Fanboys and haters.

Right now there has been a lot of talk about fanboys lately and an equal amount of talk about haters. Now I got the idea for this thread, when someone made a comment how Nintendo is so popular when it's such a mediocre company.
Most of the people responded simply ' Nintendo is popular because people like it, accept it and piss off ' however it did give me a moment's reflection. That moment of reflection then spawned this poll.

My thought was (I'm going to use Nintendo as an example because currently it really best example) 'How come there is so much flack about fanboys when there are so much more haters?' Let me rephrase that:

Whenever people talk about how annoying and obnoxious Nintendo fanboys are (I saw a poster about this in another thread), always whining about how great Nintendo is and that you should only ever play Nintendo. I always find myself wondering where these idiot fanboys are. Because whenever I surf the threads I never see any posts like that, in fact more often it's about Xbox. However one thing I do see a lot of is obnoxious and frankly juvenile attempts at starting flame wars usually starting by some Xbox optimist going onto a Nintendo based thread and spamming it with hatred an obvious trolling for something three posts before getting banned.
Meanwhile I'm being told that Nintendo fanboys do this but I never see it, in any thread I go onto.
(this now marks the end of using Nintendo as an example, as I'll probably warrant a few million responses all with the response of I'm wrong.)

Personally I feel that the concept of 'fanboy' needs a broader definition because most people who are accused of fanboyism are simply fans of the game. Meanwhile the people who really, really, Really, REALLY want everyone to know how much they hate (enter game title here) will make post after post, thread after thread, spam after spam and troll after troll and honestly it gets on my nerves.

But that's just my view of it... where do you stand in this. What is a bigger plague to the forums, fanboys or haters?

I rank them by contribution.

Fanboys will provide the following:
  • Game tips/guides
  • Community
  • Memes
  • Fan art
  • Cosplays
All of this in exchange for the negative of defending a game to death, no matter how bad it may be.

What do haters contribute in exchange? I need a list.

All I can think of are jokes, but that's still a ratio of 5:1.

Nintendo fanboys consider everyone who is not licking Nintendo's arsehole a hater.
But aside from that, haters have a better connection to reality than fanboys.

Cosplay is the biggest contribution, especially Tifa cosplay.

Fanboys since they financially support bad decisions by developers/publishers/platform holders, which steers the industry in even worse directions (see horse armor DLC and $80 games).

I mean fanboys are really just another kind of hater, because their love is so strong they'll go to bat attacking someone in the defense of that often corpo until their last breath.

Suppose I am more annoyed by the fanboys now because they guzzled down the mediocre content until we got full-blown slop today from some of the bigger studios. Fanboys will buy the dumb dlc, will defend $80 games, and war over platforms despite platforms being more similar now than ever.

Fanboys are annoying but toxic negativity is always worse than toxic positivity.

The recent threads for Switch 2 where people are bound to be celebrating a new platform is the perfect example of haters pissing on the parade, Its beyond obnoxious.

If its one or the other considering they usually come hand in hand, then.

Haters are far worse.

If you dont like a thing, disengage from it.
Fanboys are expressing their love of a thing, as long as they aint putting anyone down at the same time, let them have their fun.
If we are realistic especially in gaming, a fanboy of one thing is almost always a hater of its direct competitor.

Confelicity vs Schadenfreude.

The fact that Schadenfreude is a more known and studied phenomenon tells you that humans are inherently shit.

Fanboys are easier for me to ignore, especially if I am in a community where everyone is a fan of a thing. Haters who go into the fans places to do that one meme "STOP HAVING FUN!" are the ones that bring my piss to a boil. The Git Gud crowd is in second place for most annoying and unhelpful. The ones that jerk each other off over how they plat every fromsoft game, so I guess those fanboys are annoying. Like James Rolfe said in his Karate Kid review a long time ago: "The cold hard truth is that nobody cares, but you."

You are more than welcome not to interact with it, but it has always been a part of gaming communities and it is silly and stupid but we are here so

There is a difference between fans and fanboys. Fans are great, fanboys not.

If we have to separate fanboys from fans, then we also have to separate haters from critics, for this list:

Reflexion of the current state of the industry
objectivity
calling corporations out for bullshit they fabricate
mid-/long-term the change for the better

What's fair is fair.

To me fanboys and haters have always come across as too aggressive and too emotional since they've clearly invested so much of themselves into/against a brand/product that everything is either black or white.

I mean even if you shut someone down by being aggressive you usually lose more ground than you gain. Not only did you not change the mind of the one you had an disagreement with, but you most likely made onlookers think you're a retard and they'd possibly distance themselves from your point of view.

But at the end of the day I must say that fanboys are worse. I can relate to pure unadulterated hatered. ❤️ I can not even imagine how it is to be glassy-eyed brand lover.

Fans who focus on the positive aspects of something they love are great. I mean, seriously who doesn't like positive people? Well, besides the salty "Stop having fun!" folks of course.

I've had some of the most rewarding talks in OTs here. Like the Starfield OT for example, the early days were awesome. But I also had roughly 100 of those "Stop having fun!" people on ignore during the same time period.

So I guess haters get my vote here.

You can't blame fanboys for liking a thing. They are right
You can't blame haters for hating a thing. They are right

Hater is such a lame word used to describe anyone with a different opinion ... its even used when the majority dont like something. When someone say hater I immediately think of a 10 year old girl stomping her feets crying and saying "you hater boohoo"

Fanboys, easily, and of all stripes across the board.

I find them irksome enough that I immediately place someone on ignore if they fanboy about any one platform or engage in console wars. Absolutely moronic, double digit IQ people every single time.

Fanboyism can be both positively inclined and negatively inclined.
Haters are only ever negatively inclined.
But fanboys are often haters.

If you are more triggered by other people's happiness than people trying to tear others down, that says a lot about you.

Clearly the fanboys, because most of them are also haters.
This. Fanboys are always haters of something else. Anybody that feels or acts superior to someone else because of platform choice are scum fucks.

PCMR is the prime example of this. There is always a sense of superiority in their warring and I find it hilarious as somebody that has played on PC for a little over 2 decades. All platform warring has this superiority complex but the amount of "only retards would choose console over pc" and other bullshit where people are too fucking stupid to realize that not everybody cares about the same things is much higher on the PC vs console side.

The amount of disinformation about PC gaming from the console side doesn't compare as it's just stupid.

Fanboys chimp out against those who like the other console, especially after there's a article with bad news. Haters are critical of the company and their games, which is fine.

Fanboys, easily. It would be fine if it was all just shtick, but sadly some people live fanboy lives both on and off the internet.

Obviously a person can be both, but if I'm going to hang out with one person who is a fanboy or another person who is a hater then it will be the fanboy in most cases. If a guy just has a genuine corpomance with Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft for some reason then that's a bit cringe, but hey.....at least the guy found love. :messenger_smiling_hearts:

Haters tend to come off as more asshole-ish to me. The worst of the worse, though, are the bipolar fanboy/hater. One company is God, the other is the devil. Those follks....

Anyone that takes PCMR more seriously than they should has missed the joke, which is... unfortunate.

Never understood fanboyism. Or more to the point, how anyone can lack the self awareness to think their opinion is fact.
