Carsey Werner has produced many of the most popular, classic sitcoms of all time, and 3rd Rock from the Sun is among them, joining the ranks of Roseanne, The Cosby Show, A Different World, That '70s Show, Grace Under Fire and Grounded For Life. Just a year ago at this time it was noticable that none of the shows they produced had made it to DVD yet, but that's been changing in recent months. They have worked out distribution deals with different studios on a title-by-title basis.
But for 3rd Rock, they decided it was in their best interest to team up with Anchor Bay Entertainment, which has a lengthy history of TV-DVDs including Three's Company, Sledge Hammer, Xena, Hercules, Highlander, Crime Story, and distributing the Cannell Productions line: 21 Jump Street, The Commish, Greatest American Hero, Renegade, and Silk Stalkings. They've even been trusted by Fox to handle the upcoming Doogie Howser releases, so Carsey Werner turned to them for production of 3rd Rock from the Sun - Season 1.
Giant e-tailer Amazon.com shows that the first season set will arrive on July 26, as a 6-DVD set that will cost $39.98 SRP (Amazon discounts it to $27.99 if you pre-order now). No further details were available yet, but a press release promises that this will be "packed with bonus materials". Here's more from that press release about the show:
The critically-acclaimed series, 3rd Rock From the Sun, debuted in 1993 starring John Lithgow ("The World According to Garp," "Terms of Endearment") as High Commander/Professor Dick Solomon. The show focused on four aliens who arrive on Planet Earth to study its customs and learn about its population. In order to blend in, the four become humans with all the emotions and physical needs but without any understanding of these feelings. Everyday events become highly unusual, side-splitting situations. Co-stars include Jane Curtin ("Saturday Night Live," "Kate & Allie") as Professor Mary Margaret Albright, Kristen Johnston ("Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "Strangers with Candy") as Security Officer/Sally Solomon, French Stewart ("Love Stinks," "Inspector Gadget 2") as Communicator Harry Solomon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("10 Things I Hate About You," "Treasure Planet") as Information Officer Tommy Solomon. Additional cast included Wayne Knight ("Seinfeld") as Police Officer Donald Leslie Orville. Lithgow won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series as well as a Golden Globe.
