There have been a couple of posts/threads sharing single previews. I figured to put them all here.
This is the game I'm most looking forward to this year.
This is the game I'm most looking forward to this year.
Protagonist and Setting
- A New Lead: The sequel shifts perspective from Jesse Faden to her brother, Dylan.
- Open Manhattan: Instead of being confined to the brutalist architecture of the Oldest House, the game takes place in a "folded" Manhattan. This version of New York has been physically distorted—Inception-style—by the Hiss escaping into the world.
- The World Map: Remedy has redesigned the map to be much clearer and more intuitive than the first game, dividing Manhattan into visually distinct districts.
Combat and Gameplay Mechanics
- Melee-Driven Combat: Dylan wields a new transforming weapon called the Aberrant that emphasizes close-quarters combat.
- Not a Soulslike: The developers explicitly stated the game is an aggressive, "push-forward" action game rather than a Soulslike. The pace is lightning-fast, compared to titles like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta.
- Action RPG Elements: While it avoids heavy inventory management, it features a Talent system for combat abilities, such as perfect dodges and backstab damage.
- The Gap: Players can customize their build, weapon forms, and finishers in a mental space called "The Gap," similar to the Mind Place in Alan Wake 2.
Narrative and World Building
- New Dialogue System: Inspired by the game Firewatch, the sequel features a more interactive dialogue system where players can choose responses while moving. However, these choices are for character agency and will not lead to multiple endings.
- Supporting Cast: Dylan is aided by Zoe Divera, a new character who communicates through his earpiece. Music is expected to play a huge role in the world-building and the bond between these characters.
- Accessibility: Remedy confirmed that you do not need to have played the original Control or Alan Wake 2 to understand the story or characters.
Other Details
- Engine Upgrades: Developed on Remedy's Northlight engine, the game targets 60 FPS across all platforms and supports a significantly higher number of enemies on screen at once.
- Influences: The creative director cited Neon Genesis Evangelion as a major influence on the game's atmosphere and visual variety.
