Looks pretty good, I would have liked to see more sprite detail and atleast some use of polygons. :(

I keep hearing that this game is incredibly fun, anyone on GAF can confirm that?

I got to play a whole whack load of DS games, and I have to be honest - this would justify the purchase of a DS on its own in my books. In terms of game design or even "wow, cool" factor, the game is great. I played the only level available on the demo over and over. Very interesting play mechanics.

Even if this game only had two levels I would buy it. To me it has a similar replay value to something like MGS3 or RE4 (based on the demo).

and they said the NGage had a tall screen.....

Still, looks good. When is it out? I've got four games for DS now, so I'm calming down post-launch. But this looks like a sure-fire bet.

Looks great! Like a real sequel to Yoshi's Island.

EDIT: Just saw Anihawk's post above, took the words outta my mouth.

That actually looks really good...better than I remember from previous screens. Looks like it could be some sort of a sequel to Yoshi's Island too. If it's anything close to YI in terms of greatness, consider me interested. :D

finally a new mario game, errr yoshi game, whatever. This is going to rock! Brought back yoshi's islands memories.

oh it was x-mas 94 or 95 when I got Yoshi's island :)

I recall this being one of the tech demos Nintendo showing off in the summer and hoping it would be a full fledged game, so this is really good news indeed.

But still, where the hell is that air hockey game?!?!?!

What could we expect as far as sprite detail? It looks in the style of Yoshi's Island but with more shades of color to make it seem... rounder.

Thats wierd. I had a nightmare recently where I was playing a game called Yoshi's Story on the N64. Piece of shit it was. I was really looking forward to it, too. Luckily I woke up shortly afterwards.

Not only are the visual themes similar to Yoshi's Island, but the title screen had the classic stork flying with the really great Yoshi's Island theme playing in the background (the opening theme). When you die, you're kidnapped by the same baddies as well.

The game is incredibly fun to play, and still challenging. It took a bunch of tries to pass the first level in the demo. It's really simple to understand, but challenging at the same time.

Looks like a failed attempt to mimic the graphics of Yoshi's Island. Still great to see an all new 2D platformer from Nintendo!

Something with the color palette and the artistic design overall looks really fucked up. Somebody else same opinion?
The gameplay itself looks ace, though.

Yes. If this was coming from any other company it would look mediorce. I know it'll play great, but why couldn't they at least match the visuals of Yoshi's Island?

To me it looks great. The difference with the color, imho, is that it's a bit better. The greens are a bit deeper and there's better gradiance in some of the color variations. I really like this look.

One question: Is this or isn't this a port of the original Yoshi's Island?

visual style is somewhere between yoshi's island and super mario world. looks alright.

i forget how this is supposed to play -- i know you toss eggs and draw clouds with the stylus, but do you also control yoshi's movement?

It's pretty cool. Basically the game involves a couple of simple rules. The big one is that you can draw clouds that will act as solid objects. The cool thing is that these clouds can even block off enemies. With this simple rule, you have your character move on their own and you draw clouds in order to guide them. One part has mario slowly falling from the sky and you make lines of clouds to steer him away from enemies. The other part has Yoshi carrying Mario on the ground and you have to make sure you draw bridges for him and what not.

The other cool thing is the interactivity of the drawing mechanics. The game recognizes if you draw a complete circle around an enemy and will turn them into a coin in a bubble. You can even grab that coin and "throw" it where it will drift appropriately. When riding Yoshi, you can tap the screen to aim an egg and fire. So to hit enemies or coins above, you tap where you think the proper shooting angle would be and Yoshi will fire an egg in that exact direction. It's so simple, yet so challenging and fun.

sounds cool. definitely the most promising ds game. so i guess yoshi automatically moves from left to right, while you draw bridges, deal with enemies, collect coins, etc.?

You got it. It's interesting too, because it feels like Yoshi's working with you hand-in-hand. When you draw a really steep slope, you see Yoshi working hard to try and climb it. If you just start a line of clouds up above the ground, he'll actually jump up on to it instead of walking forward mindlessly.

This looks good! On the DS i recall it looking incredibly vibrant.

The only thing this lacks as of right now is the incredibly varied and superbly animated enemies and big, beautiful boss fights of YI (which imo was what set the game leaps and bounds above everything else), but I hope that will be there when it comes out.

Only one game in my mind can top the beauty Yoshi's Island was on the SNES (not the GBA version) and that's the awesome Toejam & Earl 2.

But all Genesis/Megadrive games were ugly with their inferior muddy graphics, and tinny NES-quality sound. Let's just bash the system intead of embracing it through nostalgia.

Toejam and Earl 1 was much better.
I like 2D platfformers :) Perhaps T&E was a better game, but no doubt T&E2 is an awesome 2D platfformer and that's what I love from it.

We need more stylish 2D platfformers !!!!

Looks like they made the graphics and general look a bit less cluttered than Yoshi's Island to accomodate the drawing of many clouds and keep it clear. That's my guess.

So Nintendo took the style of the hand drawn art in Yoshi's Island and put it in the GBA, and made the game with sprites on the DS without YI art. They need to combine the two and make it whole again.

This is the first time we've seen Super Baby Mario in the game, right? Happy he's there, drawing those clouds quikcly to keep up with him should be awesome.

I hope the music is like Yoshi's Island. Such an amazing soundtrack.

God bless the Nintendo DS for bringing back Nintendo 2D platformers.

Buh? To me it seems more like
Super Mario World/Yoshi's Island -> Yoshi's Touch & Go
Yoshi's Story -> Yoshi's Universal Gravitation
