Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

Nice scores. Not too much into review score these days but this should at least help publicize the game a little. 4 more days!

Like I said, Polygon is the outlier, ignore them.

Great reviews all around, I knew this was going to be over 80 metacritic.
Just because a review is an outlier it's not a reason to ignore it. And it's not like 7's a bad score even.

Read it and disagree with it all you want though, but no reason to be a fanboy (no offense).

on GAF, the most important reviews are the lowest scoring

Come on now, Polygon is not well-liked here for a lot of reasons. Best to pay them no mind. Outliers from other sources sure, but not Polygon.

I'm not being a fanboy, a 7 from anyone else is fine.

Awesome scores! Was worried based off the initial import impressions and reviews, but it seems like it's pretty damn good.

I just wish the HUD wasn't so damn intrusive.

you can turn off various elements of the HUD or the entire thing if you want

Or people can read their review instead of shitting on it for no reason other than "the score is too low, they're just an outlier!" Actual discussion is better than blanket statements that aren't backed up at all. But from your posts, looks like you don't have anything substantial to contribute about it.

Im more excited to hear the discussion on podscasts for this game. Dunno if ill ever play it tho, doesnt fit my lifestyle.

Story/world is enchanced with the side quests otherwise it's a straight line if you stick only to main story.

I've seen almost no review talking about the characters and Eurogamer only glances at any of the themes the game tackles.

These reviews are all about the exploration side.

Wasn't that ages ago? Those Eurogamer impressions were pretty solid.

8-4's impressions were also off the charts too. They worked on the localization and were really excited too.

Yeah I know, but a lot of people still clung on to those negative impressions. It's something that happens all the time here and on other gaming forums - for most things, people put much more stock in the negatives than in the positives.

Excellent critical reception. I am pleased.

Fuck, who am I kidding. I have this game pre-ordered and paid for since June. It might have scored in the low 2-s and I still would have played it for hundreds of hours.

This game is the sole reason I still haven't thrown away my WiiU (zero hopes for Zelda right now).

Why zero hopes???

That review complained a lot about the HUD, which can be turned off though.

So this is likely the highest scoring game (so far) in Monolith's history? Amazing if so. Based on the reviews I'm expecting this to be a better game than Xenoblade, which is incredible since I heard XB itself is amazing. Good times.

Maybe they will re-review it.

Re-reading the review it states this:

You can turn off bits and pieces of this cluttered HUD in the options menu, but I never managed to find a combo that elegantly provided the information I needed in battle without also making things look messy.

That's a shame. Sounds like some of the clutter is necessary to do the things you need to do.

There isn't much of a story and it's spread thin across what's mainly character-driven side quests. It takes multiple hours to unlock the next story mission, and there aren't a lot.

The game's bread and butter are affinity quests, which are goofy little character vignettes.

Oh really, that's good news.

The Polygon review made it sound like it couldn't.

The fact that he's dedicating so much space to the UI is a bit strange for me, And somehow contradictory.

Because he says:

That red outline, which I added, shows the portion of the screen that's actually devoted to ... you know, seeing that beautiful world and the things happening in the environment around you.

but then

You can turn off bits and pieces of this cluttered HUD in the options menu, but I never managed to find a combo that elegantly provided the information I needed in battle without also making things look messy.

So either it's useless info (not dedicated to you) or useful info, pick one.

So even Polygon mentions that you can turn off the HUD parts.

Kidding aside, Eurogamer and Jimquisition reviews are quite glowing (the text I mean).

I don't think anything will be stranger than the mindset that some people adopted as a result of Kotaku's import review that this wasn't going to do well with reviewers and seemed undeterred in that determination. I don't even think it was fanboy shenanigans, either; just doom and gloom where it was largely unwarranted.

Very good scores, although the Gamespot text seems more negative than positive, which is a little worrying. Sounds like there are a bunch of flaws, but overall it's a good experience.
