Xenoblade announced for New 3DS

Ok, my first comment was just based on the announcement. Just finished watching the trailer and frankly, it looks like shit. I guess that interview with Miyamoto foreshadowed this where he mentioned not going all out for casual gamers cause this is def. for the hardcore IMO.

I'm gonna get it and the new 3DS.

It's the only portable console with support going forward now (and that's how I like to play).

I never played the game on Wii so this will be all new for me.

Be advised though, this hasn't been announced yet outside of Japan, and I reckon that is not a given.

We all are aware that handhelds and JRPGs are very popular in Japan, so in the light of this this announcement in a Japan-only ND makes sense.

Nintendo, I really want to play Xenoblade, but damn. Can't see this selling at all. How do you explain to the mass market that in order to play their new line of premium games, you have to buy a new system which looks exactly like the previous one and also has the same name? Atleast the gameboy > gameboy color brought something visual with the.. well.. colors.

They managed it with the transition from Wii to Wii U really we-oh wait no. Yeah, it's gonna be a tough sell, I agree. That's exactly why I don't see them dedicating their full attention to producing N3DS exclusive games. But only time will tell. I think *New* at the very least is a much better differentiation than 'U'.

If they were a hardcore gamer they should play this on a Wii (or emulated) regardless.

I was excited at first bbut then I saw the screenshots...hope its just because the game is still early and compressed video.

Port of the original? If so then I can probably live without it. Based on the one pic, I sure hope it looks a little clearer at least but it's nice if it's the full game on the go.

What's the point of this? Sorry Nintendo I was actually considering looking at this game, but you just alienated your consumer base so nope.

Too bad for the DS--> DSi, older smartphones to newer ones, older PCs to newer ones, Gameboy to Gameboy color, etc.

And the new model actually has a bunch going for it then just brightness and screen size guys
Cell phones and PC's aren't closed platforms. Hardly a comparison to consoles.

But hey since the other two examples are Nintendo platforms, I guess this shit should be expected from them. I guess I should be more cautious buying from them since they like to screw over earlier hardware adapters.

Wait so why are people upset? I thought there would be more complaining about it not coming to Wii U and that's understandable but the game looks pretty rough on the New 3DS as it is. How do you expect it to run on a normal 3DS with a less powerful CPU?

This is an easy title to show people how much more powerful the new hardware is. Nintendo's plan is to extend the 3DS generation for a few more years without a huge leap in hardware. So this is basically the first showcase title for 3DS 2.0.

but how much powerful is the new 3DS ? Enough to last a few years ?

Xenoblade is still Wii/PS2 level.

I wonder how many of you people were mad when the GBC came out and got exclusive games or even the DSi. You people really need to get over it, this isn't the first time they have done this. Nintendo and third parties will still release games for both models because 45 million as well as make exclusives for the newer ones.

I wonder what you'd say if Microsoft or Sony did this.

Sheesh the tiers are going to be confusing for consumers.

  • 2DS
  • 3DS
  • 3DS XL
  • New 3DS
  • New 3DS XL

Not to mention only the new ones play certain games.

If they are going this route, they might as well have made a new handheld entirely and just said its not backwards compatible.

Don't act like this is the same product but then lock off the games because you want to be greedy and artificially extend the life of your aging platform's brand name because you are scared you can't replicate the success with a new line.

This is almost a Sega like move in my personal opinion.

Holy shit, are you serious? Progress? It's a fucking revision. Even though Nintendo does this since GB, this shit shouldn't cut these days.

No way in hell I'll be buying the revision (which doesn't even look good at all) for exclusives. If it was a new hardware, no one would be complaining.

What about the hardware revision doesn't look good to you?

And with that new processor, it's closer to new hardware than most revisions, I think.

What's the point of this? Sorry Nintendo I was actually considering looking at this game, but you just alienated your consumer base so nope.

It means they're not in a hurry to make a new handheld. Increased power, intergrated Amiibo support, and expanded controls means they can make software for 3DS for the next 2+ years with a few exclusives for the new version.

Questioning why people are getting so mad over not being able to play a much worse version of Xenoblade on their 3ds. Do yourselves a favor and go buy a used Wii for next to nothing and then a copy of the Wii version of the game for $50 or so, can guarantee you'll get that much more enjoyment out of it than the handheld version of it and you'll have a bigger library of games to choose from. Better yet, buy a WiiU for the "sequel" and the potential hd version of the game, save yourself from having to buy "yet another system to play bigger and better games on".

Even without going out and buying a Wii and it's version of the game, do you seriously think a regular 3ds would come even close to handling one of the biggest/best looking(debatable) games for the Wii at a decent rate? They are bringing out a new version of the 3ds so you even have the chance to play a sub par version of the game, without a new system you wouldn't even be having this argument as there would be no chance of the game even being on it.

NeoGAF: The place where fanboy-wars are fought over frames and specs, but how dare Nintendo bringing better hardware after 3.5 years!
Yeh right. I haven't even got a 3DS but I can see how current 3DS owners would be real pissed at this.

Didn't hurt the GBC and DSi
The DSi was stupid yeh, but the GBC was different enough, B&W > colour for example, so you can't compare that to this situation.

Are some seriously defending this shit?
What is you problem with it? The 3DS is too crap to run this downport. The New 3DS can pull it off with downgraded textures, framerate problems and pop-in. Why not let people have a reason to buy New 3DS?

It is almost like would you rather they just cancel this and have new 3DS with circle pad pro built-in, NFC reader and faster web browser as the reason to buy (all important issues).

Given how it is TBA outside of Japan I doubt there will be a tide of exclusive software. I'd expect to see more slightly enhanced software though.

I am aware of that. I am arguing that they shouldn't release a 3DS game that can't be run on 3DS and 3DS XL then. It is a stupid decision.

It isn't a 3DS game, it is a New 3DS game. It is like when iPad apps can't run on certain version iPads. It doesn't happen often but it does happen.

I don't think we'll see many New 3DS exclusives but I'm sure there will be a few.

The new 3DS still is a 3DS. Its games should be playable in regular 3DSes.
Thing is, you can apply it to what came before too.

The gameboy colour was still a gameboy, it's games should still have been playable in regular gameboys.
The Nintendo DSi was still a DS, it's games should still have been playable in regular DSes.

Except the exclusives games made use of hardware that made them unfeasible on the original systems. I refuse to believe xenoblade could have played at a reasonable frame rate on a OG 3DS.

I have no doubt that the majority of games will continue to be made targetting the OG 3DS line, but there will be a few that wouldn't have been feasible. Should they then just not have made those games, or sat on them for 2+ more years for a proper 3ds successor?

Maybe some people would like to have Xenoblade on a handheld, own a 3DS, but still wont be able to play this? That's gotta be fairly frustrating.

This all works out wonderfully for me because I've held off on buying a 3DS so far, but I can totally understand why others aren't too pleased.

this is weird, this game feels very out of place being on a small handheld in even lower resolution. Also weird making it exclusive to the new hw rev though I guess there are technical reasons for that

should have done a Wii U port instead imo

Hmm that's so true except:

My old PHAT PS2 plays "every" PS2 game.

My old phat PS3 plays "every" PS3 game.

My old PSP plays "every" PSP game.

I don't see my Vita 1000 being unable to play future Vita games.

My launch 360 seems to be able to play every 360 game.

My launch wii seems to be able to play every wii game.

So much for every electronic device ever.

Oh c'mon stop complaining. We're all rich and can afford every new redesign hardware, but this time with improved CPU so we can finally play that one game. Oh thank you Nintendo.

Missed opportunity. New 3DS? What is that? This game screams HD, would be much better if on the Wii U. I can't imagine playing a 100 hour rpg on a small screen.

Is it going to be the Xenoblade Wii game ported, or a new Xenoblade game?

After seeing the trailer, thanks but no thanks. I'll replay the Wii version on my WiiU gamepad. Or if they have the sense to make an HD port alongside the new XcX. And i'm certainly not going to buy a new 3DS for an inferior version.

I wonder how the feedback will be, because an inferior port could taint the hype for XcX.
