It was weird reading that story after having seen the movies just to see the source. I was like, wait, what the hell is going on here?
I mean, the comic story is cool, but at the same time I feel the movie motivation works better for a cinematic epic. I mean, one could look at it this way if we compared movie villains if they had done the comic motivation:
Star Wars villain: a mastermind with nearly unmatchable powers and a disciple hoping to lure his son to his side so he can overthrow said mastermind
Terminator villain: an AI that has determined itself superior to humanity and wishes to eradicate them
Predator villain: an alien species that excels in combat and utilizes technology above ours and aims to hunt those of us who it seems worthy of the hunt
Avengers villain: dude gains godlike powers purely because he can’t take a hint that she‘s just not into him
Like, the comic motivation just doesn’t feel like it works with a decade of films building up this guy and that’s what he’s essentially doing. Like, MAYBE if they had established Death as a character before IW as well, but I dunno. In one of the Age of Ultron trailers, there was a shot of an unknown woman standing in a cave, and one of the many theories by fans regarding her identity was Death. Then, not only did she not appear in the movie, but it turns out she was just part of the weird imagery Thor saw in the cave water and not meant to be anyone particular. Whoever edited that trailer was being a sly bastard.
