Yourself!Fitness Impressions

Ok so being the versatile gamer that I am I decided to pick up the game for 34 bucks and give it a whorl (I was not alone, a little ninja I know bought it with me). Anyways at about 12AM last night I decide to pop it in.

Introduction
The introduction to this game is neat you get a 2 minute video of Maya your virtual trainer and she breaks down how she is going to improve your fitness lifestyle. The CG is some of the best I have seen, and the details in the hands are great, each finger moves fluidly.

Once the Intro is done you begin to create your Profile. First Maya asks you for your Weight and Height and tells you that the process will take roughly a half-hour, once that is complete she will ask you for your Heart rate to get a understanding of your body chemistry. Once she has that info she starts to get busy, you then have to do 2 minutes of Jumping jack in tune with the model displayed on the TV and each 30 seconds the difficulty will increase. THIS WAS CRAZY around 1:30 minutes, the model was lightning fast I just finished a cigarette, so here I am dying to a robot with crazy speed. After the 2 minutes were up I almost fell over, she’s like “ok now take your pulse again quickly before you calm down” I was like “Bitch wait a second”. After you tell her what your new heart beat is, Maya begins to ask you your fitness mentality and then tests your comfort level.

Here Maya asks you to perform as many squats as you can, 50 being the max. So I get to squatting as my friend begins to tell me how gay I am. Around 10 squats he joins in and says “I’m bored lets try this” so I reach 50 squats and I’m like well I can do 46 comfortlessly. After the squats Maya asks you to do as many crunches as you can, 60 being the max. So my friend and I now hit the floor. The model on the TV was moving so slow. My stomach was burning and my friend is like “oh this bitch game” we hit 60 and plug in the number, no sweat. After this Maya asks you to perform Push-ups, 50 being the max. Here I say, “oh fuck, here go 15 push-ups”, 17 push-ups later I collapses and my friend
Starts calling me “weak” as he continues to do 50 more; so I plug in 17 and move on. Now this bitch wants me to stretch “I’m like, I can barely wash my feet” so I stretch as far as I can and reach my calf’s and then start scrolling through the choices and see one picture where their head is to the calf’s I’m like “that isn’t me for sure” and select the correct model for me.

Once this is completed Maya gives you an evaluation. Here Maya proceeded to tell me in a nice way that I am Fat, I was like “Did this bitch just call me fat” My friend was on the floor for about a good 5 minutes. After her rude statement she lays out a workout schedule that fits my needs. According to Maya I have to work out 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week “Man that is rough”. After this she also shows me an eating schedule and displays the type of diet I should be eating. This is a cool feature, my friend and I learned how to make Boston crab cakes, Lemon Chicken, and how to buy Haagen-Dazs ice cream from the store (weak).

At this point she informs me that we have completed the profile process. I rush to have a smoke and get ready to do my first workout routine.

Graphics
The graphics in this game are above average. She is a little cute fitness chick and the backgrounds are similar to DOA3. And I tell you for the amount of time you will spend looking at this game it needs it.

Sound
The sound in this game, for the most part is generic. All songs are categorized with a theme, the themes include Dance, Hip-Hop, Eighties, Latin, and 2 other that are locked from the start. The game does not support Custom soundtracks due to the fact that Maya is based on a beat system that is synced up with the music provided. When you begin the game it’s funny because she starts twitching trying to sync up. Overall the music is good, as long as you don’t mind no name songs and the occasional cheesy cliché beat.

Gameplay
Ok now for this, (apparently) fat guy to get his workout on. Here you can select what equipment you own (Weights, Step, Ball, and Heart monitor). Along with this you can select your focus (Weight loss, Cardio, Upper body, core body, and lower body). For my first workout I selected Cardio and no equipment. Once I completed this you can choose what room you would like to play with Maya in (he…he). At the start there are only two level unlocked, the more you play the more levels unlock. So I select the Office scene. Once in game Maya begins to twitch as I stated earlier and then asks me how I’m feeling. Once the music starts Maya goes in to workout mode.

She starts us of with a 2 minute warm up and begins stepping side to side, here my friend says “ what the hell…. Man your neighbors must think we are soooo gay” I then miss a beat from laughing too hard. After stepping side to side we start front kicks, then back to side to side. Once the two minutes are up we take a short 15-second break then Maya kicks in again. Throughout the work Maya will say encouraging things like “let keep it pumping” and “only one more you can do it”. For the start of the workout we continue moving side to side, then she picks it up and has us hustle in and out, then back and forth for about 2 minutes. After this I’m getting winded again but feeling good. At this point Maya begins V-step workouts, this is something I have always hated but continued on, while my friend is off beat. After V-step we hustle in and out again then take a 10 sec break as instructed. Now we are 5 minutes in and she gets in to squat mode. Now if this chick was real I may have been turned on at this point, but luckily she was not. Here Maya instructs us to do 4-way squats on the Left leg, then the same with the Right, then tells us to begin jogging back and forth. After about 5 minutes of this I start screaming at the bitch “Ok miss I don’t get fatigued because I’m a damn computer” My friend falls down and I continue on. With 5 minutes remaining she now has us do Forward and Side Lunges on the Right Leg, then the Left. After 2 Minutes she begins to calm down and tell us to take a water break, then not only 15 seconds later she’s like “ok that was great now back to the excise” I’m like “Hey, I just got to the fridge, bitch”. So I run back and then begin to perform the stretching exercises. This was the best thing got to stand and relax, finally. Once the 3 minutes were done me and my friend were sweaty, pissed at Maya because she did not break a sweat, and ready for bed in a tired kind of way seeing as it was now 1AM.

Overall
I love the game. I felt great laughed my ass off and rocked out to some cheesy music. My opinion on the game would be a solid 8 and recommend it to anyone who is looking to get in shape and is a gamer. Yeah it is odd but it tells you that Videogames can be used in many different ways and gives people a new prospective on gaming. Now excuse me while I go for round two with Maya. If I see posts I will update the thread to reflect how I feel about the game down the line.

good stuff. You know i bet theres a big market out there for a game like this, beats the hell out of the exercise tapes housewives go crazy for.

Thanks for the impressions..

What was the dietry stuff about? Is it just "eat some protein" or does it actually tell you what to eat?

It's based on the calorie system. It informs you of what to Eat for Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner. It has a over 4,000 recipes. The food you eat is based on how many calories you are allowed. It did appear to be protein heavy tho.

Just wondering, are you fat?

Oh and I would pick this game up if it was for ps2/gamecube because i'm sorely out of shape (ddr is no fun alone). But amazingly i'm not fat and i've had the same weight the whole summer(which I need to drop).

Am I?

I remember when that fitness model tried to get everyone at the GA E3 lunch meet-up to go down the hall and attend the iFitness game presentation. Even she wasn't getting any takers. :D

Haha, you can see me browsing the forum there, with Andy looking over my shoulder.

Good impressions. I was talking to the manager at EB that M$ and sony will have to come out with more 'games' like this to get the next gen ready to be set-top boxes. Non-gamers are going to have to use the consoles to get the set top thing really going. The manager really didn't understand my point though.

Well I got this for the g/f based on the IGN review and my impressions are very similar - bloody top-notch presentation and attention to detail, the profiling seems accurate and the exercise and diet plans it generates seem practical and efficient.

I'm slowly getting Maya to teach me yoga. :)

For a laugh check out their forums at www.yourselffitness.com - some people are taking it VERY seriously - and why not? This is basically a personal trainer at a fraction of the price and is far better than any non-interactive exercise DVD.

Contemplating getting an exercise ball to expand my routine. :)
