Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I went to give the game another shot after getting so dizzy during my first try. There was no save, which was the first strange thing. Then I noticed I was getting dizzy just switching between the save slots LOL. I don't know what it is between me and this game. I hope I can play it someday.

So, many many pages back someone in this thread mentioned a character that had potential to feature in Playtonic's next game, more specifically as a villain IIRC. Who is it?

Huh. And here I thought it was just some tangential Jet Force Gemini reference.

It's probably both. We know Playtonic wants to do a big connected MCU style universe and she's the only character in this game that feels like they could star in their own game. I really want a new game like JFG so I'm hoping that this means we're getting one.

How did JFG sell in relation to other Rare releases on N64? Do we have decent data on that? Not that sales alone are an indicator of whether a game would or should be made, just curious.

I figured it could be her. I think she could be really awesome as the protagonist of a JFG successor. Not sure if Playtonic would want to make such a game, but they have hinted in the past the possibility of Y-L's NPCs getting their own games.

I like her design. Steve Mayles did a great job in this game.

It broke one million. 1.16 to be exact. There's an official list out there, but I'm too lazy to find it now.

At least his designs are memorable. I think in some dimension this is the pinnacle of modern character design:

I really hope something JFG related is the next game! Please. JFG is another game that aged REALLY bad in some regards but is still awesome if you can tolerate the jank.

:D Btw, as mixed as your feelings are on the game, what did you think of that planetoid/moon drama before the boss fight in world 5? I laugfhed so hard but also couldn't believe what just happened.

I've been avoiding using a guide with this game, but I think I might spoil the abilities you unlock if only so I don't get stuck in an area without knowing what to do and finding out I need an ability from another level or something before I can continue.

Banjo Kazooie is probably my favorite game of all time, but I used the guide that came in Nintendo Power (across 2 issues I think) all the time.

I love the lumpy little half melted snowmen in world 2. Their design cracks me up. Steve Mayles really did nail the character design, as one would expect.

The one thing that bugged me with this game was after world 2, you don't get any extra abilities in the expanded part of the worlds. But I could have sworn Trowzer saying find me in the expanded worlds as well early on. So I kept looking and looking through some of the later worlds, trying to get a specific ability but not really paying attention to the level that much, with the intention to resume my progress in early levels.

Ended up almost finishing the third world after expansion (well, the feathers, not the pagies) looking everywhere for him before saying fuck it and hitting a guide to find trowser...nope not in the expansion of world 3, 4 or 5, just 1 and 2.

Minor complaint I guess, but it could have been clearer, unless I misunderstood.

I plan on playing this again when I've 100%'d it. I think it will be fun, especially now that I know the layout of the maps. I've still got a long way to go though and I'm nearly 15 hours in.

I started out getting so confused with the layout even in Hivory Towers but the more I played it the more it all made sense, and they've got quite smart shortcuts to unlock too. I can jump between levels 1-4 really easily now. The entrances are actually a lot closer than it seemed at first.

Also, I like the Casino! Just unlocked it yesterday and thought it looked great! I think they must have added to it or something (I never watched the pre-release casino footage people were complaining about) because it looks good. Love the guy who gives you pagies for tokens :)

Holy shit trying to get the high score on Bee bop is so fucking annoying. Why did they decide to give a power bar for everytime you want to attack. Why can't I just quickly re start without having to go back to Rex each time ARGHH

If you are having problem with this miningame (I liked it, actually) maybe this helps:

When you attack and there are more than one or two dudes on the platform just ATTACK > use control stick to slightly move the bee above the next target and IMMEDIATELY ATTACK again. You can take out 4 targets within 1-2 seconds. Just press attack and once it lands DON'T use the "boost" button but just attack instead while slightly adjusting your position.

I felt divided too. It's kind of funny but a tad too corny for a Banjo-like game. I think it would be right at home in a Conker successor. The battle itself was not very good. But I really liked that world overall.

I have no patience for games like this where you can't fast forward conversations. That whole intro of over 5 minutes and not being able to skip all those annoying sounds was almost unbearable. Visually the game looks pretty good but a little too childish overall. Refunded my money.

...Ok!

If he doesn't have the patience for a short intro then it's probably best he refunded the game.

It's the sort of game you chill out with, not to get adrenaline and frags.

-btw I played through a lot of the game now and the voices haven't bugged me once. I turned down the sound effect and voices two notches down at the start and never even thought about it again till now.

As someone who likes to 100% a world before moving on to the next one, yes, this is a good idea. I'm only one world 3 but there are a few things that definitely can't be done with this approach.

You guys have way more patience than I do, could never 100% any world. Too annoyed with the mini arcade games and Kartos crap. I got 100 Pagies, defeated the main boss, and uninstalled. I had fun but too many annoying little things that should have been caught and rectified in playtesting. I never even got to experience one of the bosses because it requires doing
Kartos
first :(.

Friend of mine ragequit during the W4 boss fight, and needed 50 minutes on the Kartos sequence. He also complained about the 'almost impossible to beat' Rextro highscore in W4.

Long story short, I managed the Kartos ride on second try, and W4 boss on fourth. I beat the highscore (only found out later ofc) in my first W4 Rextro run and scored an even higher score for the pagie.

I don't consider myself a good 'gamer'. This is not a stealth brag. I just cannot fathom how anyone could deem these sequences too hard.

Just goes to show that you shouldn't blindly trust other people's 'reviews' or opinions.

I literally had the same amount of retries on these. Kartos was hard but it wasn't impossible.

That world 4 kart/boss is the first actual challenge in the game imo. Kartos took me like 10 tries and the boss another couple.

I liked that boss fight too.

I think a lot of negative reactions to this game is being spoiled by modern games. Like how people refer to games as being "Nintendo hard" but in the 80s it was standard fare. We get softer as gamers as the medium progresses. I'm by no means a hardcore difficulty whore but I mean this game is no harder than Tooie.

So how's everybody liking it? Just finished Persona 5 so I'll be starting this up soon. Seems a lot of people aren't fans of the level design which is a shame.

Missing one last Pagie in Moodymaze Marsh, any hints? I got all 200 Quills, by the way.

Try the underwater area, a pipe you can enter leads to a room with a ramp and a glass window to shatter by rolling. You probably got here before earning that move but forgot to return and fo the pagie challenge.

Yeesh.
World 4 is just dreadful.

Aside from being creatively bankrupt, it's just a mass of slot machines and other dumb microgames.

Yeah, I was enjoying the game for the most part up until the fourth world, and dreadful is a pretty apt description of it.

I'll probably hammer through it just to see world 5.

This is stupid. Your experience isn't more valid than that of someone who struggled with these parts. I did the Rextro world 5 challenge on my first try, and obliterated the high score. There is a poster in this thread who tried and tried again and couldn't get it. Doesn't mean I can belittle him for having a different experience than me.

All of the mini games drive me up the fucking wall

I only played it for around 3 hours but the first impression was really good, aside from technical issues that prevent me from continuing at the moment. It plays and feels very much like the old N64 platformers. The worlds (or first world, anyway) are huge

any idea when we can expect the next patch? I want to play more : /

It's a solid 8/10 IMO. Worlds 3 and 5 are the big standouts but I think all of them are fun.

Picked this game up. Loved Banjo Kazooie and Tooie when I was a kid. The instant I heard the main menu theme, I was hooked. The visuals, music, gameplay and characters I love so much. Laylee has no chill haha. She's a savage. Played for about 4 hours and have got 187/200 quills and 21/25 pagies on the first world expanded. Have no clue where the other stuff is so I'll probably have to look it up.

What was the control minigame people were having a problem with? Because the arcade racing game wasn't too bad for me. I kept trying to do the bridge shortcut but kept failing, so went the long way in both the runs.

Heh, I guess I'm not the only one. I thought I may have just been feeling sick yesterday, but my first time playing Yooka-Laylee I had to turn it off from how awful it was making me feel.

I don't know if it's the camera or something with framepacing or what, but on my PS4 Pro I'm just getting MASSIVE headaches and nausea/dizziness when I try to play.

And I have NEVER had this happen at this level in any type of video game. I had some minor headaches one other time in some weird RPG in the early PS2 days, but that's it.

This is absolutely bizarre and this (at least this level of it) is a really awkward first for me. I don't know if I can play this game, at least on my PS4 Pro.

I think it's the combination of a fast camera that you reposition all the time and busy detailed worlds that you constantly scan for collectibles

High 8/10 from me. It's an impressive effort by the new studio and I applaud them for everything they achieved. I also like the level design, actually...There are definite highlights and some little missteps in that regard but that's to be expected. Yooka Laylee is a nice bag full of surprises. :)

Biggest bponus points to me are the controls. They feel so natural and precise. Just as I remember it from the old games. I can hop betweens logs, beams and platforms that are only a few inches wide without any problems. Haven't felt that level of control for a loooooooooong time in games. Talking modern platformers – I vastly prefer it to the much too floaty nature of Mario in Mario 3D World. I can't even realiably jump on a Goomba in 3 out of 5 cases in that game, haha.

No belittling going on in my post, please keep your projections to yourself. You're literally the one calling my statement stupid. I said it goes to show reviews have limited usefulness.

Is there a memory leak on the PC version?

I noticed that it microstutters more often in some areas if you play the game for a few hours. After i restart the game, the microstutters clear up for a while until they come back later on.
