Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I love the big open worlds. I get lost, but I actually like that. I like his moveset and the visuals are superb - the way the world looks and sounds, the characters and style, plus the animations are stellar.

The only things I wish were a bit different:

  • Things that block the camera don't and instead turn semi-transparent
  • Slightly less speed when rolling slowly - I'll probably get used to this but it would be good imo to not need to be as careful with how much you're moving the stick - he's a speedy fucker
-Minor:

  • It would be nice if you could jump straight into a roll, for flow
  • Maybe soften the character voices a tad
That would make it perfect for me, but as it is, I'm very happy playing it already.

Just 100%'d World 3. I wasn't expecting to love it when I first saw it but dang, it's the best world so far. It's like a giant Kazooie level.

Actually, I'm starting to feel like the worlds were specifically designed to appeal to different types of fans. Worlds 1 and 2 are for the Tooie fans who like expansive areas to explore, Worlds 3 and 5 are for the Kazooie fans who want tight level design with no space wasted, and World 4 is for DK64 fans who said "more things to collect please".

This mirrors exactly my feeling about the third level, so hearing what you say about the fifth level, I look forward to it very much.

Didn't you find it incredibly bland visually, compared to the rest of the worlds? I'm surprised to not seeing it commented here, so maybe is due to the quality of the footage I've seen of world 3 but man, it looked like an early PS2 game in HD while the tropics, the glacier and the hub are just stunning and a delight to look at. That swamp could really use more illumination and a background that is not made of black tree silhouettes.

Completely disagree. Particularly when you earn a late-game ability to soak in the entire stage. Lots of visual identity to appreciate, world 3 also features some of the best platforming challenges in the entire game.

Jeez, I can see why Playtonic said the IGN Capital Cashino footage wasn't representative of the final product. In-game it looks way better than the trailer. Took a screenshot of roughly the same area as the video, the structure in the background being neon-lit makes a world of difference:

I agree it doesn't look as pretty as the others but the gameplay in it is much more focused. You spend less time looking for the next things to do and more time simply doing them because the level guides you to everything perfectly.

I like the design of the regular enemy characters in the two worlds I've seen, but I wish they were a little bit more challenging. I've only been hit once and it was on purpose so that I could see the character's animations when they take damage.

Edit: also I chased my first ghostwriter and the noises they make are hilarious.

Has anyone figured out the
pirate treasure and Toybox
secrets yet? I assume the former is
a new Stop n Swop
but I have no clue about how you progress the latter.

I have two questions:

1. In world one, I found an alcove with a skeleton laying there. I was able to get in that little alcove but there was nothing to collect. It stood out far too much for it to be nothing. Does this have to do with that hidden pirate treasure that's in each world? What do I do with this spot? I'll note here that I went there before expanding it so maybe something changed from the expansion.

2. What's the controls for the
sonar
move? I wish you could look at the full move set in the start menu. I know I'll have it all down eventually though, just disjointed play sessions thus far.

1. Talk to the skeleton, that'll trigger some baddies arriving, beat them for a pagie. The area behind that opens when you expand the level.

2. Y or triangle.

lol not that skeleton, I'd smack myself for not figuring that out. I'm talking about an inanimate one that's laying in an alcove
on the side of the temple with flames you dodge.

Thanks for number 2's answer, thought I tried hitting that last night but I'll try again tonight.

1. It's just an alcove. Keep looking around that ruin for more though, you might be surprised at what you find.

2. Triangle/Y. Not sure what it would be if you're using KB+M controls.

Press Y to shoot sonar waves. I think you can ask Trowzer if you want to re-read the instructions.

I'm playing on PS4 so triangle it is, thanks again guys. That alcove stood out so much and you have to do a little platform maneuver to get to it, how can it be nothing?! haha Hmm I'll have to take another look to see if I missed anything.

Agreed. Casino looks quite nice visually and is full of variety. It's especially apparent when you take to the skies and have the full level in view. Not quite as much a fan of the content compared to other levels, a few great platforming challenges mixed with a lot of lesser activities(slot machines, pachinko) but I definitely expected worse given the early footage.

Oh and that world houses the WORST retrox arcade game. It will likely single-handedly be the limiting factor to reaching 100% for most players in terms of getting the high score. Just hate that minigame. (It's currently the only thing I have left to do to completing that world and I am unsure if I can do it myself...:()

The arcade game in the next world is much harder to get the high score on.

Btw, something I learned early on: At the end of a double jump, press forward and attack and you'll cover more distance to make jumps when he does his attack in the air.

While you're floating you can also let go of A and press it again, to continue floating at a lower altitude. Nice with a few techniques you have to discover for yourself.

Nice, thanks! I'll try that out next time I play today.

I tried jumping off a really big height and then pressing jump again before I fell to stop him dying and that works too.

Man, every other YL thread on GAF and every YL video on Youtube are making me super sad. This is the only thread with any positivity.

I hate gamers. This is a really excellent title and bandwagon haters are everywhere.

If this really is the end for 3d platformers because people can't form their own opinions then I think I'm done with games.

BTW: How do you get to the highest point on the roof of the building right in the middle of world 1? Because there's a
pagie
flying around. I was on the roof but couldn't get on the pillar.

Don't worry. The haters are in the minority. The rest of us enjoys the game ;)

Amen.

If a new 3D Ty doesn't happen, I'm blaming this nostalgia negativity.

You bastards killed Croc and now he'll stay dead.

If you want some more positivity, trying looking around on Twitch. Every streamer I've come across seems to love the game.

It's even starting to win me over and I don't even like the original Banjo-Kazooie very much.

Ahhh welp I am finally experience some regret with this game.

And it has nothing really to do with the game itself (if I'm being honesty, two worlds in it's everything I expected it to be. That is a solid, charming BK-like game.)

It's more like I got the PS4 version, and while it looks absolutely gorgeous, this morning I realized I couldn't take it to work with me. So now I guess I'll be enjoying some Zelda and Snake Pass during breaks and lunch instead.

I'm feeling the exact same way.

This game is giving me such nostalgic joy and I'm enjoying every second (minus the camera in the first boss fight). It really is a bummer to see all the "edgy" people hop on the hating bandwagon.

However, this game obviously isn't for everyone so if someone has played it and dislikes it, their opinion is just as valid as mine and should be welcomed here too.

Who else immediately expands worlds? I want to explore these big worlds from the get-go.
Then again, I am a Tooie fan. :P

Or was, atleast. Haven't played that game in ages. Maybe I'll return to it after Yooka-Laylee.

Anyway, I have to get back about my comment about the shitty double jump. Turns out, after buying a certain move from Trowzer, it feels pretty darn great. I should have known.

Really impressed with the main-characters animations and I love both Looka and Laylee's design. Especially Laylee.

I'm the same way. Give me a massive world to get lost in! I believe they did it this way as a compromise between Kazooie and Tooie fans though. You can have a tightly packed level to explore first or get lost in a big one!

Totes, it's fine to dislike the game if you've played it or the genre never appealed to you. If someone played it and disliked it, I'd be interested to see why in a review. Criticism is healthy for any medium and helps make better products.

It's the people who have never played it and just decided they didn't like it because they read or watched a review then take it a step further by posting this opinion on the internet as if it were their own. If you have played the game and you just don't like it, that's perfectly fine. If you haven't played the game, shut your trap. People want the privilege to speak on the game but don't want to pay the toll of actually playing it. It's ridiculous.

That's where a lot of this frustration was born. I was watching the Vinesauce stream and it's just a torrent of "gay game is gay" and "this game is shit." Vinny liked the damn game, but the chat was pure cancer. It's never that bad. You never get comments like that on any other game except for Sunday streams when he plays actual trash and ironic shitpost games.

My favourite recurring comment? "JonTron did nothing wrong."

Has anyone tried attacking the World 1 boss after defeating him? I love little details like that.

I actually loved the first two bosses so far, though the second boss goes on way too long.

The first boss wasn't frustrating or badly-designed at all. You just need to know to control your roll.

I'm able to run this at a locked 60 (according to my frame counter), but it definitely doesn't feel like it. There's some weird stutter going on that seems to pop up at certain instances, mostly when the camera hits a wall.

It was impossible to resist ground pounding his eye.

I was fearing that boss fight after the giantbomb quick look, but I was able to get up there and figure it out on my first try. It fits with my impression of their game skills from listening to their podcasts.

Couldn't stop playing this yesterday. I intended to play something else, but this apparently bad game just kept me absorbed. It controls almost perfectly, with my only issue being the final ability's awkwardness.

I did the opposite. I did a bunch of exploring in the unexpanded worlds so I could go through them and get all the moves before I try to complete any of them. Now that I have what is apparently the full moveset, I'll go for world completion.

Despite the average reviews i'm enjoying it as much as i thought i would. Don't even have any complaints besides the first arcade game being a bit crap. Whether or not it'll end up topping kazooie and tooie for me remains to be seen but it's definitely up there. I guess this type of game is just an aquired taste these days but i hope it sells well in spite of the lukewarm reception.

Just sat down for a good couple of hours going through the glacier world and its expansion to boot.

Honestly despite some rough spots this really does feel exactly like advertised, it's more banjo for the modern era, not as strong as kazooie but it at least seems to be on track to meet Tooie and DK64 (the unofficial Banjo 1.5) at least, assuming it doesn't fall off a cliff.
Icymetric palace was a bit too long for my liking but the rest of the world was stellar, really scratched that exploration collectathon itch.

I'm seeing some gripes regarding the dialogue but it really doesn't seem like anything outisde the norm, especially when you factor in Tooie that was already ripping on its own game structure, shortcomings and so on.

I can't believe this game is actually making me use my brain rather than holding my hand every single time I encounter a puzzle. There's a ton of backtracking and memorization required as well. God, how I've missed this genre.

Anyone have any tips for the Kartos challenges? Managed to do the first two without much issue, but World 3 and 4 are giving me issues. Ridiculous gem requirements coupled with frustrating controls that seem to require you to master the course. Trouble is, retrying any of the courses is a pain in the butt, requiring you to either finish the course or die. And then you have to sift through a conversation before you're given the option to try again. It's maddening.

This is the kind of stuff that makes the game un-fun. Kartos is officially the worst part of this game, hands down.

This is me. This game has ripped me away entirely from Persona 5 and I never expected that to happen. Have put an insane amount of time into it the last few days(got an early code as a backer).

Yea Kartos sucks. World 3 isn't so bad as you can pretty much circle the track on different lanes to get the required tokens before choosing to finish it off. Still takes practice and memorization to avoid not getting hit as much, but there are far more coins on this stage than required, so just avoid the one path that ends the stage until you have the requirement met.

World 4 Kartos. Fuck World 4 Kartos. Spent an entire 2.5 hour podcast doing that one challenge(plus boss directly following...also bullshit). You really need to be nearly perfect to get the required 150 coins, comparative to the leniency of the prior worlds. Not much to say other than memorize when to speed and slow to grab as many gems while avoiding damage. The track is the same, so you just have to learn it to succeed. One of my least favorite sections of the game easily.

Is there a trick to beating this cloud in a race? It seems particularly unforgiving if you accidentally miss a butterfly, and there are times when there doesn't even seem to be one around.

Come back after Trowzer gives you the last free move.

You can actually get that much earlier. All you need is
the high jump.

Is there a trick to beating this cloud in a race? It seems particularly unforgiving if you accidentally miss a butterfly, and there are times when there doesn't even seem to be one around.

Nope. If you're having trouble you could always come back after getting a few power enhancers.

One of the things I love about it the most!!!! I'm currently playing Horizon, and started Yooka last night. I'm going back to Yooka first tonite since it's got it's hooks in me deep!!!

This game is easily a 9 for me!!

I stopped caring, it's their loss. If people want to put that much stock in reviewer opinions so be it.

Not really. There is a move later in the game that helps slightly, and there is a tonic that lessens the amount of gas used between butterflies that can help(not to mention holding off until you extend your power bar also is a huge advantage). But really, you just need to get those flies if you choose to do it ahead of those...

There was 1 or 2 spots where id always miss a butterfly, I just exited the roll and grabbed it real quick.

Curious if any Physical US backers got it yet? Still waiting for mine to come and I am unsure if there is anyway to check if it was shipped and track it.

Oh well

I was hoping there was a Turbo Trainers type unlock that was required, but I guess they just expect you to buckle down and do it.

There's some oddly challenging parts of this game that I don't remember Kazooie having (Tooie certainly had them)

I stopped caring, it's their loss. If people want to put that much stock in reviewer opinions so be it.

I have no problem with people taking a reviewer's opinion as gospel as long as it only affects them. But there are people spouting that nonsense all over the internet, their minds made up that this must be a bad game because of what the reviewer they like said, then going on to tell everyone else how bad the game they never played is.

Hopefully they go back and patch some of the ridiculous requirements for the Retrox and Kartos mini games. That's the advantage of making a modern day 3D platformer; they can actually fix things post release!

I'm enjoying the game, but I don't understand how the mini games made it into the final release, especially the Retrox ones. Definitely brought the review scores down too. Luckily you don't need to 100% the paigies to finish, right?

When I saw pre-release footage of people at events playing the first Kartos run, I thought to myself "Man those players suck!".

But now, I totally get it. It's not that the players sucked, it's that the controls are rigid and unresponsive, the hitboxes are dogshit, the camera angles are also dogshit, and the layout is poorly designed.

It's the complete opposite of minecart levels in Tropical Freeze. It's just not fun.
