Imagine you are a studio executive, and your company just shelled out 100 million for Fantastic Four ... then you go see The Incredibles.

There wouldn't be a building tall enough for you to fling yourself off of.

They should re-release YOU DYING. :D

And how on earth could they have spent 100 million on a movie that looks that bad in stills? Was it all blown on Jessica Alba's booty-enhancing cream?

it is funny how nobody gives pixar any shit for the incredibles being a near total rip of the fatastic four.

Well, the mom is stretchy as opposed to the dad, the daughter has the invisible woman powers not the mom, and the dad is super strong, not some third wheel guy! It all works out! And there's no fire guy, and the evil genius wasn't horribly disfigured, so there!

At the end of the film you find that the baby has Johnny Storm's powers. Plus, it had the cameo by Mole Man. The Dad is super strong, ala The Thing, just not disfigured. I mean, if you can't tell that the Incredibles is a rip off of the Fantastic Four, then.. I don't know what to tell you.

I guess people will excuse something for blatenly ripping off something else's source material as long as the movie is good.

Personally, I think they should have cut about 20 to 30 minutes of the film. I see the Incredibles as an homage to the Fantastic Four.

Strap on your hooker ...
the Incredibles is more of a parody of superhero comics/movies.. than a rip-off of fantastic 4 or other comics.
...while that may be true, it obviously draws a decidedly large amount from FF cast-wise.

Not that it's the first thing to do that, it seems the FF is the team of choice for superhero lampooning. Off the top of my head, Batman Beyond and Venture Bros. both had episodes with characters that were FF 'homages', and there's been plenty others. It seems practically every comic in existence has done a mock version of that first FF comic cover, even Mutts has.

those who say the FF sucks obviously never read John Byrne's or Mark Waid's fantasic runs (pun intended). Some of the finest comics ever written.

edit - but yeah, the movie is going to suck. and we all forgive the Incredibles for "Stealing" the FF because

1) it was a great movie
2) it respected the source material
3) is a hell of a lot better than probably any FF movie we will ever get

Brad Bird explained the reason for their superpowers. From Brad Bird himself

"The movie was trying to explore family archetypes through superpowers. The dad is always expected in the family to be strong, so I made him strong. The moms are always pulled in a million different directions, so I had her stretch like taffy. Teenagers, particularly teenage girls, are insecure and defensive, so I made her turn invisible and turn on shields. And ten-year-old boys are hyperactive energy balls. Babies are unrealized potential. So I was trying to play with archetypes."

And this works for the movie as a whole.
Like when Mr. Incredible says, "you stay here!" when he goes to fight the robot at the end. Then Elastagirl stops him and starts yelling "why do you have to go alone? You're my husband!". And Mr. Incredible says "I'm not strong enough!". Elastagirl responds "Is this some training excercise for you? Is that it, some macho thing??". Incredible breaks down then "No... no.. I'm not... strong enough. I can't... I can't lose you again". Added amazing depth to the character right there, and shows even Incredible can't match the exectations of parents sometimes.

Trust me, Brad Bird is a respectable guy, and an amazing storyteller. I don't think he decided, "steall FF's powers, guranteed success!". Their powers are just very basic superpowers in the superhero genre as a whole.

As an FF fan, even I can easily not lose any sleep over the similarities between the fantastic four and the incredibles. I'll even go as far as saying that the Incredibles is much more than simply a homage to the fantastic four. The Incredibles is the great Fantastic Four movie that will never be made simply because Avi Arad (or whoever has the say so at Marvel) will never be able to hire someone as talented and as perfect as Brad Bird to tell the story of a superhero family.
