your sleeper hit of this gen?

right now i'm playing through freedom fighters again and this game is fucking awesome! great control, well designed levels, the music, although subtle and sparse, is perfect, and the game just 'feels' right. all in all a very fun game. i have to say its my sleeper hit of this gen. i'm surprised more people didn't rant and rave about...

out of curiousity, what is YOUR sleeper hit of this gen?

p.n.03

it had its fair share of problems, but i wont deny how much fun i had with it. played the game to death... will return to it soon.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. Pick it up, stores are practically giving it away.

Disgaea

I think there was a whole group of us gaffers that got taken into its world of amazement. When I got it I played 160 hours of it in a lazy summer week, that's like a record for any game ever. I didn't know what I was in for when I picked it up, I just thought "hey, I liked FFT, time for a strat-rpg".

Later I traded it for Valkyrie Profile, which I don't regret. However I planned to get it back some day... and then somehow my save was erased. Bummer, but I wasn't really upset, I'm pretty laid back and the sequel is coming out anyway.

I wish I could say DQ is a great sleeper hit, but it's more like a sleeper flop, commercially :\.

I think the best ones I can think of were already mentioned in the thead -- KD, Disgaea, Fire Emblem all didn't start out with much hype but after good word of mouth and slow-but-steady sales, ended up as quite successful games. Maybe DDS1, too? I'm not sure how that sold.

edit: wtf, how did I forget ICO?

LTD for Digital Devil Saga is about 45,000 copies, which is excellent for Atlus. I am truly shocked at how much it's already commanding on Ebay - I expected sealed copies to be worth $100 in years, not months.

Hmm, that IS pretty good! Sleeper hit it is, then :)

Personally, I preferred SMT III, but SMT III probably wasn't quite big enough to really be considered "a sleeper hit," I'd guess.

id have to say chronicles of riddick escape from butcher bay. i had heard NOTHING about it, no reviews (when i actually picked it up) and i hated the movie. i had some spare cash and the dude at eb reccomended it. im like yeah ok whatever. got home, and i realised about 2 hours into it i was playing one of the top 10 games of the gen. awesome, awesome game.

oh yeah, breath of fire 5. im about 1 hour into it, and i think it sux, does it get better later on?*

I guess none of the games I listed are sleepers, since they all failed miserably. Bah whatever.

Ico. I had hopes for it. I thought it looked great in screens. But there was doubt until I played the demo. All were erased at how fun, smooth, and beautiful it looked/played. From there, I was even more shocked by what a masterpiece the game was as a whole. I still gotta keep shutting my friend up about the ending. :lol
THEY'RE DEAD!

Hmm, the only game I've gotten that I had low expectations going into was Dragon Quest 8. I was really surprised by it.

But, I may be getting MGS3, Suikoden 3, and possibly Dragon Quarter (OMG DRAGONA AND KEEBLER) soon, so either of those may take it over for sleeper hit I guess.

Killer7/Radiata has been very good for me, and I never heard of either before I got them.

So those are underdog sleepers for me.

edit: oh i thought you meant this year. i'll think of more later.

I'd say...Pikmin 2

I didn't expect to be impressed by the game at all, and it really blew me away.

Freedom Fighters would be my second pic. I can't wait for a sequel.

Can someone please define "Sleeper Hit" to me? Because if the explaination on wikipedia is right 95% of the games listed here can't be called sleeper hits.

Yes you are right. Can somebody list a true list of sleeper hits?

i just took the thread as "your favorite game... that didnt sell well or isnt very popular but still is a good game which is why it's one of your favorites" type of thread.

For as much as I liked it I don't think that a game selling about 60k copies (especially when its publisher expected gozillions more to sell -> see the $1m contest for the first 500k buyers) could be called sleeper hit. Maybe sleeper, but not hit ;)

A fairly healthy chunk of the Dreamcast libary, including but not limited to...

D2(best orchestral score ever)
Gunbird 2(muy underrated)
Bangai-O
Toy Commander
Re-Volt
Every SNK game on the system

And the most recent one I would consider is Shadow of Rome. Which is really terrific, and yes I really dug the stealth sequences. Some people just got no patience.

Greatest Game Ever Created

Oh, agreed on this. Everything sounded insane in previews. Just amazingly ambitious. You always expect sacrifices when the game comes though. This one had none, and hooked me for the entire holidays. Or rather, the few days it took me to beat it. I became obsessed, and I was aware of it. One of those moments, where you wake up early to play it. Inbetween you have to turn it off for family gatherings and x-mas dinner. Then find yourself going to bed at 5am because you couldn't stop playing when you got back to it.
