Too bad it's in Play. Yes, perhaps the greatest triangle-hater of all time now has a gig as the Japan correspondant for Halverson's mag. They even mention blue shadows in Nick's bio.

The Japan section's not bad - it reads like a strategy guide for buying games in Akihabara or something. No word on whether anybody in Japan has challenged him to a kanji showdown, or what his feelings are on Ken Kutaragi's anouncement that PS3 will be capable of displaying 120 fps ("lies! I only count 119!"), but he does manage to namedrop both Hi-Saturn Navi and Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, which means he's managed to out-hardcore every issue of Game Informer put together in a single paragraph.

His writing's alot more restrained these days though, if this first article is any indication. I think somebody needs to go and piss him off before the next issue; anybody in a position to completely mangle the FFXII translation with feeble Paris Hilton jokes?

*From TNL*

Welcome back Mr Rox!

I'll make a few calls.

I didn't know anyone even visited The Next Level anymore. That new guy who took over -- Nick, I think -- fucking tanked the sumbitch. I hear most of their team went over to Got Next.

Anyway, it's cool to see Nick Rox back in the picture. It definitely gives Play an air of nostalgia... Now, if only they could get Ryan Lockhart too (or have they already?).

Oh man you said it. Ryan is really cool. But who I REALLY wanna see is Casey Loe(aka Takuhi). That guy is really a talented writer as well.

Wait a minute...are you saying this "Got Next" place is where most of the members from TNL are now posting? Including MZO? Link please?

I don't know about their message boards, but I know the editorial part of Got Next is pretty much all the heavy hitters from the old The Next Level team. Their URL is Got-Next.com.

I saw this in the mag too. Totally forgot about it until now. I always forget that GAF is filled with Gamefan... um... fans like me. :)

Who was the guy that used to run the quasi-VOOT blog way back in the days of Gamefan.com? I want to say it was Nick Rox, but I can't remember. Though I could never appreciate the game on the same level as that staffer, I always did really enjoy his commentary.

Dammnit, now I have to keep my PLAY subscription. Dave Halverson is just starting to get too kooky in his old age but it will be too cool to read some Nick Rox again.

Unrelated to this thread, I actually bought my first issue of PLAY in well over a year today. Noticed the mammoth DQ8 cover story, and decided to plunk down the cash for the staff interviews and review text.

Despite editor criticisms, I do really love the layout of the magazine, very cohesive and organized spreads with a mastery at delivering gorgeous screen captures on that thick expensive gloss paper. In fact, I took a look through the most recent EDGE issue sitting nextdoor on the shelf and the layout similarities are pretty staggering. (Also I find it totally admirable how EDGE purposefully veers attention away from score values in it's review section. The number is practically hidden on the page!)

Halverson's "critique" of DQ8 nearly reaches levels of ridiculousness though; I'm pumped for the game too, but if an when I build a shrine to Level-5, it won't go public...

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to head out and pick up that issue then and check out the "shrine" story. :D

The layout and overall magazine is awesome and great, yea don't get me wrong there. The reviews on the other hand are just entirely undependable. Dave's Death Jr. review read like he never even came close to touching the actual game.

Yup. Buy it for the interviews, previews, pretty pictures and even the posters! Just don't buy it for the reviews. :)

There are like five posters in the DQVIII issue and the Shadow of the Colossus one is awesome.

Non-GN-knowledged: Greetings from GN's admin. :) Our board population is low, but loyal. Feel free to join the GN Community. </plug>

Back OT: This is curious timing, given magazine lead times. Nick Rox's "official" return took place a few months ago on TNL, in a big Gamefan memorial thread. Said thread is also the one that spread the word about the impending Hardcore Gamer Magazine.

This isn't intended as a knock on HGM, but I'll play the devil's advocate: Why did Nick go back to working with Halverson, versus teaming with the HGM crowd?

Dangohead was obsessed with Virtual-On, so probably him.

Dango is also known as Anthony Chau... The guy who may or may not still be working at Visual Concepts. I don't really keep up with the guy.

Thanks, dango for sure. I even remember his portrait now. That man REALLY loved his VOOT, and nearly convinced me to really love it as well.

Completely OT but I wanted to say that I like HGM. Whoever decided to send me a free subscription to the magazine: thanks!

I've been buying HGM on the newsstand and it's a good magazine. I think it needs a little better editing in some places, but the enthusiasm is there and it's definitely worth reading.

Between, HGM, Edge, Play and Computer Games Magazine (which I write for), I hardly have time to get through them all before the next month arrives.

I'm still on TNL. It's home.

I'm also one of the first people who registered at Got Next, I still remember when bahn asked me to. I think that might've been back when we were still playing Crimson Skies on a daily basis, lol. Hi Lhaddat!

I'm here, too, mostly because I kept getting linked so I decided to register. I like how busy it is and the up-to-the-minute information you get here but there are too many crazy Nintendo fans and people with horrible taste in general.

Also, I hate isamu. Keep your Nick Rox ball licking away from TNL kthnx.

Anyway, I just want to say that Nick's review of Ridge Racer for the Playstation back in the day, is almost completely responsible to for turning me into an RR fan(well, that and my former best friend Dan Granett{R.I.P.} ). When Nick described how he could just sit there and play RR with just that one track over and over again all day long, I knew there was something magical about Ridge Racer. Now, nearly ten years later, we are getting what will probably be the greatest RR game in the history of the franchise, and I wil...*fingers crossed*......hopefully be able to race against my idol Nick Rox online in Ridge Racer 6 WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!

I've always thought of TNL as something similar to a trashed frat house, or the house from ATHF. Always something burning, or exploding, or rotting in the kitchen...

And you still post, too. Hail to teh faithful!

people with horrible taste in general.

Disappointment shields up, Mr. Sulu. :lol

I specifically remember Nick Rox because his reviews were always mind-numbingly ridiculous. To this day, internet game/console fanboys remind me of Nick Rox, and I partially blame him for the rise of that mentality.

I'll second that.

Yeah, he and Casey Loe -- with a totally derivative assist from Dave Halverson and Eric Mylonas -- defined the "language" of over-the-top loser fandom that pervades videogame messageboards everywhere. Congrats to him!

Interesting Nick Rox trivia. He was among the final five or six up for the role of Anakin in Episode Two and Three of Star Wars. True Story. Can you imagine how weird it would of been had he got it?

Casey Lowe needs to get respect for his work at Versus Books, the FF7, MGS, RE2, and OoT guides are amazing.

Not because of the content exactly, but how his personality comes through in the writing.

Casey Lowe and ECM are the only two editors I'd act like a queer about online. But never as bad as the isamu/Rox thing.

sup mzo.

TNL basically is home. I'm amazed GN is still up. I registered, myself, but It's way too dull for my tastes. This place, yeah, it's nice and busy and a great news stop, but the bad taste and high-horsery gets seriously out of hand.

In other words, get out of my head.

Ah Nick Rox and Die Hard Gamefan... when I worked at the video game store I used to rip that mag and stick it in a binder to get people to preorder all of the cool games coming out like Street Fighter Alpha (blue shadows), Ridge Racer, Lunar and *smirk* Battle Arena Toshinden. Heh.
What type of circulation does Hardcore Gamer Magazine have? I've never seen it at EB, GS, grocery stores, bookstores, etc...

I used to LOVE reading the back of Gamefan. They had a section for Die Hard Online store that had all kinds cool and quirky import Japanese RPGs for sale. I used to sit there and dream about one day being able to play Dragon Quest 6 and Tengai Maikyo Zero for the ZSNES. Gamefan was the magazine that blew open the import awareness scene and turned on a whole lot of gamers to all the cool Jap games we missed out on. It's Nick and Casey's passion for those games that I respect the most :)

KLee or Mr. Jevons...please call Nick and bring him over to this thread!

:lol That's funny. Did you check the front page? GN isn't a forum, it's a content site.

Honestly, our stats are pretty good for not having a big forum. We've seen steady growth throughout this year.

SS4Rob: I leafed through HGM at Borders just last night.

Nick has co-owned TNL from the beginning. He didn't take over anything, he was always the man. TNL as a games site died because Nick didn't care about games anymore, had serious real-life shit going on, and a few people he had hired to run things had turned the editorial side of the site into an internment camp so writers stopped bothering.

It should be noted that right before TNL died, it was enjoying its highest site hits ever thanks to guys like James who was always professional and on-time with his stuff, and Derek who was never on-time but always extremely readable and entertaining (his parody Ikaruga racism editorial was linked all over the Internet and was pretty huge... it even had a couple of threads started here from guys who fell for it).

I'll also add that Nick is also one of the wittiest and coolest people I've ever known, and Got-Next sucks.

Do you register for the front page now, or is this just you being typically over-defensive over nothing?

I've only ever seen it at GameStop. Not even in any bookstores which usually carry a wide range of magazines.

I started receiving it one day out of the blue, it's a fun mag and I love their retro reviews. I was really surprised because (A) I've never heard of it and (B) It was actually well thought out. Hell I even tried out that recipé they put in there, ha ha.
