Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

I'm wondering that too, it's what ruined my excitement for the game after a while. Thankfully these recent reviews have me hyped again, I can't wait

Hah, I'm on the same page. After those initial reviews (was it really just Kotaku that disliked it?) I pretty much wrote this game off, considering Xenoblade Chronicles to just be a one-off thing that was somehow good. Now I'm starting to get super excited again!

people put way too much stock in that one Kotaku preview (from a guy who is on the record for not liking the well-loved previous game)

WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE THIS????

Damn it Monolith. One step forward and two steps back.

This is definitely a huge bummer unless it's very quick/easy to level up all the characters. If I can just go out and use my main character to kill a high level enemy and that ding them up a few levels itself, fine. Otherwise, it's going to be a pain when I want to do some of their affinity missions to learn more about the characters. I've *always* hated when RPGs don't let all the characters level up together (I know a lot of older RPGs did this, even some of my favorites like FFIX) regardless of if they are in the group or not. I just don't have the time to level up everyone like that anymore. :(

Especially when there's like, 18 different playable characters and you can only bring 3 at a time.

C'mon guys, that just means there's more game to play, right? =)

Vecks pointed out it's probably necessary for the open world design. The alternative would be to have all enemies automatically scale to your level, which would take away from the exploration aspect imo.

It almost seems like it was intentional, to encourage you to play with all the squad mates, but it'll definitely be tough micromanaging the equipment of all 18. But if you aren't interested in the stories of every squad mate I doubt you even have to use them all (so the grind will probably be gentler on replay)

Yeah... I wonder if there's some really quick ways to level people up. I'm sure someone will find something quick/easy. I still don't know if I'll level up everyone despite wanting to learn more about them via their quests. Elma and Lin will be my "main" crew anyway.

It's kinda silly in a way though because you can't switch out your main character. So you're team will be have like a lvl40 person then your other 3 will be lvl10. It wouldn't be very balanced. Fighting lvl40s would destroy the other people and fighting lvl10s would be too easy and not benefit your own character at all (besides affinity - do you still get affinity when you complete one of the QTEs like in Xenoblade?).

I'll probably find the ones I like the most and just roll with that party most of the time, like Chrono Cross. I wish there were more RPGs balanced for larger party sizes, but I'm sure that could get overwhelming for both the player and the hardware, especially if they're all shouting at once.

So cool this game is getting great reception on the media.

Freaking NoA, looks like they are sending this game to die isn'it?? They haven't tweeted a single thing about it and we're just two weeks away of release. They are about to release a game that is technically bigger than Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 (according to media) and they have been doing nothing to promote it so far. Depressing stuff. Then the game will bomb and we would probably never going to get another game as massive such as this by Monolith Soft on future Nintendo platforms... Frustration.

So I've always meant to ask or find out, but... when you get out of your Skell and leave it behind, what happens to it? Do you have to manually go back to get it or can you summon it again? Does it go back to the garage if you return to NLA?

You have the option to teleport to it. And if you quick travel, it comes along with you.

So far I've seen you can return to your Skell, so you'll fast travel to wherever it is. I'd like to imagine if you return to NLA without your Skell it returns along with you.

So if you're exploring a cave, once you finish I imagine you can circumvent trying to leave on-foot by just returning to your Skell.

Edit: I remember a certain Tyrant that was very weak (assuming you're level 60 with a respectable Skell) and gave a nice chunk of experience, plus it was very close to a fast travel point so you could infinitely grind off it and get everyone's levels and affinity up quickly. Hope it hasn't been touched.

Oh that's pretty cool, thanks! :)

Bigger than Fallout 4, Skyrim and The Witcher 3 combined? Is this legit or hyperbole? Also, how does it compare in terms of denseness, detail, unique places environmental storytelling, etc?

I ask not in an attempt to deride XCX, but because I didn't play the original and haven't followed this one that closely.

I mean, if (IF) it's a super large a pretty world that is mostly empty is that better? But if it's really that large with all the bells and whistles then that is most impressive.

It's absolutely true in terms of actual size.
According to many previews from Western review sites, the world is more fun and rewarding to exploring than the other open world games released this year.

I think it's true strictly speaking (though such comparison's are pretty meaningless IMO, since we're talking about size in m^2 in a virtual world where how big a m^2 is isn't well defined, and where things like movement speed and such are very different). If you want an idea of what there is to do in the world and how it looks like, I recommend watching Gamexplain's 3 hour stream they made today. Shows off the games systems and a wide range of environments really well. It's pretty much spoiler free, so no need to worry about that

I agree, comparisons about game world size are pointless since this game's open world had to be design with the mechs in mind. They had to made it big with lots of verticality considering the mobility mechs give you.
The open world apparently not having other towns like Xenoblade is one of my gripes with the game but still, visually they look amazing and hopefully fun to explore.

So how many affinity missions are there in the game? Is it like one per party member or more?

I dunno how many the DLC (now included) characters have (I'd assume at least one each) but I think there were almost 40 affinity missions in the Japanese version. Sadly I don't have a review copy and don't know who would be far enough to ask.

What is the word with co-op? It seems to be an unusual setup with the whole 32 random group but hook up with 4 people thing, but I can mostly only find people complaining about it not being local multiplayer and not a lot of meat. Any good breakdowns or detailed info anywhere?

edit: details like is it available right from the start or do you have to play X hours? Can all content be played multiplayer or are there special co-op quests? How does permanence work, like if I play with a friend and we complete one of their quests does that count for me as well or will I need to repeat it as the 'quest leader'? Does the game rebalance based on the number of people in your co-op group? On and on...etc..etc..

Sorry for being out of the loop. Is there no way to pre-order the special edition anymore? I'm assuming it's sold out since Best Buy has no stock left, but any info would be appreciated. (U.S.)

Well that's not really true in strict sense, but I'll let you find out yourself.

Based on what I've read, I can answer the first two questions.

1) You need to unlock the co-op quests based on completing other tasks in the game (I believe it's the 32-player quests). I'm not sure how long it takes, but I think it depends on what you focus on.
2) It's specific co-op quests for the 4-player stuff. The 32-player stuff is constantly layered on top of the game.

Have we heard anything about storage for items? It was a huge pain in the ass to sell off stuff in XC and then need it for a random mission near the end of the game. And especially with parts of the world lost, it want possible to get some things back.

With armor and weapons I sold off stuff o wasn't using, but I loved seeing the different designs, so I'm hoping we have bigger pouches or some kind of storage box

New LA being big right? Still, I guess i can see what they were going for with the unpopulated alien world idea.
I would've preferred the game structure being similar to the first Xenoblade but with the multiplayer aspect being a big part of this game, that probably was never gonna happen.

I heard the cap was raised really high and from the Gamexplain stream, Derrick said that excess is sold off when you pick it up.

How did you misread his comment that hard

Color me excited! As a big fan of Xenoblade Chronicles, I wanted to go in this game blind like I did for the original game. The impressions look great, so I'll stick with that until release and then dig in to all the gameplay details.

Sounds amazing. Probably one of the only games that makes me want to pick up a WiiU. If I were younger and had more disposable income I'd pick one up, but I can't justify the purchase of another console for just one game right now. Is it terrible that I'm kind of hoping for a WiiU firesale ala the $99 Gamecube once the NX hits?

Well I thought New LA was only hub or town in the game, being divided into several big areas. Guess I was wrong.
It is kinda. But besides the nopon villages, lets just say that NLA gains some rather unusual new areas lol
I really don't wanna spoil you, so forget about it, just think that humans are definitely not alone on the universe.

Nope, seems like a good strategy if you're low on cash, the games are not going anywhere. In fact if Nintendo keeps it's backwards compatibility idea going, you only need to buy every other Nintendo console to play the game(s) you want.

Cool thanks for the info, sounds interesting especially the unusual areas thing.

I noticed that too. NoE is already in full hype mode tweeting more about this game than about the two coming out next this week (deservedly so), while from NoA there is nothing except for Bill RT some of the comments from reviewers.

NoA's simply doing what they do best.
