XWVM Releases First Public Alpha

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Flat & VR support for a fan remake of the god tier 1993 original X-Wing game.
You need the original game files first, available on Steam, GoG and elsewhere.
XWVM navigates the space that lies above the literal port of the original engine to modern hardware, but below the full on remake or reimagination.

XWVM is the recreation of the infrastructure that runs the original missions, campaigns and cutscenes, and 3D models from scratch, (atop of the Unity game engine). As such, you need to own the original game, because XWVM is just an app that contains no gameplay elements or game assets other than some stuff that we had to make to support some new features.

At the same time, XWVM aims to rework, refine, restore, or reimagine some components of the original to make the game more appropriate for contemporary times. We have added new ways to interact with the game, to look at the game, to listen to the game, and to customize the game.

As some of us like to say, XWVM is a facilitator program that allows you to play the original games not as it was, but as we remember it being.

They hope to skirt by Disney by requiring the original files making it like a wrapper (but it probably isn't) and having the HD assets as separate downloads and shit I guess. Better download all versions as they come just in case.

It is indeed a kind of wrapper, and no material from the original game is included in the download itself. All the data, like missions, briefings, 3D models, MIDI music gets loaded from the original game data.

The HD asset download contains only original material, created specifically for XWVM. All 3D models were built from scratch, the digital soundtrack - while based on the original MIDI files - was created from the ground up, making sure the interactivity of the original iMUSE system stayed intact.

this is just amazing - the controller support is great too

I see they are looking to make Tie Fighter compatible too - really looking forward to that since Tie is a much better game
