Your favorite space shooters

I don't know what's wrong with me but lately I just can't get enough of kickass space shooters. It started with me going back to old games like gradius 3 and r-type, grew exponentially when I discovered all the kickass freeware shooters from the likes of kenta cho, team shanhai alice, and hikoza'n chi x, and has been growing steadily with the arcade shooters I've been playing lately.

What are your favorite space(/scrolling) shooters?

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (360)
- It's serious business.

Mars Matrix (ARC/DC)
- My favorite SHMUP of all time. I simply love everything about it.

Gradius II (NES)
- Probably a nostalgic pick more than anything. Love that music.

Axelay.

Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Border Down, and Thunderforce series also fun but if I could only choose one, I'd pick Axelay in an instant. Shanghai Alice shooters are ok, but I don't know. It's too standard for me :/

I have never played an R Type or Gradius game.. although I have known they existed ever since about the time when I bought my SNES.

Would Ikaruga style games count? Those kind of things had me go back and discover the likes of Galaxian / Galaga ... I still suck at twitch arcade games

I confess, coming into the thread I thought I was gonna get to talk about X Wing VS Tie Fighter or X Wing Alliance :p

Games like ikruga count.

Ikaruga - it's almost a perfect game, something that defines video games as an art (just like Tetris).
Parodius - I remember buying the Game Boy version at a flea market as a child because of the crazy boxart. :D
Why hasn't there been a sequel this generation. :(

Right now...Geometry Wars. I've gotten up to 270k, but I don't own a 360 :(.

Honestly...that game is so simple but so addictive. It's my #1 reason for wanting a 360, which really should say something cosidering I was planning on waiting for a couple years to pick one up. Microtransactions FTW in this case. :)

Other shooters I love - G-Darius, Gradius V (the others as well), Ikaruga, 1942/43, R-Types, and a few others.

Geometry Wars Evolved.

I don't know if I've ever had this much fun with a shooter.

Also, Mars Matrix. That's pretty much it.

What up JRP. Still playing Gradius V and loving it...still haven't finished it. Soon.

Axelay was one of my favorite SNES games. I never did finish it on hard though. I also remember enjoying UN Squadron a lot when I first got my SNES way back when.

I've been a fan of Gradius for a long time, but I actually didn't play the first one until last year, when I snagged a really cheap copy off Ebay. It was short but fun.

Ikaruga is pretty maddening to me at the moment, but I've barely played it compared to most other shooters. I've played various R-Types, but none of them really felt as fun as Gradius. Although I really want to check out R-Type Delta, after reading various GAFfers sing its praises. Also plan on picking up Einhander soon.

Lots of the oft-mentioned import games around here (Dodonpachi Doukamajaklikaharathingamajig) I've never even played.

Oh yeah, played the absolute crap outta Galaga and Xevious on NES.

Definately.

If I had to pick, I'd go with Radiant Silvergun & Ikaruga as my "thinking man's" #1, and Dodonpachi dai-ou-jou for my manic shooter #1.

Some other space shooters I like:

Axelay (SNES)
Gradius III (SNES)
Gradius Gaiden (PS1)
Super Aleste/Space Megaforce (SNES)
Batsugun (ARC)
Thunder Force III & IV (SG)
Dangun Feveron (ARC)
Psyvariar Revision (ARC)
Gate/Lords of Thunder (TG16)
Blazing Lasers (TG16)
Truxton (ARC)
R-Type III (SNES)
Galaga `88 (ARC)
Air Buster (ARC)
Ordyne (ARC)

These aren't space shooters, but I enjoy 'em all the same:

Pop'n Twinbee (SNES)
Espgaluda (ARC)
UN Squadron (ARC)
Esp.Ra.De (ARC)
Dragon Blaze (ARC)
Sengoku Blade (ARC)
Progear no Arashi (ARC)
Parodius series (various)
Mushihimesama (ARC)
Guwange (ARC)

While the most challenging or genre bending Raiden (arcade) and Mars Matrix have always been my favorites of the genre.

arbitrary improvised top 5!

1. battle garegga
2. donpachi
3. r type
4. layer section
5. thunder force iv

DoDonPachi is king.

Mars Matrix and Gradius V (probably) chill around it.

Ikaruga put me into a coma.

I'd still love to one-credit-clear a shmup.

This thread started me thinking about Katakis, the old and awesome R-Type rip-off on Amiga. Then I did some searching and found an old scan from German gaming magazine Power-Play.

Here's one of the reviewers from the review of the game:

After inspiration of this topic just finished Gradius 3 for the first time. On easy though. On Hard I can't even get past the first part.

But what does the last guy say in the end anyway?

And you inspired me to go back and play it. I forgot how good the music was in level 5 (the jungle stage), and the Continue screen has some beautiful music, too.

in no specific order:

Dodonpachi (can play this all day)
Dangun Feveron
Radiant Silvergun (for the level and boss design)
Border Down (always kicks my ass + has great music)
Soukyogurentai

BTW Chaosfield and Trizeal are not so hot.

Yay, Parsec! Played it all the time on that crappy old TI-99 my dad borrowed from work.

As for Katakis, wasn't it made by Factor 5? There's a reference to it in Turrican 2 anyway.

So is Chaos Field supposed to be any good?

I didn't like it. It's just a seris of boss fights which doesn't really appeal to me in a shooter. If you wan't something to get your teeth into then it might be worth picking up, but I found it insanely difficult to get good at. With games like Ikaruga, Border Down or Psyvariar I felt like I was learning a little more each time I played. With Chaos Field I just got my ass kicked over and over and didn't get very far in the process. Hated the soundtrack too.

Some personal favorites:

Vertical -

Blazing Lazers (TG-16)
Super Star Soldier (TG-16)
Soldier Blade (TG-16)

Horizontal -

Gradius Gaiden (import Playstation)
Thunder Force III (Genesis)
Blazing Star (Neo Geo)
