Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I recall someone in this thread saying the minecart challenge in World 4 took them 2 and a half hours or something like that. I think it's a bit ridiculous if it takes you more than 20 minutes or so. The boss is a little tricky at first but can easily be dealt with after you get the hang of his attacks.

Also, I transformed into the transformation in World 4 and all the walls/floors disappeared, leaving me with a grey void full of the objects in the level. This game desperately needed more polish.

I think I have a bug. In Moodymaze how do you drop the seeds to plant? I used thr air attack on the 2 ones below and it worked, but I can't for the life of me do the same with the one on the top floor. Tried licking it too, nothing happens.

For some asinine reason you can do your jumping attack on the first two seeds but the third one will only fall if you use your sonar. Must be glitched.

I feel all reviews have merit if they explain their points well enough. Jim's review brought up some good points, but his final score was a big 'what?'. I mean, 2/10 should be reserved for Sonic 2006 type a game, something that is fundamentally broken and buggy.

So, I disagree with 'the reviews are wrong!' stance. I love Breath of the Wild, but I wouldn't call it the 'best game ever!'. But I won't say that anyone who feels that way is wrong.

Also, this is a problem with all games, not just YL. A game is either the 'best of all time' or 'it's a flaming piece of shit'. A game isn't allowed to be just average or good, it's either one extreme or the other.
Jim and other reviewers were playing an older build of the game that had worse performance, even more camera issues, and probably more bugs. It's also possible that he was just unlucky enough to run into extreme bugs more often; once did a Kartos section that broke at the ending, and required me to enter the hub, someone above described an entire level disappearing, and there are several other rare issues which could have happened.

Currently watching a friend of mine play this game (he's also a fellow Gaffer!) and I have to say the second world looks pretty amazing. I've seen some people here hate it, but I just don't even understand why anybody would.

I was sort of skeptical of this game at first. The first world didn't really impress me all that much, but the second world just blows it away. I remember some people saying the first world is the best world and that the later worlds suck. That's probably bullshit. Although I haven't seen the other worlds yet, the second world is already way better than the first.

The people saying this is basically Banjo Threeie are correct, and it's probably the closest thing to Banjo Threeie we'll ever get......

Lol first try. I tried the top of the stationary part but just slid off, the bottom worked. Weird design, unless it was to troll people then yea it worked.

I think theres a bit of trolling, also a refererence to a similar area in BK? Or your supposed to wait till you have an extra move to get over it.

Performance issues can only go so far. If someone doesn't like the gameplay of the game, no amount of technical fixes will changed that. This was actually mentioned on the Gamexplain discussion review about the game. Well they admit that the game plays better, it wouldn't change their final score. Also, most of the problems were on consoles, not the PC.

My PS4 Pro is arriving soon. I don't have any games yet, waiting on Crash Bandicoot Trilogy. I wonder if I should pick this up on PS4 or wait for the Switch version. How are PS4 owners finding it in terms of performance?

I'm thus far enjoying the added challenge rolling on ice presents compared to the first world. Also, you guys weren't kidding about Kartos, second world run was a big leap from the first world. I liked the level of challenge it was at but can see it frustrating people if it gets increasingly difficult in later worlds. I always enjoy snow worlds and I dig the music here as well. I am surprised that I haven't stumbled on a snowman hat yet with the running around I've done thus far considering how many seem to be missing one haha Must either be hidden in caves or in the castle as I haven't expanded the world yet and focused more on the stuff outside the caves this time. One more day of work and then I can put a proper dent in this game at last. I'm pretty eager to check out the Casino world!

It's not your place to add weight to your opinion, especially when failing to understand what a representative sample is.

State what you think and let others aggregate opinions as they wish. "Adding more weight" to yours, by construction, is minimizing everyone else's.

Anyways, back to the game.

I do not believe you understand how an argument works, of course when debating a viewpoint I will add weight to mine. What an odd thing to say. It's not your place to tell me how to state my opinion. You are not a moderator and it is now you displaying condescending behavior. I question your understanding of the term if you don't see how opinions on these forums can be part of a representative sample of positive and or negative viewpoints of the over all opinion of the game but I imagine rather than you failing to understand the concept it is that I didn't provide "data" to support my statement and dictate it in this fashion.

For your information, I did exactly as you said. It was the other poster that refuted my opinion (which was fine) and I responded in kind which is where you came in. What a blanket statement to say I'm minimizing everyone else's opinions. In any case, enough with our discussion shitting up the thread. Back to discussing the game itself as you said. Apologies to everyone else in the thread.

So is there something you have to do first before
you can get Trowser to teach the flying move? I went into the Casino level to grab the moves then went back out and he isn't in the spot to teach the flying one. I guess I have to beat a section of the Casino first?

Haven't had any drops in performance yet, 30fps has held up though I'm only in World 2 but I believe it was stated the PS4 should be able to hold 30 while the Xbox will dip at times but rarely. PC at 60fps and the master race chants will never end :P

While your opinion is a valid one, it's also an outlier and very much in the minority.

You have no zero evidence for this. I also don't even know why you think it matters. So very dismissive and condescending

I'm sorry, that's just a completely counter-productive point to make.

It frames disagreement as a minority, a small exception to be dismissed. Let people state their opinions without trying to frame it within a context you don't have, please. It's condescending and dismissive, and you don't actually have the data to support it.

Positive posts on Reddit and GAF are not a representative sample, doubly so when you have posts like yours suppressing dissent.

Well said

Two questions!

In the icymetric castle, how do I redirect the light to open the frozen cagie?

Also could anyone give me just a slight hint where to find the third world?

Helpful hint for the mushroom seed pagie in World 3 if you're having trouble -
Lick 'em then drag 'em. This wasn't immediately evident to me and I kept rolling and pushing them and it wasn't until the very last one that I realized the best way to do it.

Archive room, in the hallway that leads to the 2nd book. You'll learn a move there that you can use in that same room to open the way

Ended up beating the game tonight. Final boss was a lot of fun, very Banjo-esque. I know quite a few people raved about World 5 and I agree, it's arguably the best in the game (I'd rank them 5-1-4-3-2). Music is great and everything of importance feels easy to reach.

Use your invisibility to redirect the beam, you'll see a thin laser line, turn around to hit the cage.

What the... Man I must have been blind when I went there. I saw the switch in the water and thought I'd have to return later.

Ah ok thanks. I don't have that ability yet, haha.

I thought I did all the icymetric castle, but don't remember a frozen cagie D:

Also, can I not force a save somehow? I found and delivered 5 hats to snowmen, and when I loaded up my game just now it didn't save any of that progress ;_; ugh

Yeah that is annoying, also be careful with Quills too.

But you can force a save, go into the options change something and back out.

Weird did my second big playthrough here and the camera got all wonky. I'm not sure what was going on.

Anyways this is still a fun game but I'm going to wait for the first big update to see how things improve before pressing further.

I think Worlds 4 and 5 are the best in the game since the former feels like an enclosed space and the latter creatively marries it's two concepts together. I was pretty disappointed in Worlds 1 and 2 since it felt like you were playing on giant floating islands (like old Playstation 1 games) instead of actual realized places.

So on a scale of Mighty No. 9 to Undertale how good did this game turn out? I'm thinking of picking this up after I'm done with Persona 5.

It's a much better game than MN9, but it's still got its issues. The game more or less delivers on what it set out to do, but it's very rough around the edges at times. I'd give it a 6 or 7.

Anyone have concrete info on what Playtonic will be patching? I've heard a full orchestral score, but has there been any word about the Camera or shitty controls in the mini-games? Or Pro support?

The only bug I had so far is the camera getting locked in a state where I can't raise it above a certain level. Very annoying, but it's fixed when you enter the hub and go back into a book.

Other than that, I'm loving the game so far! Really everything I wanted out of a Banjo revival.

I'm missing one quill and one token (the things you trade in for Pagies) in the Casino world. Anyone got any ideas?

For the tokens, I already got the one on top of the flag as well as the one(s) under the ramp that raises up.

Edit: Found the feather. It was behind some plants next to the golf course. Still have no clue where the last token is.

Anyone playing the PC version?

I have a 1060 and the game runs fine at 60fps/1080p an the "fantastic setting" but there are random microstutters. There are also stutters when entering or exiting rooms, like in the Icemetric Palace. Also, most of the time i do the high jump thing, 90% of the time the animation looks stuttery.

Seems like RTSS doesn't fix these issues after all. I also tried disabling/enabling vsync in the Nvidia or game settings.

The game runs smooth 99% of the time but these stutters make it look janky.

Anyone know? I feel like its glitched for me or something, honestly can't figure out why he isn't showing up

He does not move, he will teach you his move in the very same position as the last one.

Jim and other reviewers were playing an older build of the game that had worse performance, even more camera issues, and probably more bugs. That was absolutely not the point of Jim's review, it was the datedness and the horrible level design that gets worse as you play; even going so far as pushing world 3 under the bus when compared to 1 & 2.

So on a scale of Mighty No. 9 to Undertale how good did this game turn out? I'm thinking of picking this up after I'm done with Persona 5.
The most fun I've had with a game since 2013, so I guess - outside the scale?

This is turning out to be everything I hoped for!

The 3rd world is very cool. The level music has been on point so far. I already hum every tune, haha.

Slowly I realize I'm playing Banjo Threeie.

I had terrible stuttering until I ran it in exclusive mode. Vsync and triple buffering through the GPU control panel. Buttery smooth now.

Though my stuttering seems more severe than yours so maybe a different issue

Played a few more hours, done a big chunk of the marsh level, and continue to enjoy it. For all the complaints that this is just a nostalgia fest, I actually feel like they've added an awful lot of new play mechanics, eg. the switching between underwater walking and swimming - some of the puzzles here are quite creative and not something I've seen in other games.

However, I think in general the difficulty level is a bit too high, and this only emphasises how unrefined the controls are. For instance, the marsh boss, Trev (the northern bloke having a cup of tea while he watches the soaps - hilarious stuff). When it gets to the point where you have to wade around doing multiple jumps, it becomes very frustrating when you don't get the jump press timing exactly right. They should either tone down the difficulty, or make the controls a bit more forgiving and give some leeway on the timing. I think I spent an hour trying to beat that boss, and it seriously made me wonder whether the game was a worthwhile use of time as a result.

At the very least, offer varying difficulty levels, for those who don't want a crazy challenge. A lot of us, especially those who are BK fans and now adults with commitments, don't have as much time for games as it is. A challenge is good, but not to the point that it's frustrating and time-wasting.

I had a weird time with this game. It started off kind of lukewarm for me, then I warmed up to it, and then when I hit World 4 it was all downhill from there.

What I enjoyed: the music, the Icymetric Palace, unlocking some of the abilities (I especially liked the execution of the underwater one), some of the well-done puzzles

What I didn't enjoy: the camera, the controls, the non-obvious entrances to a couple of the worlds, the boss fights*, the arcade games, the cart racing, the dialogue sounds, the Pagie requirement for the final boss door, the quizzes (unskippable slow dialogue means failing near the end instantly turns an otherwise forgivably bland part of the game into an unforgivable slog)

*
World 3 was the closest I came to enjoying one of the boss fights. World's 1 and 5 were some of the worst boss fights I've ever seen. World 4's boss being locked behind a cart racing requirement, while somewhat logical, was still a bad idea, and it should have been separately accessible. The final boss could have been pretty cool if there were either health drops or checkpoints, but sadly there are neither, and it was just frustrating having to restart it a couple times after dying near the end.

I guess it was worth the ~$15 I spent on the Kickstarter, but I don't think it's a great game and I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

He does not move, he will teach you his move in the very same position as the last one.

He does move lol, just like he moves everytime he teaches you a new free move. In the hub, he's over near the cameras you have to get past to get to the Cashino tome when he teaches you camo cloak. When he teaches you Flappy Flight, he moves over to where the toxic goo is where you have to use the ability to get to the Galleon Galaxy tome.

Anyways, I figured it out. You have to get at least one pagie in Capital Cashino for him to move. The reason I was confused is because I traded my tokens for a pagie before getting off the other night but for whatever reason it didn't save so it said I had zero pagies, so I had to go back and buy one before Trowzer would move.

I feel like with some significant nipping and tucking this game would be elevated to an easy 9 out of 10.

Slightly smaller worlds (can significantly cut a ton of the open space), no mini-games, reworked quizzes, a little more polish on the controls.

That's the majority of what was needed IMO. I'm still having a pretty great time with it!

Sorry to hear you had such problems with the boss. What phase do you mean btw? The one where the tentacle tries to attack you from above? I did him on my first try, maybe you did something wrong!? I really enjoyed the fight, too. Not a bad boss at all.

I have to disagree a bit about the controls. I think they are mostly more responsive than in the old Banjo games. I can move around the world with such ease that just controlling these guys is fun in itself.

Two things I'd like to see in the next game:

- Being able to jump into the roll move
- Jumping from slippery surfaces
- Bigger regular enemies

Apart from these nitpicks they are on the right track :)

Oh come on. Seriously?

In the US a trolley is a short, slow-speed open-air train. I haven't seen this quiz question so maybe it can be gathered by context and the fact that many of the characters are shopping carts, but I have never heard the word "trolley" being used to describe a shopping cart.

Granted my world traveling has only been to Spanish-speaking countries.

I cannot help but feel very disappointed. Before I go on a rant, a few notes.

Despite loving banjo 1, I only ever got about halfway through it due to time constraints. Gonna go finish it after finishing yooka laylee.

I never played banjo tooie, will go play it after finishing one.

I donated $5 to this game, my name is in the credits, I donated because I grew up playing crash and spyro, and imo banjo is pretty similar to spyro, and the spyro games are absolute magic to me. Spyro 3 is in my top 10 favorite games of all time, and what little I played of the first banjo a mere two years ago for the first time, recaptured most of spyro's magic to me.

I have only made it to the ice world thus far.

Okay, so, this game basically feels like it's shoved up its own ass. Constant jokes reminding me these people made banjo 20 years ago, and constant references to the nintendo 64. The devs feel like they are stuck in the past.

My main complaint though, is that the worlds feel too big and... err... clunkily designed. Part of what makes banjo and spyro awesome, is that the levels were somewhat large for the time, but more focused. Only took 5 minutes to learn where everything was in a given level, and every corner of every level was packed with objectives, and collectibles. Keeping the player constantly engaged. I played the first level in yooka laylee for about 3 hours last night. This morning when I continued, I felt lost. Where the eff was that pig I found last night? I feel lost a lot, and disengaged with the game a lot, constantly pausing to go skim neogaf on my PS4. I'm usually engrossed in these types of games. Another thing is it feels like it takes way too long to navigate these far too large levels.

Yooka feels way too loose to me, I feel like he reacts too quickly at just light presses of the analog stick. There's a platforming challenge in this ice world that is giving me hassle and I feel like its due to the loose controls. Spyro and Banjo control much more tightly and weighted.

Some of the dialogue comes off as trolling from the devs, like Laylee saying
looks like they blew the boss budget.
Really playtonic? It's like they themselves knew this game was gonna be subpar and decided to make fun of that via the characters in-game. Just feels trollish.

Also, is it just me or does this game only save when getting a collectable? This is getting annoying.

Oh and that bloody quiz was asking me questions about things I hadn't even experienced yet. How is this okay in a non-linear game?

And, lastly, this hubworld is bollocks. That is all.

I get lost all the time too. I kinda like it though - feels like there's more to discover and I get better at navigating the more I play. That's exactly what I want from a 3D platforming world.

Yooka feels way too loose to me, I feel like he reacts too quickly at just light presses of the analog stick

I don't think you mean loose. It's very responsive. Almost too sensitive while rolling. I had that issue to begin with but had mastered it by the first boss who really pushes you to learn the rolling controls (especially the turning arc). I understand why he controls that way too, almost drifting when rolling - if you roll in a circle you can see why it controls that way.

Also, the low-key humour and lame jokes are great! Some people need to chill when they play light hearted games.
