You ever hear these words? Did you recognize them as an attempt to brainwash you the second you heard them?

I think it’s important now more than ever to be aware of this, because when people are scared they are more susceptible to manipulation. And it’s just as important to recognize that when someone says this, it’s usually just empty words.

Let’s take a look at the aviation industry for a case in point. A couple years ago, pilots around the world were told that they had to accept the gradual mechanization of the cockpit. Soon only one pilot would be needed to oversee what was essentially an entirely computerized operation, and eventually we would all just have airplanes that flew themselves. Boeing took a step in this direction by putting an anti-stall software into their newest airplanes that takes control in emergencies, without feeling the need to inform pilots of its existence. The result: two 737 MAX planes crash killing everyone aboard, Boeing’s name is smeared in mud, and the plane is put out of operation.

Or take for instance the claim that academia inevitably will move to online instruction. Well, the Covid situation has certainly shown that this doesn’t go over well with students. It turns out that when you take the socialization aspect out of education (you know, sex and partying), young students feel less motivated! Right now schools are struggling to keep students from dropping out or deferring their studies, message boards are packed with angry students wanting to get back to campus, and a massive loss of income is expected as a result.

Making something seem inevitable certainly sounds more convincing than someone just telling you what to do.

You must accept it GAF: we’re never going to shake hands like before. There’s going to be a lot less hugging. Things are going to permanently change. Really? Keep in mind this is a message that’s telling you how things should be, not how they will be. The future is yours alone to mold, and don’t let any clown tell you otherwise!

I think people who are there mostly for sex and partying should not be there in first place. Those who actually want an education will stay. Win-win.

I have a friend who very much lives in the moment, and considers me to be very much stuck in my ways.

He's a 30 year old vegan man who makes under $18 an hour, creates TikTok videos for his 2,000 Twitter followers, has no interest in pop culture older than a decade, and claims to hate capitalism yet always has some trendy new Nikes on while saying things like, "It's impossible to be racist against white people." He's the exact kind of dope who insists I "accept the future" and adapt. Dude is a 30 year old trend hopper: if he weren't the most kindhearted and generous guy I knew, I swear I would've cut him off ages ago. Also, he does a mean Peter Griffin impression. That always helps.

I think this is the future to some degree. The same way 9/11 occuring started the snowball of surveillance laws, control of information under the guise of safety, this whole COVID situation is going to result in the new future. I see it impacting surveillance even further and people just changing basic day to day interactions. After a few years, I don't see customer limits in stores, distancing won't be a big thing. When there is a vaccine, things will be back to relative normalcy.

It's certainly a dismissive and shallow way of trying to claim smug superiority, along with it's similarly time based sibling phrases, "it's [current year]" and 'I'm on the right side of history/You're on the wrong side of history".

It's a way of sounding correct without having to back up your arguement.

It should be no wonder it's employed primarily by those who have no real understanding of the word, history or human nature.

Bend reality to your will, OP.

When you understand that you are in absolute control of yourself, that's exactly what you have the power to do.

I couldn't agree more. If anyone should be able to understand the future, it would be a historian. But I've only ever heard historians say that it's impossible to predict the future based on knowledge of the past.

I doubt lockdowns will last for 6 more weeks. These states like California that are getting power happy are going to have a real problem on their hands. Eventually the need for normalcy and socializing will be more powerful than fear of sickness.

When they taught us French in school and we hated it becuse it was pointless for 99% of kids.

"The UK has joined the EU and you'll need to learn French becuse everyone will be speaking it"

Merde...
