The Rules: List one tell-tale sign of fleeting fame, and then give 2 or more supporting examples.

....when the name of your big hit is also the name of your band.
"(In a) Big Country" by Big Country
"Living in a Box" by Living in a Box

....when your first big hit is actually just a cover version of someone else's big hit.
"Blue Monday" by Orgy
"Come on Eileen" by Save Ferris
"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm

....when your hit song is based around a dance, or spawns a new kind of dance.
"Macarena" by Los Del Rio
"Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus
"Electric Slide" by whoever the hell sang that
"The Locomotion" actually spawned 2 one-hit wonders (the original singer and Kylie Minogue)

Kylie from the 80's is dead. The new one is some kind of robot, designed to look like a recently divorced and skanked out 45-year-old.

Don't forget "Safety Dance."

I don't think you can accurately judge when a band is gonna be a one hit wonder (who would've thought the makers of such first hits as Click Click Boom and Down with the Sickness would've kept making hits?). The thing that interests me are one album wonders. How did the band somehow come together and make a great album and have NO ability to do it again? How did they suddenly get musical talent for a few months, and just lose it later?

I think there was, and I'm not positive, but I believed it involved looking at your hands.

When your song is for a Levis commercial...

I can't stand either the original version or Orgy's cover of "Blue Monday", but I think "Stiches" by Orgy is a fantastic song. I don't know if it qualified as a hit, but it did get some radio play and had a pretty cool video to boot..

Alien Ant Farm had another hit too.
So did KC and the Sunshine Band, but that doesn't stop people from calling them a one hit wonder band too.

Not to mention this is a cover of ANOTHER one hit wonder band (Dexy's Midnight Runners).

Alien Ant Farm's other single/video was "The Movies", but I don't think it really charted at all (other than getting some obligatory MTV support). It was actually a re-issue since it flopped the first time they released it. After "Smooth Criminal" was a hit they tried to get it going again.

...when your first (and only) album is called after your band/your hit song
...when your hit song is the first track on your first album

(There are so many examples, do I need to list some?)
