Year of the DS

DS has a makings of a monster when Online hits full force next year :)

so much DS love on GAF... this thread needs Drinky Crow, when is his ban over?

He's unbanned in a month, I guess.

Yeah, Mario Kart is looking pretty damn good (for the DS). I take it back, it has acceptable 3D.

Well, it's all opinion obviously and these don't "stand out" as much, but here are a few that interest me...

Burnout Legends
Stand Alone Complex
Infected
Coded Arms
Medievil
Daxter
Metal Gear Acid 2
Guilty Gear (the SoR style game)
Virtua Tennis
Death Jr.
Ys VI
Lemmings (from Team 17)
Pursuit Force
WRC
Crisis Core
Sonic PSP (well, this wasn't shown...)
PoPoLoCrois
Monster Hunter P

Then, there are a number of Japanese games that weren't even shown at E3. Once again, those aren't necessarily going to interest everyone and they certainly don't carry any big names, but they all look pretty awesome.

On the DS side, there are a lot of great games that will be released that I just don't have interest in.

So, I can understand why people might not have interest in a number of those PSP titles, but I think it's unfair to suggest it has nothing.

That sums up how I feel, too.

The DS looks a lot better now than it did a week ago, but personally speaking, I can't get excited about the vast majority of the DS games. There's a few that look good--Castlevania, Nanostray, maybe the new Viewtiful Joe game...but then it thins out from there. It's clear that some people feel the same way about the PSP games--I am really looking forward to Daxter, Burnout Legends, and Lemmings, but other people think they're junk. That's fine with me, everyone has their opinions. As the old saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure," and that's certainly applicable here.

But, for some people to somhow give the impression that the DS is enjoying some massive advantage in game support over PSP is just plain false. Judging by what the major video game Web sites covered at E3, both systems seem to be getting a roughly equal amount of support from developers. It's just a matter of opinion as to which game lineup you prefer. For me, the PSP wins handily.

Death Jr was the first PSP game (demo) ever shown what the hell, why is it not out yet?

Not that I give a shit about it... I want TALKMAN and a white PSP

It's already out, but you can add Star Wars Episode 3 for DS to the list of great games this year. It's an old-skool style beat em up (Like TMNT2 for NES) with a few spaceship battles thrown in (and despite the fact that those levels graphics aren't great on the box, theyre ok in motion, and the battles are really fun.)

yeah but maybe you could pull a release list for those PSP games, because we where clearly talking about "year of the DS" here that we meant the DS looks better than PSP in 2005. I have no doubts that PSP will look much better next year.

maybe, maybe not ;) You can't forsee how much more support DS will pull in with...

JSS
FFIII
+ more

^_^ If its big in japan (and it is), the dev support will flock. The ease of development + good games sales will help attract more games imo. Everyone's also forgettng GBA Micro and how that will bring 3rd party back to GBA (which will also benefit DS)

Go to GameSpot's E3 Games page, then go to the drop-down box to filter by platform, and select PSP. Count the number of games. Then filter again for DS, and count the number of games. You'll find that GameSpot lists 73 games for both platforms--the exact same number.

Both systems do have a few duplicate entries, and I haven't tried filtering those out. But just giving a cursory look down the list, I can't imagine that the difference would be great enough to tip the scales heavily into one system's favor.

Dude the exact same number is not a victory for a monster like the PSP that should be destroying the DS in terms of Sales and 3rd Party support.

PSP got completely overshadowed by Sony's next gen hype
I think it is fair to call it the Year of the DS

I still want my TALKMAN sony bitches

harsh on psp? most people in this DS thread were interested in DS til you came in with your post to show how DS HAD NO GAMES COMING. Um Damage Control?! More like you can't handle the comment that 2005 = year of the DS.
Yeah, I thought the same. That was pretty blatant. Though I agree with him that the PSP still has a strong lineup coming, and they are, overall, comparable. But maybe just be a little less aggressive in threads like these since people have been trashing the DS constantly since its launch (a little excessively, imo) and now downplaying everything when it seems to be picking up speed is pretty pathetic.

Anyway, that's a strong lineup. October and November are particularly good. But where is New Super Mario Bros (change the name already)? And I suppose it makes sense that Metroid Dread is a 2006 title since we haven't seen anything, but I'm still disappointed.

I'm curious, what kind of game is Metroid: Hunters? Is it an adventure in the same vein as Prime 1 and 2?

E3 has completely restored my faith in DS. Even though most of these games were announced prior to E3, there wasn't really much talk about them. Now I'm looking foward to the DS '04 lineup more than any other console.

June
13 -- Kirby Canvas Curse
21 -- Bomberman DS
27 -- Meteos

October
03 -- VIEWTIFUL JOE DS
03 -- CASTLEVANIA DS
09 -- Advance Wars

November
07 -- Mario Kart DS **
14 -- Bust-a-Move DS
15 -- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga 2 DS

November is downright ridiculous. If they actually manage to release all of those titles in such a short period of time, there are going to be massive system shortages.

See, here's my problem. I enjoy my SP very much, but I admittedly don't play it that often, nor do I own many games for it. It just seems like I can't justify spending the $40 Canadian on the games.

My problem is that while there are those 6 games up there that I would really enjoy having, I'm not sure I'd want to shell out $40-$50 to do so. Since I'll have access to wireless internet at both home and school, I think that online Mario Kart and Animal Crossing will likely be what sends me over the edge. At the same time, there are games releasing now (Such as Kirby) that I'd like to pick up, and I'm currently in a very good financial situation where I could spend the outrageous $200 for the system.

The DS had a very good E3 from the perspective of highlighting the system. Nintendo revealed Online titles, strong first-party titles and a general internal focus on developing good software for the system. None of the other systems got all of this; PSP lacked the focus from Sony, even if the software was there and the current generation systems all were pushed aside for next generation stuff, which was itself incomplete and full of nothingness. The DS was the only system that not only had good software, but that's message was well presented and seemed like it had the complete package. And "seemed" is the best way to put it, I think.

Hoping for a Fall Price Drop to coincide with the online titles...if I break before then, I will have let money get to my head.

wow, you think they got a couple november placeholder dates in there?

YES.

There is no way in hell all of those games are coming out this year. Still, the big ones probably will. Some might even get bumped up--people gotta remember that developing on a low-tech handheld like the DS is a lot more flexible than working on all these new-fangled consoles.

Kirby Canvas Curse
Mario Kart DS
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga 2 DS
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney DS
Sonic Rush DS
Trace Memory
Animal Crossing

Those are the ones that have my interest or I might buy. M&L2 is pushing it though since I found the original to be the worst of the Mario RPGs. If Golden Sun and Shenmue could redeem themselves, this can, though.

AC ONLY for the Tree-Chopping Mafia factor.

Also, I think that there's a big chance that this online thing will be a pretty small push followed by the pull of that feature.

For me, I know I want:
Kirby: Canvas Curse

15 -- Trauma Center: Under the Knife DS
21 -- Animal Crossing **

:o :o

If I listed the games I'm interested in the it'd look pretty much like everyone else's lists, but I've gotta say that for some reason I'm most excited about the attorney game and the surgery game. If November is a placeholder date for those, I hope they move up rather than get pushed back. I'm concerned though by the lack of date and media for FF:CC. Wasn't that supposed to be one of the online games this year?

so ds got some good games..psp is doomed.yeah
last time i checked psp got a excellent list of games including a gta

Did Egg Monster Heroes get cancelled or something? I dont see it on any release lists anymore (EB & Gamestop)

All of that, and only two games are online? Meh.

There's more. That's just the online titles Nintendo has. For example, Ultimate Card Games and Ultimate Brain Games have online support as well. I think Tony Hawk' American Wasteland is releasing around the same time as well. Pretty good online start I'd say.

Kojima megaton???

GS: Speaking of Boktai, how do you see the series evolving to fit either the DS or PSP?

HK: We are not thinking about PSP actually, but for DS, yes we already have this in the plan, and we have surprises that you can never imagine. And I can't tell you right now what the surprise is, but we do have a big trick up our sleeve, and you are sure to be surprised.

GS: Will we be surprised at TGS then?

HK: Probably so.

If it doesn't utilize the 2nd screen, the game must suck.

It's stupid shit like this that pisses me off. Why does a game for the DS have to use the second screen? Just cuz it's there? Shit logic.

Do I have to be nice to you because you're a mod, or can I openly point out what a moronic statement that was?

When you're just walking around, you see stuff in the sky (top screen) you need to shoot down or follow (like the balloons in the original). But the minute you want to write out a letter, or talk to online visitors, or manage your inventory, or draw a texture, hell, I bet even the music composition's easier now!

FFS, Animal Crossing is _the_ justification of the second screen.

Then you must be having fun degrading yourself for the sole purpose of poking fun at these 'suckers.' I'm sure they'll care when they're having fun playing games they enjoy.

I havent really been keeping up with the news,

Whatever happened to 'Band Brothers', that music game for the DS; is it not seeing a release in the states?

Guarenteed purchases:

Kirby
Meteos
Trace Memory
Nanostray
Mario Kart
Advance Wars 3
Castlevania
Viewtiful Joe
Mario and Luigi

Wait-and-see:

Lost in Blue
Nintendogs
Bomberman (online please)
Phoenix Wright
Trauma Center
Lunar Genesis

Import:

Shonen Jump Super Stars
Glad E3 sucked for PSP, means I can wait until it gets a price drop next year to get one.

Wow, just thought of something...a new 2-D Mario Platformer and a new 2-D Sonic Platformer on ONE system...sign me the hell up!

OK, nice list, but where's the often-promised innovation?

I thought E3 was supposed to justify this two screens/touch screen shit.

Trauma Center

VJ:DS

and for GC farking Odama

Looks like a good year for the DS. The only quirky titles seem to be coming to the system. Animal Crossing, Elektroplankton, and Nintendogs will be mine. ... As soon as Nintnedo releases the pearl DS. I don't want the blue or silver one. The all-white one will be mine.

holy shit ouch my wallet. was Awars online? what about hunters? surely they both have online.

Can anyone who was at e3 explain how the game matching worked for mario? Apparently they played online at e3.

My default rant - No AW isn't online and it's the dumbest thing ever.

I wish there were some more n64 ports.
