Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

It's generic, empty, slow and has segments with bad design all over the place. Did you do the dark cave? Good lord. The music is the only redeeming quality.

Expanded it beforing even entering for the first time, so I have no idea what changed.

The dark cave was awesome man. Felt like I really earned my Pagie there.

Great thread -- but the typo in the OT kills me.

Uh... it's not my fault, I was listening to this Youtube video before making the thread and didn't catch the mistake because it was there too! Blame JoeDutchCoast!!!... Or just ask a mod to fix it if you want.

I give up on trying out how to get this Pagie, I feel stupid.

it's the one where you have to shine the light on the frozen chest in the Isometric palace.. But how? There's no line of sight and nothing in the room to bend the light.

Considering what a huge success this game was on kickstarter, this thread is surprisingly quiet. I fear the so-so reviews will have harmed sales :(

Anyway, looking forward to getting back on it tonight. I'm going to try Rampo for the first time so I can join in with all your frustrations.

I don't think it's just because of reviews that this thread is quiet. A lot of people are currently playing massive games like Zelda and Persona.

I'm missing a single casino token... I've run through the level again and again and I can't find it. I hope it didn't disappear or something. I'm worried I forgot to pick one up during one of the moments they reward you and that it's gone now. Hopefully someone does a Youtube guide of all tokens soon.

There are two places with easy to miss tokens.

1.
Near the start of the level there is a slot machine that wants you to get his playing card back. There is a token underneath the ramp that he raises up.

2.
There is a token on top of the flagpole on the golf course.

It might be
on the flag at the golf course?

man the dunkey review really makes me question getting this. i was going to wait for the switch version, but i might not even bother tbh

Dunkey is a close friend of JonTron, so I doubt he himself would call that review unbiased.

Also, who takes Dunkey seriously? He also contradicts himself several times in that video.

I tried the game last night. The game clearly has a lot going for it, but I really didn't enjoy the experience at all. The camera is stunningly bad. It constantly moves on its own, often jerking wildly to try to prevent you being obscured by level geometry. The worst bit was when I climbed the temple Trowzer is at in the first world. Trying to just walk around the edge to collect the quills on the corners was agonizing because the camera kept jerking in and out to make sure a pillar never got in the way.

I guess I'll spend a bit more time on the game tonight, but unless they introduce a patch to massively improve this camera, I can't see myself sticking with this.

Apart from the camera, it seemed mostly good. The controls feel nice enough and the rolling was fun. Character designs seem pretty solid. The music was fantastic. I'm going to cross my fingers for some sort of miracle patch, because I think I'd really enjoy this if the camera wasn't such a mess.

Busy with other stuff. On the gaming side, I'm still plugging away at Tales of Berseria, crossing the 50 hour mark there but not being even close to doing everything I want to do yet, and I'm also alternating with Overwatch, which is holding an event right now.

And gaming's only one hobby, man. Unfortunately I don't have more hours in the day. I'll get to this one eventually. Probably... before Persona 5 as I'll want something to break up the Japaneseness.

I don't see where the camera complaints are coming from. I'm three worlds in and have only had trouble with it in one area (the first world boss).

I like the game a lot. Played the first level and it was great. I think the camera issue is a bit owerblown, not that it couldn't be better, it's just not a problem for me most of the time. I thought it would be worse after all the comments about it.

The top down racing thing was really bad though. Not fun at all.

Maybe a lot are in my situation where they chose for a physical edition from the kickstarter and are still waiting for it to arrive (i'm in Australia).

You should have it by now. Playtonic is asking anyone that hasn't received their physical copies yet to email them.

I played a bit of this game too. Got to the tropic level, collected 4 out of 5 ghosts, sexed the flowers with pollen, and bought the three skills from the snake. Fatigue settled in pretty quickly for me. Dealing with the camera was a pain and old school platforming lost its charm for me. Timing jumps to make moving platforms or inching to the right location to be able to make a specific jump--I understand the appeal, but it's just not there for me. Young me would've loved this game (I played through Busby 3D of all things) but cynical today me...not so much.

So there's more to the icemetric palace than the first room? How do you get past that closed gate? Tried jumping over it and hitting it in every way possible. I have all skills from world 1 and 2.

Solution:
Ground pound the tiles to create a path through the room to push the frozen block to the steam
Its obtuse admittedly as the game doesn't really have you do this ever outside of that puzzle.

Unless you mean a different room with the light beam to which the solution is similar...
push the ice block in front of the light and then go into stealth mode to redirect the light like a laser onto the pagie chest

Lots more actually. Once you beat the boss, lots of new areas open up. That gate you refer to can never be opened(but a new path appears if you look closely), but make sure to revisit almost every room in that icymetric temple(including the boss room!). Look for new steam vents and you will find lots of new areas and missing pagies.

Not alone. I'm about to complete the entire game and get the platinum trophy and its been exceedingly rare that the camera has given me issues in the ~20 hours spent with the game. It does require babysitting, but decades of right stick management should not be giving GAF players much concern.

Had the same problem.
Check under the raised ramp by the NPC that asks for you to locate his playing card. Its the ramp not far from the pachinko. A single gold coin well hidden where the pistons. Randomly stumbled on it after scouring the level myself

Just did the Snowplow bit. I was expecting it to be really bad, but I did it all easily, only messed up a couple of times going for the one up big ramp.

Yeah the control for turning can be odd, but if you only push lightly on the stick to pivot/turn it works fine.

Exactly!!! I'm sure there are games out there with good auto-cameras, but being a gamer for as long as I have been (long time lol), I honestly expect open world type games to require some sort of camera management with the right stick. This game for me so far has had the same type of it so far that i'm used to. This game overall is a 9 for me at this point. Such old school awesomeness, and no framerate issues at all either (playing on a PS4 Pro). I think most of the negative reviews were done by people who played this game without the patch that fixed most of their complaints that I haven't experience at all.

It's frustrating how many of this game's worst sections could be (mostly) fixed with checkpoints. That awful dark cave, especially.

I've been playing by getting just enough pagies to unlock each world and then going strictly for quills so that I can buy all the available moves. I find that playing this way makes it a lot easier to avoid the Metroidvania esque anger of doing a pagie only to find out your utility belt is missing the required tool to keep going.

Agreed. Also boggles my mind that there's no quick restart option for the minigames and minecart sections. Needs to be patched in ASAP.

Beat the final boss and... the game crashed before I could see the final cutscene. They really need to sort out these issues. Thankfully it still counted as beating him and I unlocked the proper trophy and tonics.

I don't mind doing it again to see the ending though because the final boss is actually pretty fun. The biggest issue is the complete lack of direction on what to do for each phase, I spent the first couple of tries figuring out what I could get away with (the solution for
getting rid of the bees
is not exactly intuitive considering
the camo move and sonar 'splosion were never previously used together to defeat an enemy)
and I can easily see less patient players getting fed up quickly. I also think a health bar of some sort would really help make the bosses clearer as they don't have very obvious hit feedback and even something simple like Banjo-Tooie's health point numbers would make it clear when you're having an effect and when you're not.

You don't need to use the camo move during the final boss at all.

Does anyone know what you're supposed to do with items that have a white glow around them? Does it depend on the item/context?

I just made it to the snow world. It's really pretty. I've found two such items, one in the caves (I'm not sure what this is, maybe the snowman's hat?) and one outside (a beehive). How can I interact with these items?

I'd appreciate any help.

Find Trowzer (He's always near the entrance of a world).

The beehive you can lick with your tongue to gain a temporary ability to stick to snow(letting your roll or run up slick slopes).

Other highlighted items often require a later ability to earn to deal with them.

I can't understand how some people don't like the game.

It's pure joy.

It's okay, doesn't affect my enjoyment. Loving it as well, runs like a dream 4k 60fps too :)

Edit: I will say I HATE the roll being tied to a energy bar though. I would talon trot everywhere in BK and BT

Played up until I expanded the first world, it's really fun so far. Not sure why voices were being complained about so much when you can skip through 90% of the grunting?

Well, I'm in love with this game. It's exactly what I hoped it would be. Scratches that niche spot that's been itching for years. Runs amazingly on PC, 4k60fps locked easily with a 1070.

My only criticism would be the lack of enemy variety and I would've liked more of a story, even if these platformers don't traditionally have them. All in all, it's an awesome return to form for the guys at Playtonic, cant wait for some DLC or a sequel.

I'm having fun with it, but this ain't no Banjo Kazooie. I've played through BK this past weekend. I wasn't planning on it, it just grabbed me and I played through it in 2 days. First time I played it since its release and man that game holds up perfectly, I had a blast.

Going in it with a fresh view on BK probably soured my YL experience as it just doesn't compare very well. It's clearly a clone, but it's lacking in all the important areas like controls and level-design. Overall it just feels very unpolished and rough and a lot of Pagie challenges are just shit, whereas BK was almost always oozing with creativity; it was tightly designed and the controls were fine for the most part. YL's levels just have lots of dead space and seemingly random junk thrown in to fill them out, only making it seem cluttered in all the wrong ways, they just don't seem that well thought out.

Combat in BK was pretty bad (one of the few downsides to the game, together with a clunky camera), but somehow it's worse in YL, moves often don't seem to connect, adding to the frustration.

The camera is just shit, it kinda baffles the mind how this could have passed quality control; it gets stuck all the goddamn time, has a mind of its own and actively acts against the player.

That said, even though I might sound really down on the game, I am having fun with it. This type of game just doesn't come around very often and I find it charming and overall it controls well enough and offers plenty of content.

If you're a fan of the genre I'd cautiously give it a go; see if you can cope with the issues and look past them. I'm (for the most part) able to, so I'll give it a pass. It's a BK clone through and through and that's exactly what saves it. In the end it's not quite there in the design department, but there's enough good to be said about it too.

I'm usually the last guy to complain about a wonky camera, but I'm finding YL's to be quite a nuisance. I hate that it literally gets stuck, forcing me to correct my movement. I'm not even done with the game and this happened a bunch of times.

My biggest complaint on voices is that they are really loud. If they had their own volume slider it would be more than fine imo

Where did they say this because they certainly havent sent a backer update about it. Really glad i got a tier that included both the physical edition and a digital code so i could actually play the game because the way this has been handled has been a complete mess on my end

. Can't believe I spent over an hour looking for this, haha. I can finally continue.

That one also took me a really long time to find. It ends up being so obvious in hindsight.

being able to skip some of them excuses how bad they are in comparison to BK?

There is like the same amount of grunting in dialogue in Banjo, this is a complaint I definitely don't get.

A voice slider would be nice, that's kinda default in like every game these days. :p
