Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

There's no need to use British slang in a trivia game. I don't really care if they use it in the game, but not in a trivia game.

it's not slang though

not sure why you are complaining about the game based on your ignorance of the language, instead of choosing to take this as an opportunity to broaden your knowledge.

So everyone agrees that Glitterglaze Glacier is the best level, right? :P

I keep coming back here just for the music and overall atmosphere. It might even beat out Freezeezy Peak for me.

it's the worst level.. not sure why people seem to like it so much
-bad layout
-worst transformation
-that damned cave

icymetric palace is cool, but everything else in that level is meh

I enjoyed worlds 3 and 4 more than that tbqh...

haven't hit up 5 yet

Can someone tell me if the pirate skull thing for world 5 is indoors or outdoors? I'm losing my mind searching for it (and want just a small hint).

I'm playing this on pc and im enjoying it but fuck that camera has made me stop playing. Playing a foot away from a 27" monitor is difficult when the camera is so consistently erratic

The camera kinda sets off my motion sickness :-/

I wasn't sure if it was because I was streaming but the early level kinda did when I moved it around a lot. Might need TXAA? Helped to focus on yooka but it didn;t bother me after a while of getting used to it.

Screenshotted this:

Looks amazing on my phone's screen, makes me want a bigger phone. Using a samsung 6edge Plus so it's a decent size but a little more would be better. Love the cute animations on the d-pad.

Yeah it's all over the place. I hope they fix it but I have a feeling they would have by now if they could. I'm playing on a monitor up close and it's bad enoug where I stopped playing. I might play on my tv where I'm hoping it won't bother me as much. It's a shame cause the game itself is fun

As much as I like the Rextro character I really hope his minigames don't make a return. They really detract from the experience. I don't know if I have the patience for this
flappy bird
shit,

Did the last Pagie
flying one
in Glitterglaze, the camera was pretty annoying while doing that. First time I've had to really fight the camera spazzing out, also the one in Tribalstack Tropics had issues too.

Didn't take too long to get it done, but still.

Nintendo's YouTube just put up an interview video with the devs.

Nice! Hope this means the NS release isn't too far off...still holding off in hopes that we see a physical release on Nintendo Switch (as far as I know, they've only said there's no plan for it, but that doesn't completely rule it out!).

Hey yall I need some help with Glitterglaze Glacier regarding one of the ghostwriters
How do I get the yellow one by the entrance thats blocked by fire? I figure I need to find a water plant somewhere but I cant find anything. Theres an ice plant near one of the honey hives on the way up to the palace which is close enough to use on the fire but it doesnt do anything.
It mightve already been answered in this thread but I havent had time to comb through it

shit,
Ive only played two of the games so far but both of them feel like im spending too much time playing a game meant for four players by myself. If they were shorter, snappier, or had some sort of AI (and i didnt have to play them a second time) they'd be a lot more tolerable

Nope, you'd think that but actually when you eat the coals from the fire it lets you walk through it.

Eat some fire. It makes you immune to fire while you're heated up.

Thanks gang, would've never figured that out!
I guess thats knowledge I theoretically shouldve picked up during the torch mission

I have a backlog but something is making me want to play YL... But... So busy with Zelda... Such limited gaming time. :/ Maybe I'll wait for a sale. I was hugely into BK when I played it as a kid but iffy camera is a major concern for me. When going back to BK not long ago I found the camera way too clunky and archaic. Is the camera here about the same as it was there? Any smoother?

It's definitely better than BK. It's mostly as you'd expect third person games to work, but it 'corrects' itself too often and gets stuck on things like they made the camera a physical body instead of a non-collision object. It requires a little wrestling from time to time, but largely I feel the issues with the camera are overstated. There is definite room for improvement however.

100%ed it just now. Great game hampered by some unfun mini-games, a couple awkward boss fights (worlds 2 and 5), and a few technical issues (got stuck in a few places, a minigame in world 4 glitched out on me, the camera). Overall good effort for a Kickstarted game.

Definitely worth a second playthrough... after a patch or two. Loved how some of the areas felt right out of Tooie. Grant Kirkhope's tracks were exactly what I wanted, too.

Not to mention the orchestral version of the OST.

I can see myself doing it again for that alone.

Got to World 3. Im surprised by the BK comparisons I read earlier when what it reminds me most is the swamp world in Jak 1 - a focused, semi-linear world where you do a lot of minor platforming in between objectives that keeps moving itself along because instead of having to seek stuff out you just keep moving forward. At least when its unexpanded anyways. It helps that the underwater bubble and the lizard lash are more fun than most of the other moves I've unlocked so far

I think the standard camera is fine in wide open areas, the issues arise when you're in cramped sections or they try to force your view. You get camera jank I havent seen since the 90s out of those.

Just cleared out world three. I almost have Hivory Towers cleaned up too...Minus one pagey. That stupid downhill race with the force fields is aggravating. I am really debating on holding off on a 100% run because of it. Everything else has been great.

Barring the race, my only complaint would be that I wish the levels were... Tighter, I guess? Some of the item placement feels weird, and while I like 90% or so of a level, I really feel like a layout change would benefit some levels. (Looking at you, Tribalstack Tropics.)

The slider challenge outside of world 5 represents everything that is wrong with Yooka-Laylee. Everything. Jesus fucking christ. This is a bad video game, guys.

I'm on it right now. There is no amount of forgiveness on it. The challenge is dumb and hard and unforgiving.
Edit: I beat it am not happy it was so hard. Many of the tasks or mini games in yooka Layla are too hard for no reason.

Oddly enough, it only took 3-4 tries for me and I still seriously hated it. I'd agree about the the task/mini games. Mostly just frustrating and very little fun factor involved in these.

This game has so much potential. It's like there is something golden underneath all this shit, but it needs some good cleaning.
Other issues I have are:
-Transformations usually have a use for one task. They don't do much else beyond getting that one Pagie.
-Some tasks don't feel rewarding enough despite how many hoops you have to jump through to get whatever is at the end.
-Quizzes are awful
-More variety in enemies
-Game isn't as funny as BK. Often the jokes are eye roll inducing.

I don't think this game is great, but I do want to see a sequel and hope Playtonic can really make something amazing.

World 3 has some discrete, semi-linear tasks, but it is intertwined and lets you choose your path, followin Quills around, relatively freely. This is in contrast to the linear Jak task that are just fully linear and similar to the original Banjo-Kazooie, which of course was somewhat forced into this structur I particularly value because of level size contraints.

@Max: The camera performs well most of the time, it is just when you try to turn in close to a point where the developers force the camera into a specific position, that it can easily get annoying. Since it does not affect most of the game experience, I would say it should not hinder your enjoyment of the game.

Ha, that free power you get just before world five essentially breaks the game.

Missing like 12 Quills and 3 Pagies in the first world. Dunno if I can be bothered to hunt them down. Overall I think that I like the idea of Yooka-Laylee more than I enjoy playing it. I really fancy running around a cool world collecting stuff, but there's too much working against it to be fun.

Ignoring the sometimes imprecise controls and the wayward camera, some of the activities in the game are at best not-that-fun and at worst an actual blight on the game. Kartos can fuck off and those slots machines are tedious, just as two examples.

What a game! Haven't felt like this for a long time. I spent all of yesterday playing this. Didn't eat much and woke up in a sorry state today.

Time to continue playing!

I don't think I can 100% this, btw. Don't need to. If you guys like YK and haven't played DK64 yet, do it! In my eyes this game is as much of a successor to it as it is to the Banjo games (if not more). <3

Tooie + Dk64 = YK sounds about right.

Now give me a new Jet Force Gemini type of game, please.

I knew it reminded me of something I couldn't quite recall, yeah the Jak 1 swamp is a strong comparison point.

OK, there's a matter of opinion and then there's just being bad at the game. There's nothing cheap or broken about the slide, you just have to get good at it.

It's not even a required pagie. In fact, the final boss only requires 100 Pagies, so if you add up the 10 Rextro challenges + 6 Kartos + the slide, that's still a whole 28 Pagies more that you don't actually have to get. I recommend anyone who's not having fun with a hard challenge just skip it because there will inevitably still be enough to beat the game.

Sorry to hear you had such problems with the boss. What phase do you mean btw? The one where the tentacle tries to attack you from above? I did him on my first try, maybe you did something wrong!? I really enjoyed the fight, too. Not a bad boss at all.

I have to disagree a bit about the controls. I think they are mostly more responsive than in the old Banjo games. I can move around the world with such ease that just controlling these guys is fun in itself.

I'm talking about when you have to go through water. I consider myself an experienced gamer, but getting the double jump timings right there to me was very tricky.

In general, I think the animations are a bit too drawn out and the timings are unforgiving. I also had an issue jumping over the marching spikey walls in Iceymetric Palace. I don't remember having these sorts of issues in BK.

The thing that makes Kartos a waste of time is the lack of a "restart challenge" option. You know when you fucked up, but you have to finish it or fall off to try again, and then mash X through Kartos' blather again. Hoping for a patch to fix this, and lower the requirements for Pagies by about 25 gems for each Kartos challenge.
The only retro arcade game I hate is the world 4 one. Way too hard, and too long, and hard to see where the character is at the bottom of the screen.
I'm at 101 Pagies after 17 hours, and only have like 4 Pagies in world 5 so still lots to see.

Oh, and on the British-isms in the writing - while I would not want them to change the original script, perhaps they could do an optional localised American script to cater for those not so familiar with British English. It surely wouldn't be that much work.

However, it is refreshing to have a game with so much British culture in the writing. Almost all games, even if they aren't American, are written with an American audience in mind. It's a shame a lot of the humour won't be grasped by non-British players, but for me, the game wouldn't be as fun and charming if they had tried to make it appeal to everyone.

Just finished world one almost done with two and..the game is ok? Having played both Banjo and Tooie before jumping in the game isn't as bad as I expected but im not enjoying it anywhere close to Banjo. Its more just *there* something to play not something im actively looking forward to.

Played a few more hours, done a big chunk of the marsh level, and continue to enjoy it. For all the complaints that this is just a nostalgia fest, I actually feel like they've added an awful lot of new play mechanics, eg. the switching between underwater walking and swimming - some of the puzzles here are quite creative and not something I've seen in other games.

However, I think in general the difficulty level is a bit too high, and this only emphasises how unrefined the controls are. For instance, the marsh boss, Trev (the northern bloke having a cup of tea while he watches the soaps - hilarious stuff). When it gets to the point where you have to wade around doing multiple jumps, it becomes very frustrating when you don't get the jump press timing exactly right. They should either tone down the difficulty, or make the controls a bit more forgiving and give some leeway on the timing. I think I spent an hour trying to beat that boss, and it seriously made me wonder whether the game was a worthwhile use of time as a result.

At the very least, offer varying difficulty levels, for those who don't want a crazy challenge. A lot of us, especially those who are BK fans and now adults with commitments, don't have as much time for games as it is. A challenge is good, but not to the point that it's frustrating and time-wasting.

I just waited near the end of his tentacle where it was thinnest and just jumped normally, it never even got close to hitting me. It also does the same animation every time so it's easy to predict. Fun boss though.

Speaking of the general difficulty level of the game, I haven't come across anything so far that has taken me more than 2 or 3 tries to get past it. I really don't get why folks are having such a tough time here.

The force field slide is definitely a pain, took me around 10 tries because there is no margin of error. Not that I think it was unfair, but it's certainly more challenging than it needs to be.

Have you done Rextro on world 5? Not only is the game far too long, but every hit knocks you down thousands of points and you need 14000 for the high score. It is not cool. It's the last pagie I have left to gather.

Overall, due to some uneven difficulty I rate this game a little lower than I initially did, but damn this is a fine as hell playable experience. I rate it below Kazooie, almost up to par with Tooie and ahead of DK64. I do wish it had more worlds, but for the $15 I paid as a backer I am not complaining.

If I weren't such an obsessive compulsive completionist I'd probably have had fewer issues with the difficulty but I can't let there be missing pagies or quills or pirate's treasure. ANYWHERE.

I agree with everything here. There's so much to love, but Playtonic would make it easier on themselves, if it had a lower difficulty and checkpoints + option to skip dialogue/cutscenes. I found it quite easy, even though it was obvious that it's harder than many other modern games and for the genre and vibe it emits, it really should be cosy entertainment. Many of the old Rare games would also be considered frustrating if released today without nostalgia to cloud ones vision.

I like it better than Tooie and DK64, the first which I always found to have too much aimless wandering and the second too many collectibles. YL has better platforming than all the Rare games, which is what I value most.

That said I like them all and BK being the original will remain my favorite :)

100 gems from the minecart in Glitterglaze is 100% bullshit

Edit: OK. The trick is to not touch the accelerator at all and go slow. That worked.

World 2 boss just seemed like it kept going on and on. What a boring boss fight.

Yea its overlong, but there is a real helpful trick to slimming it down if one is to fight it after earning a later ability. Most will choose not to progress to later stages over attempting while in W2 the first time though leading to this common complaint.

Yea, that force field slide challenge near the end took me lots of attempts. Found that it was easiest to just allow yourself to be hit at one section to gain the recovery invincibility frames to just speed through a few barriers instead of weaving. Still, a rough one due to the strict timing required.

The flappy bird arcade machine wasn't too bad for me, but like W4's similar game, being safe is more important than being greedy and it kind of works itself out if doing so given how many easy points are on the direct route. even if it means missing some of the tougher big point dumps. Think I had 17000 when I finished it on attempt 4 or 5 only hitting a wall once.

Nintendo's YouTube just put up an interview video with the devs.
Like someone else said, I hope that means the Switch version is coming soon. If the footage in that interview is legit Switch footage, it looks damn near done. I backed the game on KS and got my PC version earlier in the week and its performance is dreadful on my computer. I've got Switch selected as the platform for my extra digital copy, it's just the waiting game now.
