Your favourite romhack/mod.

I love romhacks and mods.
Not only because they can expand and add unique content, but also because they usually fix faulty mechanics or add in QoL features missing from the game that were already established long before in other games. Some might even rival modern games, in my opinion.

With this thread I'll share some of my favourites and hope some of you will enjoy them. I also hope to encounter some great ones I have never played before.

These will be in random order:

Pokémon radical red.
I think this one is well known. If you like Pokémon, this is the rommest of hacks.
Superb QoL additions, buffs for weaker Pokémon just to give them a bit of an edge, buffs to attacks, abilities, trainers, bosses and even completely new Pokémon.

My favourite part is minimal grinding mode. No need to waste time bothering with EVs and IVs. Not that I hate the system, I think it's great but comically time consuming.
There is so much customisation and team building that the replayability is just about endless.
Also, it's tough. You need to know your Pokémon if you want to try this. And there's even a hard mode on top of that.
As a bonus, there's Pokémon emerald imperium, which is radical red but for Emerald.

I might even not recommend this one because if you play this, you'll be missing the additions in nearly every other hack. It is really that good.

Final fantasy 8 ragnarok mod.
Ff8 with a sorely needed upgrade. Triple triad is still great, just not so broken anymore.
Party members have a bit more of a role stat wise, zell being a strength powerhouse, quistis having the best magic and Irvine the highest speed for example. GFs have been adjusted so some abilities are learned earlier and not rendered nearly useless, as well as new ones added.
The difficulty has been adjusted so no more level scaling. Enemies have improved AI, new moves and buffed stats. There are even some secret bosses. This sounds like a difficulty mod, but if you're well acquainted with the game, the challenge is nice and not too hard. I've beaten It on level one so it's absolutely doable. If you like FF8, you must play this.

Breath of fire 3 hard rebalanced.
Absolute classic. This one is a hard hack as the name implies, but definitely not as ridiculous as another I've seen which just puts enemies and bosses on steroids and leaves you with nothing.

Here, equipment and masters have all been adjusted, and also the stats and level up stats of every character.
Garr can be a good mage, Rei is still squishy but with better intelligence, improved dodge and critical hit rate and the highest death resistance. Nina has the best Int and good elemental resistance. Momo is kind of allround but has good resistances against nearly everything. Ryu is a lord of all trades which is good as he's always mandatory. Everyone also has added abilities, such as peco having a shield type buff and garr his own version of might.

But even with all these changes, it is still possible to build the way you want. Masters have different stat allocations now, and none of them sport negative bonuses anymore. You may still very well turn Nina into a tank, or peco into a mage if you so wish.
I'm playing this right now nearing the end, and the challenge is top notch. Everyone is useful and it's a lot of fun to strategize.

Golden sun reloaded
This game is already such a game by itself.
This hack makes it even more of a game.
Even in the base game it's fantastic messing around with classes and how to use djinn in battle.
This hack sports new classes, abilities, upgraded enemies and bosses. It's definitely tougher than the original, and a lot of fun.
Best part is that it has a hack for the sequel The lost age as well, with all added benefits.

It's been a while since I played, already having played through it twice. But I can easily see myself doing another playthrough soon. There really is a lot of customisation, and the music is beautiful.

FF6 T-Edition
I only recently found out about this one.

There is so much stuff packed in here it's a miracle it doesn't explode. Lots of fantastic music from other games, characters buffed so no one is useless.
Mog's dance not being locked to dancing the whole battle, Umaro not being in constant rage but still having the ability to be that. And my favourite Cyan is now very much viable.
Equipment upgrades, ability enhancements, side quests, extra dungeons bosses enemies everything! This is absolutely another Rom of the hack.

Bonus: robopon 2 ring version 0xos version

Oh boi. This game. It is such a weird and crappy game. Good chance some have never even played it, and that's understandable. But I still like it, I've known it a long time and it has a place in my heart.

This game is not very good, and sorely needs this hack. As the name would suggest, it's kind of a Pokémon game, but mechanically very different.
The battles are always a maximum of 4 vs 4.
Some encounters have less but you may always bring 4.
You use batteries to spark robopon, no catching.
Robopon can equip parts which hare weapons, and software which are magic skills. Most robopon also learn software by themselves through leveling.
They all have oil types that hate or love each other, which is your AoE.
Robopon that are a certain oil type will always hate or love the same robopon, so this is useful for multi targeting enemies and allies alike, adding a bit of strategy for team building.
You may think "I'll just put the same types on my team for easier buffing", but this may backfire as the enemy can now also easily hit all your robopon.

This hack adds better spark combinations, changes some robopon stats and software learned and most importantly, fixes the atrocious EXP curve. It's definitely a lot more fun and bearable. Normally I'd say play the vanilla game first before adding any kind of mod/hack, but this is absolutely an exception. The base game is rough.

I hope you enjoy.
Thank you.

The people that translate obscure jap games for everyone to enjoy are the absolute MVPs.

But let's not forget about those that grab a game and make a whole new game out of it. Stuff like Fallout: London, Enderal, Archolos or Thief: The Black Parade gives you tons of hours of content and fun for the price of 0.

Blood - Death Wish, Extra Crispy
Another great example of that. Damn game has better level design than most FPS games out there.

RealRTCW - this one is one of my favorite mods, the amount of content this community gives to Return to Castle is mindblowing
Expanding Fronts mod for Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds
Anomaly for Stalker
The Bastard of Kosigan for Neverwinter Nights 1

The last one probably doesn't fit under that definition as it's more of a fan game on GZDoom engine, but anyhow, I really loved Blade of Agony and won't miss an opportunity to give it a shout out lol

So I'm guessing you fellas like shooters a lot!
Haha. I still have Quake one and half life I need to finish. Don't lynch me, I've played them a long time ago. But there's just lots of stuff that takes precedence...

Yes, translators are gods.
New Vegas is also one of my favourites but I didn't want to write a whole book here.. There's just too much! And it's 99 percent fantastic.

No hard feelings lmao, but yeah you got homework to do!

Make sure to check Arcane Dimensions once you are done with Quake.

Some real neat level design in there, both visually and layout-wise.

too many, but two off the top of my head:

- yearly Super Tecmo Bowl roster updates that I still download because it's still 1000% better than Madden

- this, because I'm amazed that they pulled off the yoshi movesets so well (don't know who this YTer is, just mute him)

I'm a sucker for SMW kaizo romhacks.

But arguably my favorite mod/hack of all time is Project M, the mod that gives SSB Brawl the physics and gameplay from Melee, and adds a ton of new characters and balance and stuff. It's awesome.

The only one i used was an og gameboy cartdridge with like 1008 (or 108) games, it had snowman bros, super mario land 2 and so many others...i think it had like a mini rubber button in the cartdridge to return to the selection game menu but my memory is foggy at best.

Not even sure if that is a romhack tbh.

Is a copy of thrill kill that never officialy came out a romhack?

Don't really do translation or game modifying hacks but I do enjoy a lot of texture / QoL mods like Moguri for FFIX, Seamless HD for OG Resident Evil 1/2/3.

I'm also diving into PCSX2 and DuckStation texture mods these days, apparently the new versions of Duckstation has made texture replacement a lot easier so there's some real nice texture overhaul mods for classics like Dino Crisis 1, 2, Parasite Eve 1, 2 etc.

This one's for my fellow boom-shoot bros.

Combines DOOM and Blood. You can play as either the Doom Guy or Caleb, each one with their signature weapons, and you go through levels inspired by both games, blending the cyber-horrors of DOOM with the grim aesthetics of Blood while adding new enemies that ofc are combinations of enemies from both games, like a Cacogargolye. Cool stuff.

I'd say thrill kill is just a game, it hasn't been adjusted it just never released.
I guess a romhack would be an official made game that has been altered/hacked by people who did not originally make the game.
Your gameboy cartridge with multiple games has standard games on it I assume. So it's a cartridge hack! Hahaa.

I absolutely agree, I love both. I'll never be able to play FF7 again without the ~50 gigs of uncompressed pre-rendered images. It's so disgustingly smooth you can slide across the screen. That's one downside that they can be huge.

But at very least I must recommend a randomiser for most of those games you mentioned. Not only is it great for replaying, it can be incredibly hilarious.
With resident evil 2 for example you can randomise a lot of things, even voice lines.

I'll tell you I was doing a run with everything randomised which was great chaos, but the cherry on top was the part after you return to "Leon" as "ada" in the sewer to throw the "club key". You'll get a call on the walkie talkie and while I don't remember what "Leon's" first line was, I do remember the reply being:
"eerrghh, eraaghh! AAAAARRGGHH!" Kendo's death scream had me completely broken it was so random.
