Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

Hoooooly shit the
truck
platforming sections in world two are awful. I've made jumps in Dark Souls that were easier to pull off.

Hopefully they go back and patch some of the ridiculous requirements for the Retrox and Kartos mini games. That's the advantage of making a modern day 3D platformer; they can actually fix things post release!

Yeah those are definitely my least favorite parts of the game so far. Finicky controls and the gem requirements for Kartos get insane later on.

Curious if any Physical US backers got it yet? Still waiting for mine to come and I am unsure if there is anyway to check if it was shipped and track it.

I still haven't received mine either. It's funny to me how this seems to be such a common issue among Kickstarter projects. I've only backed a couple of games but in each instance the game has always released to the public before I got my copy/key for the game.

Here's something I noticed that makes it a whole lot easier, the platforms are rigged in such a way you'll often just be able to move straight onto them without jumping.

Is that true? Dang, I had no idea. Apologies then. Been on somewhat of a blackout until the Switch version but I suppose if I really wanted to enforce a self blackout I shouldn't be checking the OT!
Shovel Knight also randomly appears in the options as one of the talking heads, which is doubly damning there as the game itself is inclined to spoil you.

I was under the impression they don't turn up as menu heads until you meet them, but I'm just assuming as such.

Shovel Knight has the best garbled grunts in the game so far.

He was one of my pause menu heads at the beginning of World 1. :P
Haven't met him yet, don't even know where.
Same happened for me, met him after seeing him as a talking head in the pause menu. That they'd include cameos there ended up the bigger surprise!

Yea Kartos sucks. World 3 isn't so bad as you can pretty much circle the track on different lanes to get the required tokens before choosing to finish it off. Still takes practice and memorization to avoid not getting hit as much, but there are far more coins on this stage than required, so just avoid the one path that ends the stage until you have the requirement met.

World 4 Kartos. Fuck World 4 Kartos. Spent an entire 2.5 hour podcast doing that one challenge(plus boss directly following...also bullshit). You really need to be nearly perfect to get the required 150 coins, comparative to the leniency of the prior worlds. Not much to say other than memorize when to speed and slow to grab as many gems while avoiding damage. The track is the same, so you just have to learn it to succeed. One of my least favorite sections of the game easily.

Ugh. I figured memorization and practice were the only ways to do it. Frustrating that the process of practicing and memorizing is such a chore. With something that relies so heavily on trial and error, it's pretty essential that the retry process be the least annoying part. All it does is inspire rage.

You just have to reach the world a character appears in for them to show up on the pause menu.

Yeah I tried that but didn't think it made it any easier really. Doesn't help that it doesn't totally stop when you release the analogue stick, and it requires a little turning circle to spin around. Topped off with the fact that the whole thing takes place over water so you have to go right back to the transformation station to try again makes it even more frustrating.

Got it done in the end but it wasn't very fun.

I've not been able to play much of the game, but managed to snag this screencap when i first booted the game.

Stop looking at me like that, Yooka. Laylee also sneaking a look at what isn't there.

fuck that first boss. what cunt though that was going to be fun?

Felt the boss was fine really. They could have littered a few stationary logs on ramps en route up the mountain that forced the player to learn how to properly jump them though. Too many won't realize that you don't slip down the slope in ball form allowing for high vertical jumps if slow or near stationary.

I played a bit of this so far, and I'm not really having fun. Which is a shame, I backed the hell out of it and was really looking forward to it. Probably just gonna play other stuff for now. The controls don't feel like they have the right 'weight' for a 3d platformer if that makes sense.

I think I just helped the villain of the next Playtonic game in World 5. Also, nice to see the Rare tradition of having a totally out of place, conventionally attractive human woman in the midst of numerous talking animals is alive and well.

Yeah, I noticed the designers for this game don't know of the various tricks and techniques other developers use to teach players the gameplay mechanics or whether a location is important or not. One example is the use of shadows in the game; instead of having an important path well lit and having out of the way scenery darkly lit, everything is lit randomly according to the world lighting model, so it's tough for the player to understand and parse the routes and locations within each world.

I think that character will be the protagonist not the villain.

Go go
Jet Force Gemini
spiritual successor.

Got to the 3rd World last night. I did most of the 2nd world but could find the thingy you need in order to transform. Also, it's dumb that you get a move that lets you
"absorb" the element of things you lick at yet you can't lick the torches placed around everywhere.
How do you burn the big blocks of ice that are everywhere?

The 2nd boss was easy but dear lord, the developers put absolutely no effort into it. Such a lazy movement pattern. Holy fuck, it looks like something a flash game would resort to.

3rd world has a really cool design. The top-down maze with the moving walls is really janky.

Is there some trick to rolling the seeds in the swamp? Do I have to transform into something or get another move? Right now it just seems super frustrating, trying to roll the seed and having the character going to either side around it, instead of moving it forward and the wind isn't helping.

What do you do with small glowing things?

Lick it

Yeah, I thought she was an aggressor but based on the guy at the strength test, it seems like they're the bad guys. I'm ready for intergalactic adventures!

How on earth do I hit that moving switch in the Shovel Knight challenge?

You know you can go in to first person mode to aim, right? Click in the left stick.

That's one thing I think the game does poorly. They don't tell you about the first person aiming until you leave the first world and head back towards the entrance of the hub.

Don't know if it's known yet or not, but do you get anything for collecting all of the pagies etc?

You get a new skin for Yooka. It
gives him a pair of shorts since people were complaining that he was naked when the game was first revealed.

The skin carries over into new games so you could do a second playthrough with it.

Game is decent after getting back to it after I raged at the Rextro/Kartus shit last night. There are a lot of hyper questionable design decisions but the game is fun enough I suppose. I think it's better if I just run through all five worlds as fast as possible to get the movesets then start actually collecting everything because the game does such a bad job at telling/showing you what kind of moves you need to get certain paigies.

No I had no idea I could go into first person mode. Twenty minutes I just wasted there.
