Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Charlouie's our resident JAV expert, you can ask him anything. Observe:

Charlouie, which JAV label is your favourite?

Can't say, it really depends on the actress, genre and series more than anything.

I guess looking over my collection I've got a lot of Moodyz releases, but that's probably because their style, direction and content is all over the place more than anything.

I haven't played XIV yet I probably should my avatar is actually a fan render from the KOF14 models. I have heard generally positive things about KOF14, what initially put me off and kept me off it at launch was the 3D graphics. I am starting to warm up to it a bit though.

From what I've seen it seems like the reception is less mixed than with Tekken 7 and SFV at least. I've seen some weird looking models but for the most part what I've seen looked alright.

JAV is like a monkey's paw situation for me.

It caters to the largest variety of fetishes I've ever seen. Doesn't matter what you're into, you can find JAV of it.

But the Japanese elements of it all (the squeaking, the rapiness and the censorship) really ruin a lot of it :(

The graphics patch really helped things. The game still isn't on the level of SFV or Tekken 7 in terms of visuals but it's got a massive fucking roster, is well balanced and very fun to play if you enjoy KoF. They've stayed true to what makes the franchise great. Plus it has Vanessa, the greatest female character in a 2D fighting game and she's a MILF so who doesn't love that.

Be warned that the online isn't so amazing. The matchmaking can be wonky so unless you know people who play the game and can play with them online, finding people online might be a challenge. EDIT: But you mentioned online isn't even an issue here so oh well. Make sure to get all the DLC characters for KoF XIV.

And while I get that SFV isn't really a good game for offline play/clowning around, I would like to offer three alternatives.

Tekken 7 (which you seem to be discrediting for some reason), Dead or Alive 5 and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

The thing about Tekken 7 is that it is actually surprisingly good if it's just people clowning around offline, picking the characters they think look coolest and doing shit. It's really straightforward, the game looks great and the gameplay is REALLY fun with a lot of characters. Definitely worth it for offline "casual play".

DoA5 is another one. Has similar characteristics with T7 in that it's great for offline play. There's even a F2P version you can download to check it out in case you're on the fence. Game also has a ton of customization options since you clearly don't mind female sexuality. Also has male options as well, and a very well rounded cast with a surprising amount of depth and personality to them.

Lastly, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is a REALLY great game. It looks F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C and plays very well. It might be tough to learn but if you just enable the "easy execution" mode (or whatever it's called) and just pick characters you can really have fun. The game is anime so it has a ton of movement options and the characters all have a TON of personality.

You can't go wrong with any of thous four options. Btw stop calling it a beat em'up, you Euro. It's "fighting game".

I don't really mind the censorship, it's been very lenient for the past few years. Only this year did the mosaic get worse again, before then it really didn't hide anything. It does affect how the movies and the action are shot though, and there's a lot more body contact in general to compensate, whereas in american porn it's sometimes like there's a strict "Only your genitals may touch!" rule in place. Bit of an exaggeration of course. Uncensored japanese porn in contrast is just really boring to watch.

And for all the rape stuff it's the abundance of femdom or at least generally sexually aggressive woman that got me into JAV. There's tons of that around. "Reverse Rape" is it's own genre and there's really not much of that in western porn, except some of the more amateur stuff but those lack in production values.

Also fun fact: I'm not really into all the rape porn, with the exception of Ai Uehara. She really manages to sell that part, despite being the worst actress in this game. Still prefer her in dominant roles.

What I've heard about Tekken 7 wasn't all negative but still very mixed. And I hear the PS4 version isn't great.

I did actually play DoA4 back on XBox360, it was the only game in the series I've played. I mostly remember Aerosmith and a T-Rex. DoA5 was on my list because I did have fun with 4, but the amount of DLC and different bundles kinda push me away. I don't really care about outfits, but then there's tons of stage and character DLCs and whatnot. It's all very overwhelming. KoFXIV in comparison has one character bundle DLC and that's it. (Well and various outfits, but like I said, don't care enough about those to pay.)

Yeah, I get that. It's just that the stuff I like generally tends to have all the pitfalls of JAV so it can be a bit annoying. Good role switch Javs are dope though, I'm not gonna lie.

It was mixed because it has a frame higher input lag than the PC version (Basically, when you press a button it takes one more frame for the game to "interpret" it and perform the command). I doubt it's even gonna be noticeable if you're a "newbie". Also the online is generally worse than and has a lot more loading screens than the PC versions, both issues that you won't deal with if you play offline.

As for DoA5, just buy the 40$ version that has (almost) all the characters. Mai from KoF and Naotora Li from Dynasty Warriors are the only ones you don't get. I think only one Attack on Titan-themed stage is DLC, otherwise the only things you can buy are costumes and characters. There's a fuck tonne of costumes but if you don't want to bother with all that stuff, you don't have to. Just press L1+R1+L2+R2 at the options menu to unlock all the unlockable stuff which gives you some decent variety for every character.

I've seen a ton of character DLCs for DOA5, which is why I was confused. I suppose they're only needed if you get the free version?

So which one would you say is the overall better game? KOFXIV or DOA5?

That's a really tough question and ultimately comes down to the tastes of the person you ask.

Personally, I'd suggest you go for KoF.

I second KOF as well. Love XIV just for the roster and music alone. Geese rocks, Geese theme rocks, AOF2 Geese theme rocks! Then again I've been a fan of the series for a while and like what they did with this game, its not the prettiest fighter on the market, but it feels so good to play.

I finally unlocked the Dragon of Dojima style. I was wondering how to unlock the gate, then I read on gamefaqs that I need CP to unlock the gate. And I spent all my CP. Can I carry the abilities on hard mode at least?

What a fucking beautiful ride that was...
I was quite worried that I could be bored for the Legend playthrough but turns out it was actually a lot of fun.
My times:
- 102 hours for the 100% completion
- 9 hours for Legend

I'm going to play some other stuff before going into Kiwami.

Nicely done :) I can't quite understand how it took me 130 hours to do my 100% run. I swear that's 10 hours more than it took me on my Japanese run, and this time I had the benefit of actually knowing what to do on several mini games, and I felt I managed to clear the Club Czar and Real Estate stuff much quicker. I blame Outrun, I spent hours on chapter 2 playing that damn sweet game! And Mahjong...

Thanks :)

Well I used guide for stuff like weapons/parts/cards trophies and for some substories so it went really fast. The only thing that took me a lot of time is the mahjong since I didn't know how to play the game. The rest was really fast.
Also I rushed trough most of the hostess training because for me there were all inferior to Yuki and I didn't really liked them :/ Yuki's training and substory were amazing.

By the way, do you think Yakuza 5's completion is harder than 0? I remember I gave up on the 100% because of the arena (it requires a looooot of time) but I'm thinking of going back before 6 comes out.

5 is I guess harder than 0, since I felt a couple of its requirements were harder than most of what 0 threw at you. But its really just down to how good you are at the mini games on offer.

The arena is a time sink in 5 though. Having to do it 4 times was a pain and a grind but its doable. Only bit I found difficult was Akiyama as his moveset didn't really work against these higher powered enemies. Otherwise its ok, its just long as it has tons of content to the game. Still the most fun 100% in the series for me though, with Ishin probably being the least fun only because of the darn grinding requirements for the CP list and weapons upgrades (the game itself is absolutely amazing).

Alright, I think I'll aim for the 100% in Yakuza 5 then.

I'd like to try Ishin by the way, but my japanese knowledge is limited to the kana and very few kanji. I don't think I'll be able to understand what's going on around me :/ I know there are a fex guides out there to help you understand the story but I'm still on the fence

The KHH Subs PDF guide is fantastic. Got me through the game, I definitely recommend it, as I've said many times I personally think its got one of the strongest end games in the entire series. Definitely got the best end boss theme in the entire series.

About to finish this game and my god... i played a LOT of games in my life but i dont remember a game that got me so engrossed into its story. What a masterpiece... I can't wait to fire up kiwami right after i am done with the last chapter!

Officially a new fan of the franchise thanks to GAF.

Ohio gozaimasu, Yakuza-gaf!

Yes, I'm new to this series, just started (6h in) with Yakuza Zero, got it this week as kind of a self birthday gift.

I've been through the Yakuza Series Starter Guide (tm) thread but there's one thing I didn't get. Should I play on hard or on normal?

I get beat but nothing serious, in the streets, then I just go have something to eat and it's alright (except if I find shakedown man, fuck shakedown man). In the story though, the first real boss fight kicked my ass hard because he had SO MUCH health and I didn't. :(

I'm playing hard btw and I think I can change it whenever, right? Does it affect anything? Are there difficulty trophies, too?

Aside from that, it's my first Yakuza game, and if I really enjoy it I'd get at least Kiwami (and 2, believe). At least Kiwami released at 30€ and this one has been 25€ to me, so far so good.

Any advice? I normally play hard but not hardest difficulty in action games, and somehow managed to platinum Bloodborne.

I don't usually play RPG (jrpg even less) to completion, should I bother with most of the content here?

Is there a trick to playing darts? Lol it seems so random sometimes (tried two player mini gaming via main menu).

I hope there's room here to be asking stupid questions every now and then! :p

Honestly, there's barely any difference between normal and hard. The only really noticable difference is that you won't find health items in stages on Hard, which doesn't matter because you have more than enough money to fill your entire inventory with better health items than you'd find lying around.

Which is another thing...you can go into your inventory and use health items whenever you want during battle, so any possible struggle during battles can easily be overcome.

You should bother with the sidequests because most of them are hilarious. A lot of those are also triggered by doing the various minigames, so there's an incentive to do those as well.

Nice, thank you. The thing is, I believe I didn't have access to any shop before that boss (or until chapter 2) but I may have done it wrong. Anyway I didn't expect that, and it's the only place I've died so far (well the whole mission but specially the boss). Now I carry some health items, just hope they're enough for the next stage.

Sidequests and such don't open up before chapter 2 but you can enter shops in chapter 1 once the map opens up.

All you really need is an inventory full of Stamina Royal. You get those from the pharmacy.

Adryuu

Member
Ok, I'll get Royals when I finish my inventory. About that, is everything safe to sell? Well not the crap, but those platinum/whatever things that people give me when I beat the shit out of some random suckers.

Also some guy near the shrine gave me a diamond one that sells for ten million I think in the pawn shop, should I just sell that?

He gave me clothes too, but the game said I can only use them in what I understood was new game plus so... Bummer.

Thanks!

All of the "plates" are for selling, they don't actually give you any boost or anything.

And the clothes were probably different outfits. You can use them in NG+ or in Premium Adventure mode which is a mode unlocked after you finish the main story. You're basically left in the city with no restrictions and can finish any side stuff you may have missed or just engage in a fun side activity.

Oh right so there is a post game kind of thing to finish up everything left. Cool, that was another question that was eventually going to come up.

Here's a post I often share for newcomers:
  • Remember that there is no autosave. You have to save at a phone in your home base, or on the streets.
  • Just play at your own pace. The game is fairly slow but starts to open up by chapter 2 so you can just follow the main story, or do substories at your own pace it's up to you.
  • Substories aren't marked on the main map, but you CAN obtain an item later on for both characters that reveals the start location for them.
  • The game allows you to finish every single side activity before the ending of the game, as well as AFTER finishing the story so don't worry about that.
And finally:

When is that thing about autobiography selected? Never saw that, I think. 9h in, just started chapter 3. Intro for the chapter is really boss, heh.

Also, do I get to choose which character I control later, or is it strictly tied to the story's progress? I mean before I finish the story, I guess post game let's you switch it up.

You can only switch freely post game. And the autobiography makes the mobs aggro you more often. It's a real hassle, lol.

It's an item you get from a substory. A L-O-T of people in this thread who had Y0 as their first Yakuza game didn't know what the "charistmatic" items did. They basically increase the combat difficulty with the autobiography making it so that enemies don't "take turns" and all charge at you constantly, even when you're on the ground.

Which character you use is all story based right before the "final mission" where you can freely switch between characters and of course once you've finished the story.

This is my first time ever playing a Yakuza game. I actually pre-ordered Yakuza Kiwami (at a good discount) but waited for 0 to go on sale before getting into the series.

And holy shit. What an amazing experience so far. I just sat through a 10+ minute cut scene (start of chapter 3 introducing Majima) and it was one of the best things I've experienced in a video game in years. So far, Yakuza 0 has near-perfect presentation and style.

That's exactly the point where I stopped last night. Yeah that cutscene is really good. The pacing is still slow though for a lot of videogames, this series seem to have its own pacing.

Speaking of Goro, is it normal to already prefer him to Kiryu? Haven't even controlled him further than saving the game, lol. Kiryu is more like 'hey I'm a thug but a good boy thug' while Goro seems to be much more complicated than that. And (even) more boss. Not that Kiryu is a bad character in any way though. Just plain and simple stomp everything kind of good but (ex)thug guy, if that makes sense. 😆

Oh about one side quest, I feel like I fucked it up even though I did everything right:
the one side story where two tv guys are missing a producer for some program inside a restaurant. I don't know if I did 'right' the first option (greeting the director, I was serous), but then the tv specific jargon, I got it all correct. So after I finished and everyone was happy (except for those who got their faces smashed on cars and walls) I got the feeling that maybe if I had punched the food prop instead of placing it I'd have had much more fun. I kind of regret not doing it bad on purpose, lol.

Regardless of what options you choose, you can't fail a substory as long as you see it through to the end. It'll still come up as "cleared" and it still fills the progression requirements and stuff.

Yeah, you can't fail substories, at the end everything always gets resolved somehow. You *do* get better item rewards for picking the "right" options, but they are rarely worth the trade-off of having to pick the straight answers. (Though in some cases the correct answers still bring the funniest results, like the subquest with the punk band.)

Most subquest item rewards can also be gained elsewhere...really, the only thing you have to keep in mind...when you get to choose between black or white, always go black.

I prefered Majima and his side of the story as well, though I feel Kiryu is the better substory character because he's so serious and straight-faced about everything it just cracks me up.

Adryuu

Member
Well I supposed you can't get the substories to a fail state, so I was referring more to the fun side of things. I mean, choosing the
punch the dishes
option would have been hilarious probably.

Indeed, I'll stick to the "black" then, or whatever seems funnier.

In case anyone's curious, here's the substory I was talking about (The Show Must Go On) with some of the most ridiculous choices:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW_W7foQAM4

The player's quite bad at combat. :p

Does anyone know of a decent guide for the Sidestories?

I'm trying to get the ones I've missed now that I'm at the point of no return, but every guide I've found is complete shit to follow. The guides number the sidestories, which the game itself does, but the sidestory completion list doesn't number them, you only get a number popping up briefly on screen while doing it. Plus unfound/uncompleted ones aren't numbered. This wouldn't be a problem in itself, but no guide seems to list sidestories in the same order that the game does (ie numerically), instead numbering them in some arbitrary order and then sorting them by chapter.

So I was watching this Korean movie called The Age of Shadows that's about the Korean resistance during the Japanese occupation and holy shit look who showed up:

The moment he popped on screen I was like, "fuck me is that sagawa?! It is holy shit!" looked on wiki and yup! Crazy how accurate his face model is in this game. They even nailed the eyebrow thing, which I thought was just a quirk of the character but nope he does that shit in real life too.

Man, listening through this, the game really hid it's most 80s sounding tracks away as low-quality background noise in shops and during minigames which is kind of a shame.

Oh, and:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvQ4BI-1SAo

It's a low-quality version of the bug arcade game song from Kiwami. I thought that was a new song but appearently not.

Edit: A slightly different version:

Damn, 3 and 4 totally should have been dance songs. 4 is straight fire. I can't believe they just hid away this stuff as background noise.

Speaking of music tracks, I'm back in Zero to finish up stuff and although I'm not really fond of the pocket racer missions, that song they play is really ace. Feels like something straight out of Out Run. Also, anyone know what the jazz song they play in the Vincent bar is? Something they wrote, or a song they licensed?

So what's the next step now that I've beat 0 and almost done with Kiwami? Yakuza 6 is next, and then Kiwami 2. Safe to buy and play 3 4 5 instead of waiting for Kiwami 2 and then taking it from there?

Yeah just play 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 -> Kiwami 2.

Kiwami 2 is pretty heavily standalone, you're not missing out on any real story beats that carry forward to the next games.
