I'm just wondeing what people are using on their laptops. When I've been configuring my prospective laptop I've been choosing XP Pro for like $80 more, but after looking at the bullet-list of the differences between the two here I'm wondering if Pro is even worth it on the laptop.

I'm used to using Pro - I use it on my Desktop PC - but I never really use many of its features, such as remote desktop, restricting file accesses, encrypting data, etc. Of course, the laptop will often be used on a wireless network, but I'd imagine a good software firewall like zonealarm is just as good as the XP Pro features.

Basically, I'm wondering if I could save $80 by just getting XP Home, will I really be missing anything or exposing my system anymore by using Home instead?

I used XP Home on my laptop for two years and I never had any problems.

I was on a college network with it. Wireless, at times.

I upgraded to XP Pro and I really didn't notice any difference.

I doubt this helps you any, though.

I'd imagine the university wireless network is simply a workgroup peer-to-peer network, as is my home network. I also read that FAT32 is the default file system for Home, but I'd imagine there's no problem using NTFS with it though, right?

I also read that Home doesn't have the administrative tools, which I really like in Pro with the disk manager and everything, but it's a laptop so that probably wouldn't get used as much, also is there any difference interface wise and how the GUI looks (in Pro I generally just set everything so it looks like Windows98 anyway, classic Start Menu, etc.).

the lack of NTFS permissions and Domain support are nagging at me right now...but you can survive well with XP Home if those aren't that important to you

We have home on one of our PCs here.

I really haven't noticed any difference with it. My dad went and downloaded some of the administration tools that Home doesn't come default with.
