Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I've only played till the 2nd world, but I agree that the Icy palace is awesome, and gives the have a sense of discovery and a massive scope I haven't gotten from a game since Banjo-Tooie. However, I will also say that world has the worst part is the game Ive seen so far, in that how confusing and hard to understand the objectives are; getting the snowmen their hats and going through the Kokiri-Forest type Icy maze was an exercise in frustration.

There's nothing defensible about the plow, but the Zelda maze is solved by using the sonic shouts at the exits and hearing which gives a chime. The sign in the room tells you this.

Just beat the game about 10 minutes ago, 100% everything, all trophies.

I found it to be 95% fun and enjoyable... and 5% annoying as all hell.

I did get the email from the Kickstart group saying that they're going to address a lot of the camera and control concerns, and give us options to skip cutscenes and dialogue. While I wish I had had those fixes and changes at the start, if they can pull it off smoothly, the game's an easy recommendation to any platform lover.

That said, I really grew to detest the Hurdles and Flappy Bird high score mini-games. Lag and bad controls really soured my experience with them. I also had a hell of a time trying to get that "slide past the lasers" Pagie in Ivory Towers. Eventually got it... then got the Sonic Shield immediately after. Can't blame the game for that hour and half of frustration. That one was on me being too hasty.

Final fight was also a LOT harder than it needed to be for me as well until I changed up my tactics and gave myself some better Tonics.

I've been holding off on playing this game since they announced the patch contents that'll be coming.

I wasn't bothered by most of it to be honest, but any improvements to the experience will be welcome.

As a major fan of Banjo Kazooie (and Tooie), I am very unsatisfied with this game. It does look gorgeous at times, but everything else just falls short. :/

Played the first hour today on PC. Lots of stuff to like here... I like the way the levels have so much to do, and that stuff is gated based on abilities.

I know it doesn't need to be said again, but my god the voices... I'm stunned that anyone who played or tested the game prior to release didn't make a bigger deal about it. It's just so terrible.

Camera jumping around and doing that fast jump/zoom thing in closer quarters also gave me slight motion sickness. Only other game to make me feel a little queasy playing it was The Witness pre-FOV patch.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it so far, and it runs nicely on PC at 4K (have to dial it back from Fantastic though since my card is a little older). It does feel like a game a generation or two old, but I'm OK with that.

I really hope that they leave in the option to have the camera be just as it is, because it's great just as it is and does not need to be "fixed"!

Seriously, I'm now about 10 hours into the game, and still have no clue why people are complaining about the camera. Literally my only complaint about it is that after going through a door it's a bit annoying that the camera faces the door instead of forwards, so you then have to spin the camera around or run into the screen to go forwards, but that's really minor; otherwise the camera is great, and is almost always right where you want it to be. And in the rare cases that it's not, there is the center camera button and right stick there to easily fix that; the camera is not an issue. It's very much like a Rare N64 3d platformer camera of course, but Rare's N64 3d platformers had pretty good cameras, so that's just fine. (And for anyone who forgets what a bad camera in a 3d game is like... well, try most any 3d Sonic Team game released from the mid '90s to the mid '00s...)

The one thing I really do hope that they put in is a quick restart option for challenges, because it's annoying to have to wait around for what can be quite a while for the race to finish, or platform sequence to finish, or what have you, AND then go all the way back to the start point, before you are finally allowed to try again. A quick restart option in the pause menu would be great.

I wish I had had your experiences. I found the camera... okay... for a majority of the game, but I absolutely had problems with it later on. I'd be trying to get a particular item and suddenly the camera angle would abrupt switch right before I got it. I'd be sliding down hills trying to avoid obstacles and needing precise controls and the camera would spin out of control and refuse to center on me. One early example that cracked me up was I was having the race with the cloud and the camera started to just pull way, way back and drift to the left like it had lost interest in the race and got distracted by a squirrel or something.

I really have had legitimate camera problems that have cost me Pagies and Quills numerous times, and the problem became far more frequent the further into the game I got where more precise control and tighter spaces were the norm (looking at you, Cashino world...).

95% of the time it was fine, but 5% of the time it definitely wasn't working as intended for me. Still finished the game and got all the trophies yesterday though.

Seriously, I'm now about 10 hours into the game, and still have no clue why people are complaining about the camera.

The issue I had was its tendency to assume it knew best and "snap" back into place. This behaviour made adjusting the camera to gain a better perspective an exercise in frustration as the aggressiveness with which it readjusts is far beyond other third-person titles in recent memory. If nothing else, I would have liked an option to disable the auto-correction entirely as the game already has a recentre camera button.

I picked this up on a nostalgia kick and I'm glad I did. I'm loving the huge worlds and the "inspiration" (aka blatant ripoff) of BK's style. Haven't warmed to the characters as much as I did with BK, but I was like 12 at the time so it's probably just me.

If it weren't for the twisted review system I'd say this game deserves its MC score, but with the way things work I'm a bit disappointed it didn't break 80. I understand why, people are reviewing it as a current gen game when it's purposely recreating a...how long has it been?....20 year old game? Jesus I'm old...Anyways thanks to this thread for convincing me to take the plunge!

The biggest offender for me was that Playtonic did not apply a fix to the age-old problem of suddenly changing the camera angle, which changes the direction you were headed back to where you came from. Cue the player jittering back and forth at the edge of the zone where the camera angle changes.

Oh, yeah, the later stages of the Planette boss fight were mildly frustrating as, while the camera angle is consistent, its position is not and movement is inverted if you travel too closely to the southern end of the arena.

I'm loving this game, just got to the second book world though I know I missed some stuff in the first
It's a great throwback to the BK games, the puns are great & I really love its art direction and the sense of exploration so far

Haven't had any issues apart from framerate dropping during the loading screen and having to fight the camera on a couple occassions

Finished and Platinumed the game in 20 hours. Don't see much of the negativity. Game was good. I'd give it a 7.5ish as I had issues with unskippable dialogue and some boses felt rather uninspired. One funny thing was that the game crashed for the first time once I finished the final boss.

Theres a real bad one in Capital Cashino where theres one thin area in the middle of the world where the game switches to a sideview for when you get shot out of a fountain to get some floating quills. Except its baked into the world itself, so when you use the fly move if you cut right through the center it becomes this disorienting mess as you keep coming in and out of the sliver of space that dictates the camera change

So did anyone else think the bit with the asteroid guy was at least 3-4 notches above everything else in terms of raunchiness? That was almost on the level of CBFD.

Dont care what anybody says, this game is exactly what I wanted. I dont understand what people were expecting, because it practically was Banjo. Just beat it and I loved it. It practically was Banjo, and im very excited for a sequel.

Played on PC, and it was flawless. Now i need to 100% it, as im missing a few pagies, and quills from each world.

I have to say, I've found the Kartos challenge of the Cashino the most enjoyable of them all. The design of the track is excellent and the difficulty is very well adjusted. In addition, the boss battle of this world has also been amazing; pretty clever, with in crescendo routines and three well differentiated phases (and an outstanding musical theme).

I feel dirty, but overall I think the Cashino has been my favourite world this far, being the swamps the one I've enjoyed less. World 1 and 2 have won a lot with the expansions too, as I said in an earlier post. We'll see how goes the thing with the last one.

Just finished 100% in about 30 hours total. Yooka Laylee scratched an inch I've long had for a fun 3D mascot platformer with modern graphics. The camera and the voices didn't bother me very much aside from a few instances in tiny rooms (the camera tends to freak out in them) Playtonic I think succeeded in this first attempt given limitations in budget, personnel and time to make a fun, good looking 3D platformer. The standout here is definitely the music, the composers did a wonderful job of enhancing each level with catchy rhythmic tunes. Overall, if I were to score the game i would say it is around a 7 or 8 out of 10 based simply upon how much I enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny. Thank god for the Hunter tonic.

Did they fix the camera yet? I backed this and played it when it released, but had to stop because I couldn't get over how terrible the camera was.

Just finished the game this morning and I have to say that overall I'm a bit disappointed. I'm a huge Banjo Kazooie fan so I had really high hopes for Yooka Laylee. There are things to like in this game for sure, but I feel that it really needed some polishing as many parts of the game were just overly frustrating.

What I liked:
-The music. The quality is right up there with Banjo Kazooie.
-The visuals. The game looks great and I like the varied themes between the worlds.
-The humor. The game knows exactly how seriously to take itself.

What I didn't like:
-The camera. As mentioned by many others the camera in this game is really frustrating to deal with at times.
-The controls. Mainly around rolling and flying, it just felt a bit awkward to control Yooka a lot of the time.
-The timed challenges. I really don't like being timed in games and it especially bad in this game due to the camera and controls. Way too many challenges I felt that were hard due to bad controls rather than good design.

I'm still really glad this game got made and I really hope we get a sequel that's more smooth around the edges.

Finally found the last
skull
and got the platinum, it took a while but it feels good to have found them all without using a guide.
But now... do they have a purpose? If there's something to do with them once you have them all, could I get a hint?

Also, while messing around on world 5 by pure chance I made appear
a robot on the ship which talks about loading something at 50,1%.
Again, if there's some secret about it, I'd like a hint (rather than the full story) of what to do please.

Neither does anything AFAIK, at least not yet. The latter is an Easter egg that follows on from the Toyboy.

Just started the game and want to know- should i expand a world or shpuld i unlock new ones?

You should be able to find enough Pagies to do both without too much difficulty, but it's really just personal preference which you do first. Unlocking new worlds first brings greater variety; expanding first may mean that you find it easier to explore the resulting expanded world from it being fresher in your memory.

Need that switch release date asap

Yeah really.

I'm glad I got it on Steam on day 1 though. I thought I would regret the move and that Playtonic would announced a date, like, a week after or something like that.

Glad I was wrong though. At least I'm getting my money's worth out of the Steam version in the meantime. :lol

Just finished the game, but the game crashed in the ending cinematic.

I expected waaay worse. The game is not perfect by any mean but it was exactly what it promised to be. I'm glad I played it, I'm already in line for the next game.

EDIT: Right found World 4 and only got Trouser's abilities from it.
Does World 5 show up soon? I'd want to get all abilities before clearing some more. I know I've got a few more stuff to pick up in World 2 for one thing.

World 1 has 3 Pagies and some 16 or so Quills uncollected, but I think I've been just about everywhere even under the monument. I had Nimbo flood the area and found the Pagie underwater too.
What else am I missing?

Welp unlocked the last world and got alla bilities now to backtrack and get everything. Wonder where those last 3 quills in Hivory Towers are...

Consider going back to the area right at the start of the game Shipwreck creek, it may be outside Hivory Towers but I recall it having a few quills that count towards them.

Yeah Hivory Towers includes the ones from the area around Yooka's home so it's possible they are there.

EDIT: OK that last Quill in T. Tropics is evil
EVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL!

I'm having a lot of fun with this. 100%'d the first 3 worlds and working through the Casino now.

I like the gimmick with the coins, however i'd heard of a glitch whereby collecting too many can break the counter resulting in missing a Pagie so it's a little tedious going back to turn them in every time I collect 10 rather than just rampaging around collecting as many as possible.

You're correct that there's a glitch here, but it's not related to "collecting too many" coins; rather, it comers from the game not correctly keeping track of previously collected coins upon certain triggers, in conjunction with expanding the world. To guard against being impacted by the glitch, the best approach is to expand the world immediately (before entering it for the first time), then collect all 190 coins in one go, without leaving. You don't need to turn them in every time you collect 10.

Finished this finally the other day. Thoroughly enjoyed it overall - music, characters, humour, and most of the challenges. I did not 100% it and won't. I saw enough having got 101 pagies, and don't wish to torture myself trying to do some of the more poorly-designed challenges.

I'd say I probably enjoyed the game more than Banjo-Tooie, which for me was spoiled by the mini games and dodgy frame rate, but YL is still some distance behind Banjo-Kazooie, and is seriously lacking polish compared to the Nintendo-era Rare days. It clearly needed much more QA testing and refining of the challenges, controls and the infamous camera (which didn't bother me as much as some people, but did get progressively more annoying).

I salute Playtonic for the obvious hard work they put into this, and hope they'll feel encouraged to build on this for their next game.
