Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

I hope the game doesn't have like secret boss ass mech parts/mechs locations you can only find and not buy.

Or do you build it from the store?

Cause if I have to find cool shit, fuck all that son I'm buying the guide.

Imo, the game is so big that if you want to find something really specific and how to obtain it, better buy the guide.

This is probably the first game in roughly 10 years that I've bought the guide for.

Ugh. Might get the digital guide then. I have enough guides with all of the Witcher 3 books and the Fallout 4 guide.

I can't have a book collection of guides for big open world rpgs lol

Polygon hates life and video games

In fact Polygon and Game Radar had the same issue with the game : they kinda disliked that the game doesn't hold their hand (so no tutorial for 5+ hours). So I think, they felt overwhelmed and were maybe not used to rpgs.

Destructoid review kinda nailed that : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDURTlzzhV4
Same with other reviewers said : that game isn't for newbies because it won't held their hands.

What guide is everyone planning to get for this?
Not sure if there is another one other than this one - http://www.amazon.com/dp/0744016738/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Prima Guide seems to be the only one.

They're either useful or not.

It was a great use for Witcher 3, helped me find all of the armor pieces I wanted and explained campaign choices, not to mention learn the game's systems.

For Fallout 4 it was a massive disappointment, didn't even tell me collectible locations I felt a bit cheated.

Like I'll feel cheated if I can't make Geralt of Rivia in this game.

As someone who hasn't played the game, Polygon's review seemed fair. It wasn't the lack of tutorial that they had issue with. It was the lack of any explanation for 3/4 of the mechanics in the game (and the busy UI, and story issues, etc).

I didn't get the impression they wanted their hand held with a 5 hour tutorial.

Hmm, I think I might just grab the digital one and avoid the potential let down here, thank you for the heads up I have been forcing myself to avoid following this game until launch day so the wait doesn't seem as bad :P

There is no spoiler in it, lol.

Anyway, GameXplain review is also nice to watch because they take 5 mins to explain why the story isn't that blend if you take the time to do the story side quests.
Each reviewers do highlight the good points of the game without going overbroad, I liked what I read/watched. Still I didn't read them all, lol

Edit : well someone resumed a bit
When Nintendo has many tutorials, NINTENDO IS HOLDING OUR HAND TOO MUCH.

Now, XENOBLADE X IS TOO COMPLICATED AND NO ONE IS HOLDING OUR HAND

ordered the hardcover from amazon will not even ship until the launch :(

They tend to change the shipping to Day of release a day or two before. Go chat with customer support like tomorrow to see if it has changed per chance.

Digital is probably the way to go. Only 10 bucks and you get all the info with a quick Ctrl+F haha

I was a huge fan of Saga games, Resonance of Fate and Legend of Legacy. I like obscure mechanics that you have to figure out by yourself. A negative for Polygon is a positive for a lot of players in this case.

Right, there is a difference between not properly explaining the game mechanics and wanting your hand held.

And that's certainly fine, as you know what you like (including disagreeing with Polygon's points, which is also fair). I take their score and review as a warning to a large contingent of gamers that may not like obscure mechanics, and the other drawbacks they found with this game. They know their core audience fairly well, I'd assume.

I'm also not concerned about the obscure mechanics. I had no issues figuring things out in XC:3D, and think it is a pretty fantastic game so far.

please give me a link to the digital version I'll get that too XD

This is probably the first game in roughly 10 years that I've bought the guide for.

Same here, this is one of the only games I've seen that I know I'm going to want to do everything I can but I don't have the 300 hours available to find it all on my own. I'm really looking forward to trying the digital guide too, I've never used one before.

If you buy the hardcover I'm almost certain you get the digital copy included so don't double dip until you confirm if you can have it day 1.

For the digital guide by itself option though:
http://www.primagames.com/games/xenoblade-chronicles-x/products

It's the second one. 10 bucks for the digital, around 24 for the hardcover collector's edition that gives you access to the digital guide too.

Unless you REALLY want the book though, the digital guide is fine. I really wanted the books and the included goodies with the Witcher 3 and Fallout 4.

The explanations were in the manual of the game... others reviewers said it too so they didntt had problem like Polygon and Game Radar had.
It's nice to take Polygon point of view but don't forget the other 30+ reviewers too, please
I'm not saying either of them were wrong but they may have missed some stuff that have made them felt that way that other reviewers didn't missed.

That's why it's important to have a community thread like of Gaf or Reddit or elsewhere, because when you think you missed something there will be always someone to explain it to you or give a hint where to search if you forgot to check the manual or the wiki.

Heh I used that 30% off a book code during BF on Amazon to get the hard cover for like 17. holiday30 was the code, wonder if it still works

I'll get that if amazon does not send a code day 1
I'll gift the other code to a gaffer

I don't know why I keep thinking it'll work in Canada. It's like I forget, see it mentioned and then get disappointed. I'll probably only buy it after I finish the game, and even then it might be a while and sold out. Can just look it up online.

Absolutely. I'm not disputing the validity of their review, just saying my tastes are definitely not in phase with theirs (and never have been). :D

found my prepaid Amex cards I got from work last year...and used it for a wine fridge for my GF for xmas and Xenoblade X for myself. was going to wait to get this for a while to let online wiki's catch up (I relied on them for the first game) but will be fine just exploring and adventuring on my own for a while!

Keep in mind that the guides are currently slated by every order I've seen mentioned (including my own) to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday next week, not with the game on Friday.

If Amazon can't get it to me Friday, I'll just buy it at Gamestop.

This thing actually limited or "limited" like halo games? I got the CE on preorder from amazon and tempted to cancel it unless there is some tremendous value in this thing. Not that I am not interested just that I have little time and tons of other games already in my hands.

Will it be naive of me to rely on my online squadmates to supply me with enough information on material etc locations?.

I'm generally against using guides or outside help for any game.

Any why is it not Friday yet!.

Just litle reminder for people who didn't read it : XenobladeX Iwata ask
Interesting to read specialy why Skells are not unlocked at the start of the game.

Help may come late since we will all be diving into it XD

I like this part:

Takeda: I agree with you. When writing the script, we thought of places that would be great to include in the game for the story, and the staff rarely said "no" to adding it in.

Kojima: In comparison to how it was with Xenoblade Chronicles and also other games in general, we did not have to be so restrictive about the places to appear in this game.

Takeda: This was probably because the volume of this game was big enough to fit it all in. After all, this is the same staff that was determined to create a whole planet. (laughs)

I hate that Soraya Saga isn't writing for these games. Her work is amazing and so much better than what was offered in XB.

Man looking at screens and videos of this makes me realize how flat most open worlds are. I feel like the verticality of the game is what I'm excited for the most.

Indeed

Look at how many levels that place had, I counted like 2 or 3 ?
Even 4 if count the top of some mountains.

I know how you feel. A lot of open world games falls in the trap of having huge worlds but not actually having anything interesting to look at in said world. Take the Witcher 3 for example, the environments consists mostly of generic forests, plains and mountains. They look good sure but nothing in them really stands out.

Just bought the digital guide... my first guide i've bought since Wind Waker for the GC :D

Thanks for the Iwata Asks link btw Chaos, haven't seen that yet!
I really wish the NoE would get with the times and do E-Shop pre-loads. I have a fast connection but having to wait for over 20GB to download when all I want to do is play isn't exactly ideal.

Yo. I had no idea Victor Lucas was still in the reviewing games business. This is almost the best part of the entire thread.

I think it's been on G4 in Canada for awhile but will no longer be on the air on TV next year. I guess they are moving to Youtube. Hopefully, they get more exposure because I love Vic's reviews.
