the entire surface of my face has become a single, finely sensitive membrane that registers so much as the brush of a stray lock of hair as unbearably acute itching. it's particularly unpleasant around the bridges of my nose. my eyes are jellied. i've been sneezing these convulsive sneezes that seem to use every available orifice and not just my nostrils. if i find a poo streak in my shorts, i'm going to kill myself.

you know what does it, though.

pollen.

Hah, sorry to hear that-- wait, why am I saying "hah"? Schadenfreude, I suppose. ;) :D Nah, your descriptions-- particularly the "multi-orifice sneeze"-- made me chuckle, is all. :)

That sucks, though. I was severely allergic as a child (though it generally didn't manifest itself as dermatitis, like you're experiencing); coupled with chronic asthma from age 3-9 (I still had bouts with it up until age 12, but it wasn't nearly as severe), it was a real bitch. I was in the hospital nearly every weekend for a few years, and the asthma attacks were usually triggered by my allergies, which, at the time, were incredibly sensitive. I went for a battery of shots each week, then eventually biweekly, and by the time I was 13 years old, I was going for them only once every 4-6 months.

I was fortunate enough to outgrow both my asthma and my allergies, by and large (and if you knew how sickly I was as a child, you'd never believe that it was possible); I still sneeze a bit around cats, but even then only sometimes, and only if I'm around them more than a few hours. Amazingly, my strongest allergies, which were to dust, pollen, and ragweed, don't bother me at all anymore, unless I'm in an exceptionally dusty area; the other two have no effect at all.

The point of all this (besides me killing some time :p) is that shots work. They may take several years, especially considering the virulent reactions you're having, but they work. You should speak to an allergist if it's at all possible. It may be a bit pricey if you don't have insurance, but you might only need one or two shots every 2 weeks or a month, which you may be able to swing-- at the very least, go get a consultation to figure out what treatment would entail. Short of that, you might want to try something like Claritin (which is OTC last I heard). My sister developed pretty strong allergies to pollen and ragweed as she got older (heh, maybe I just transferred mine to her :D), and says that as long as she takes Claritin semi-regularly during the worst part of the season, she's fine.

Best of luck-- allergies suck. : / Luckily, I don't have to deal with them anymore

i was exaggerating for comic/cathartic effect. i usually get allergies this time of year, but they're nothing otc medications can't handle. last year i had this nasal spray that felt vaguely like the aftereffect of cocaine but cleared the allergies up admirably. i'll have to get another bottle.
