Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

I'm enjoying P5 as well, though hearing/reading its localization after the stellar localization on Y0 is a bit rough. Also, walking around I'm constantly wishing I had Y0's first-person view mode so I could look around. But yeah, I'm looking forward to getting back to all the Platinum Adventure content I have left to do.

The two are excellent complimentary experiences.

I'm kinda pissed those disco dance battles are required to fight Amon. Karaoke I can handle ok. Haruka's stuff in 5 went decently as well, and you could grind to make it easier. But this bullshit, ugh. "Easy" doesn't even make it all that much easier since the timing is still brutal. Can't even give up and get a "Done/Failed" checkmark.

This sucks.

Disco can go die in a fire. The button presses in no way line up with the songs, the buttons are LIGHT NEON colored on a light neon background, the closing squares makes it almost impossible to tell which button came first when you have a series of them, and the window for button registration is like 5 frames.

Why is Karaoke so much better than this? Who the hell designed Disco? It can't be the same person.

I absolutely understand your frustration, at first it seemed almost unplayably hard to me. I was missing most notes even on easy difficulty, but i went from complaining about it here to beating the hardest song on the highest difficulty with only two missed notes, and it didn't even take a lot of practice (and others do much, much better than that). All i needed to do was rethink my approach and start listening to the beat/rythm of the songs instead of just hitting the button as soon as the prompt seemingly overlapped with the grid. Each song typically has 2-3 sections in which you repeat a certain pattern over and over, just imagine clapping along to the song and time your button presses according to that. Now it's one of my favorite additions in terms of mini games. :)

Dancing is fun, y'all need to git gud.

That's pretty good, but your step-game is incredibly weak. Go practice.

Oh yeah, believe me i know, but after 170 hours of Y0 at that point i was just going for the last few completion points and wasn't trying to outdo this guy. Doing additional steps between each note messed with my sense of rhythm too much, so i just played it the safest i could to clear the bar. XD

Indeed. He needs to.... step it up.

Shut up, I havent had my coffee yet...

Hehe. :)

Well that guy is just too good. I hate him already.

Just got to chapter 14. How much longer until I'm done with the game? 3h?

hehe, still quite a while.

You got
2 chapters + a finale
remaining.

You'll know when you're close to the absolute end of the story, trust me. My advice is to stock up on healing items when you get near to the end. And there is a post-credits scene too so STICK AROUND.

5h more like, if I'm remembering correctly and there is approx
16-17 chapters in the game
.

Keep in mind the final chapter is incredibly long, it'll take around 2 hours alone to finish the final fights and watch the ending and mid/post credits scenes (so make sure you set aside a decent amount of time before you start it!)

Finally been able to dig into this more over the last week and the real estate game is so addictive.
I'm almost done with it as far as it will let me and I haven't finished chapter 6 yet
. Also I thought accruing CP would be a hassle but it flows pretty consistently if you keep doing a variety of things. Well, at least as far as I am in the game it has been.

Bit of a strange question but I'm about 5 hours in and just at the start of the story really. Do all the mini games and side stuff (not quests per se, just things like karaoke and so on) get introduced to you during the narrative or should I carry on exploring the world as I am?

Only the karaoke i think.

Apart from Karaoke and UFO Catcher, I can't think of any that you play during the main story.

Huh, in the songs I played, the timing of the button presses was literally the beat of the music. Or do you mean something else with "line up with the songs"?

I think it varies a bit from song to song. Koi no Disco Queen is the best when it comes to the input rythm following the song's beat. Also, once you get more used to follow the beat instead of the visuals Hard actually becomes easier, because the lower difficulties tend to skip a lot of the beats with their inputs. Kinda messes up the rythm.

he ain't wrong mothafucker! i played through on hard and i wanted a goddamn trophy for it

Its not hard though, if anything its still a little on the easy side. Chances are if someone is finding the combat that hard then they equipped the Charismatic Autograph without checking the description (i.e. making the enemies go berserk).

I found the telephone club and circuit race substory completion wayyyyy more tiring but yeah as someone who really likes rhythm games, the disco is way better for it's presentation than it's gameplay.

Already really hoping pocket circuit is way less involved in Kiwami's substory completion.

The disco dancing was a very clever idea but the execution could have been a bit tighter.

They had a really fun rhythm game in Yakuza 5 with
Haruks's dancing and singing
and I figured they would've just expanded on that.
someone modded xenoverse and gave gohan kiryu's classic suit.

Someone goes to that trouble but doesn't make the ambient glow from the SSJ blue to resemble heat mode SMH.

well maybe he turns blue when stupid ssj god shit happens.

idk, i don't play xenoverse

Wait you don't know? Lol it's been mentioned so many times in this thread.

It's an item that you get from a substory (the one with the Yankee band I believe) and when equipped, it makes all the enemies considerably more aggressive. They no longer "wait their turn" like an action movie, they all just charge at you at the same time even when you're on the ground. It makes the combat REALLY punishing.

A LOT of people in this thread got the item and equipped it, making the game harder. Most of them didn't even read the description and started complaining about how the game just had a sharp difficulty spike that feels insurmountable.

Because I only have a couple of hours a night after the kids get to bed, its been really hard to not do the main story, but I did a bit of bowling and karaoke last night and it was a ton of fun. Went way past my bedtime by mistake.

I think I'm near the end of Chapter 10 I'm continually amazed at how tight the script is compared to past Yakuzas. I don't recall a single wasted moment in the story so far, and both storylines have been ace.

At the moment I've clocked in 25 hours and I'm estimating around 10-15 hours more for the storyline and I might invest another 10 hours on fooling around. There's still so much more to do, ive haven't touched many of the mini games or sub stories for that matter... to do it all would be upwards of 100 hours, which I don't really have. :( I still plan on getting to Nioh and Zelda (and Persona 5, Horizon, Nier).

What a game though.... even if the rest of the game is just average, this has been easily the best Yakuza game yet. Will pre order Kiwami as soon as I'm done with this.

I don't know, I found the bosses pretty hard on Hard. I definitely wouldn't characterize Hard as "on the easy side".

As someone for whom Yakuza 0 was their first Yakuza, that's worried me a bit about Kiwami. It's hard to imagine that a PS2-era game would have the same level of writing as Zero does. But I've preordered it anyway because I know it'll still be worth the money even if it doesn't live up to Zero's greatness.

If this is your first yakuza then definitely Hard is going to be a bit of a challenge.

But if you've played previous games in the series and you have a solid "feel" for the combat then even bosses aren't that difficult.

I often put arbitrary restrictions on myself to try (Use only rush mode, take no damage, etc etc) and make the combat easier and I was playing it on Hard for the first time. But that's because I've played every mainline Yakuza so I have a lot of experience with the combat in this series.

Yeah, maybe for newcomers I can see the game hard, but I've found the series dived in difficulty after Yakuza 3 and its taken until Yakuza 6 to really get back to the point where I'd classify the game as hard again (even boss fights). Especially if your leveling up your fighting styles as you go, as you get so many counters with both characters that it really helps take the bite out of bosses in this game, well bar Majima's fight against
Sera
who I found somewhat tough.

Hard is pathetically easy in the beginning, but there finally is a real difficulty curve as the game goes on. Previous games gradually became easier, so I was very perplexed when 0 basically played it itself on hard early on. I still only died once or twice towards the end, but it at least felt like my upgrades and levels were worth it. The fight club is crazy (weird) though. It randomly jumps between super easy and 'as hard as the final boss' from the third or fourth tournament on.

Finished the game last night and absolutely loved it. Really glad I came back to this series and gave it another chance, it's seriously amazing. Really looking forward to Kiwami, but part of me doesn't want to wait till August to play more, lol. I got Yakuza 4 and 5 the other day and I'm waiting for 3 to turn up any day now. I'll probably wait for Kiwami to come out despite really wanting to play the others, but I'm probably going to mess around in premium adventure mode for a while.

I've just finished chapter 2, very much enjoying this game. Regarding the side stories, can I take these at my own pace? I found some during chapter 2 but no idea if I did all that were available, so will they still be available? Are there any that are especially useful, like give a really good reward, that I should do early?

Sidequests stay active until you're done with them. There's even a mode called Premium Adventure after you've finished the main story, were you can finish all the stuff you didn't do during the main campaign.

There's nothing missable in the game save for a few trophies, but to platinum the game you have to beat it twice anyway (Legend difficulty only unlocks after you've beaten the game once.) so that's not much of an issue either.

One of the most useful quest rewards is the Encounter Finder, but I don't think the corresponding quest is available yet and either way, to trigger it you need to have two other specific quests finished, so don't worry about it. Just keep in mind, whenever you're asked "Black or white?" always choose black.

It's not so much the item rewards of the quests that you should look forward to but rather, a lot of the people you're helping in quests will come back at a later point to support you. You'll see what that means eventually.

Kiwami's rating description (will censor the spoilers)

This is an open-world action game in which players assume the role of a Japanese gangster (Kiryu) searching for answers after
being released from prison
. As players explore parts of Tokyo, they engage in missions that can involve gang rivalries or fights with thugs. Characters engage in fistfights that involve weapons and scripted special moves (e.g., bashing heads into walls, shoving nails into enemies' faces, slamming heads with car doors). Some scenes allow players to engage in gun fights using machine guns and grenades. Combat is accompanied by gunfire, screams of pain, and large blood-splatter effects. Some cutscenes also depict intense acts of violence: a bound man tortured with razorblades and spikes; a gangster's fingers sliced by a boss; a character shot in the face. Some missions allow players to become more intimate with female characters; as these relationships escalate, players can earn video clips of real women posing in lingerie, swimsuits, or partially nude in bathtubs (e.g., characters' nipples/genitalia barely covered by soap bubbles). During the course of the game, players can order and drink whiskey at bars/restaurants—a status icon indicates drunkenness; consuming alcoholic beverages provides minor bonuses in combat. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” appear in the dialogue

Yeah, its been like that since 5 I think. I know Ishin's difficulty in the arena was all over the damn place. Some of the later fights were brutally difficult, its times like that I was thankful for the ability to change the difficulty on the fly, I really needed it for that (and the bloody battle dungeon).

I'm done Chapter 4 so far an ready ta say this games going on the lower end of my Yakuza ranking chart! Between being a prequel, the whole Styles thing, having to turn around an go outta your way to avoid the roaming mini-boss, substories not being marked on the map, and escort battles I'm just not feeling it. Still gonna keep at it cause I'm having fun, just less fun then say 1 through 4.

the whole Styles thing

Yeah, I too hate this great new addition.

having to turn around an go outta your way to avoid the roaming mini-boss

Just run past him, lol. You have to actively bump into him and wait a couple of seconds to trigger a fight, i.e. it only happens when you're actually looking to fight him.

Lindsay, you're being very silly today and I cannot condone this.

Forgot ta mention the loads of "jank" the games got. But at the very least they finally got rid of the whole slowly bend over to pick up locker keys/phone card animation!

Yeah, I too hate this great new addition.
Trying ta learn/remember 6 seperate movesets instead of say... 1 kinda sucks. I can only be thankful they didn't "color code" baddies to be resistant to specific styles!

So its like random drunkards an other peeps ya bump into to start fights with? Figured the rules were different with the shakedown crew being that they're super menacing an having a story behind 'em as opposed to the random peeps. I'll have to be brave an give it a try!

Lindsay, you're being very silly today and I cannot condone this.
Wha? I've made a whole 2 posts today neither of which were silly imo.
