capable of playing new releases.

I have it overclocked to 3.8ghz.

Something's off then, I just double checked and I actually have everything maxed/on with FXAA instead of MSAA and I'm sitting at 64FPS on the main menu. Running windowed borderless with vsync off. In game it tends to sit 59-60, sometimes higher, except when the grenades come into play or heavy destruction.

Finally finished my first playthrough last night, and I can say I had no performance/technical issues until the very last bit of the game where
you're tasked with killing the avatars while new pods of enemies keep spawning at every turn
. At that point my game slowed down to a crawl, the UI began to do strange things, the graphics engine started to render assets incorrectly, etc. Thankfully, loading my last save back up a couple of times allowed me to get through to the end. Sadly, my lasting impression of the game in its current state is that it can be a technical broken mess at times.

EDIT: 5820K @ 4.5Ghz, Titan X @ 1382Mhz, Win 10 x64 Pro.

It's possible that XCOM is more demanding on the CPU than Battlefront.

Haven't dipped on this yet because of the performance complaints, I am rocking a 3970x OC'd at 4.6 and a GTX 980 (OC'd) with 32GB ram and an SSD, is it possible to get a smooth 60fps on this at 1080p?

Seems a bit of a coin flip.
I'm on 970 and have decent performance provided I cut back on couple of settings, whereas some people seem to have serious issues and aren't getting good gpu utilization at all.

Welp, I'm done with this game. Don't buy XCOM 2 until Firaxis figures out what the fuck is wrong with their game.

It's terrible because I really love XCOM 2. Nothing delivers gameplay quite like it, and it's a huge improvement over EW to me. But goddamn I can't end a mission without the screen getting stuck between loading the returning ship cutscene. Not to mention the terrible performance overall. If this was near endgame I'd be fine with it but I only just finished the Shadow Chamber and suddenly all the menus are broken because the buttons disappear when I hover over them.

If anything I think their patch made things worse for me.

I spoke too soon on the performance. I did a blacksite mission, and with walls being blown up, and some fires going, the framerate was in the 20's on a 970 with settings turned down.

That's actually pretty normal and predictable. Firaxis ran into the same problem during EU's development. It's the price you pay for getting such extensive map destructibility.

Game seems to be running relatively smoother now during certain situations after turning off Intel turbo boost on my CPU, and instead overclocking from 3.5ghz to 4.0ghz. No framedrops after firing an incendiary grenade at a group of enemies, and it stayed smooth during the transitions between the follow-up reaction shots from my squad.

So I find that the game uses a lot RAM. On the Avenger I'm using over 11GB and on the battle map it goes down to 7 or 8, sometimes 9. I'm sure it never used to be this high. Maybe it's the mods I have?

Good to hear.
Sounds like it's almost playable now. Still going to wait for a huge discount though.

Spirited

Mine is pretty and pink
Just got to the last mission and while watching the cinematic before the mission start my PC restarts. Never happened before and it only happens when I try to do the last mission, I have no idea why this is the case.

Ive upgraded to windows 10 from 7 and now in my game i dont get any speech from central, science guy or engineer woman. its weird. they do speak on the cut scenes, just never in mission or any of the idle chat on the base/ship. it feels lonely without central telling me to save those civilians.

I had the same problem. Verifying the Steam files solved mine.

Game runs generally fine for me on High settings but I do get weird checkerboard patterns in missions. More annoying than a serious problem but is there a way to get rid of them? Spec is:

i5-4460 @ 3.2ghz
Radeon R9 380
16gb RAM

Any new news within the past week on a patch?

There is one in the pipeline.

Texture rendering issues generally point to either GPU instability or imminent GPU death. Use Afterburner to see how hot the GPU gets under load; <80 is fine and would point to the latter.

The GPU temp is fine and I'd be surprised if the GPU was dying as I got it less than a month ago. All my other games run fine. Do appreciate the advice, though.

I did look around and other people with my card have the same issue, so I guess I'll just wait for a driver update or something.

Additionally, we’re preparing a patch that will include performance optimizations and gameplay bug fixes. We will have more info to share on this very soon.
Their DLC announcement included the announcement of a patch announcement with an ETA of "very soon"
