Ys 6 Impressions

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
So I bought this game and played for like 2 hours... Keep in mind, I'm a fanboy for these games (I even liked 3!). I like it so far, definitely feeling the oldskool gameplay. Story seems pretty basic, (you wash up on an island with humanoids with tails and big ears, they think you Elusians, or humans from off the island, are evil but when you save one of the village chief's two nieces from a monster, they trust you more, etc...) but one thing that's cool is every character (at least in the first village) has their own portrait and voice acting. Voice acting isn't as horrible as you would believe (from like the IGN reviews), I think the VA that plays Shinra in FFX2 is in there for a few of the kids.

Controls are fast and responsive, it plays pretty much like a spiritual successor to the Mana games (although a lot faster). There are some basic combos you can use, it's no where near as deep as some of these "stylish action" genre games (Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc), but it works perfectly here. Getting to actually swing your sword is cool, and the rhythm in it reminds me a lot of the rhythm of attacking enemies in the earlier Ys games. Music is pretty good, but it sounds heavily synthesized - the boss theme is still kickass though. I'm sure I'll get to parts with better music, too, but so far it's not amazing.

Environments and graphics definitely get the job done - although it's kinda hard to make the detail out on the polygonal characters since the graphics seem rather zoomed out. There's also a bit of backtracking at the beginning of the game, but it makes for good experience building, so it's not so bad. My biggest complaint so far is that to get to the status screen, there's like a 2 or 3 second load - not bad, but would have preferred a menu appearing on the same screen instantaneously, like the other Ys games. Further impressions will come soon but I'm definitely enjoying it! Definitely worth the money!

I tried this out today at a store just for kicks...

I'm very disappointed in the PS2 version. First of all, the cheesy looking CG looks so akward and really doesn't fit the style of the game (and they took out the rocking original intro). Secondly, I don't really care for the voice overs. The original PC version had no voice acting at all, and as with most games with text only, I had my own ideas as to how the characters sounded. Needless to say, the voices chosen did not really match what I had expected.

I was also disappointed in the framerate. I was expecting 60 fps in the final game, but it only delivers 30. That high framerate was part of the reason why it felt so good to play. At least they kept the music in tact (at least during the game).

At least they brought another Ys game out in the US. I may eventually pick it up just to support Ys in the US...

CHEAT GET!

Here's the deal. You want the Japanese audio instead of the English track? You want to get rid of those cheesy CG cutscenes and add the anime scenes back into the game?

Well then have I got a deal for you!

For a limited time only, start a new game, go to the cheat room, and turn the cheat mode on by hitting Red, Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue, Yellow, and then down-thrust the center pedestal.

Now enter the following cheat, followed by another down-thrust on the center pedestal.
Yellow 2 hits, Red 4 hits, Blue 1 hit.

There you have it. Anime scenes and Japanese vocals. I am loving this game now...

BTW, the anime intro kicks SO MUCH ASS!

(credit for cheat discovery goes to sarah80 from the GameFAQs boards... thank you!)

Damn, last time I played it it was 60 fps. I guess they couldn't keep it constant and locked it lower. :/

cheat room?

I am assuming this was not in the "reviewable" copy of the game...

After choosing new game from the main menu, you can choose normal or hard difficulty, or cheat... which takes you to the cheat room.

Here are some more (again, thank you sarah80):

"For Clearflag cheat: This turns on all special features available after the game is passed once. These features are Nightmare Mode (Insanely hard mode I've heard), Time Attack (No clue what this is? Timed boss battles?!?!), and Red Spirit Monuments (After you reach
Port Rimorge you can warp from this point to Rehdan Village). Ok, here's the code finally... Red 4 hits, Blue 4 hits, Yellow 4 hits, Blue 2 hits, Yellow 2 hits, Red 2 hits, and then hit the center pedestal.

For Olha Hard JP (Olha demo after clearing Time Attack on hard in Japanese): Red 5 hits, Blue 3 hits, Yellow 1 hit, Red 1 hit, Blue 2 hits, Yellow
3 hits, and then hit the center pedestal."

actually, no, it's in there. you just have to remember, the last time i picked "new game" was almost 2 months ago. it's a bit hard to remember game menus offhand that long. =)

The trippy part is that I had no idea Konami was taking OUT the anime and replacing it with CG stuff. The CG just doesn't "fit" at all. I knew they were messing with the soundtrack, but I wasn't too bothered with that idea. The only people that stand a chance of being impressed with the CG are ones that pronounce it "Wyse". Anime/Ys fans are going to be disappointed, but at least the made it possible to put it back. So much wasted time and effort, though!

i can see why konami went to the effort, though. i mean, the original "anime" isn't really anime at all. it's mostly still artwork. the CG isn't bad, but i agree it doesn't really fit the flavor of the game. they probably should have just sprung for full-on anime, but i guess they figured the CG has broader appeal. i mean, it's not as if japanese people hate CG. or most gamers.

Maybe they just couldn't afford to go full anime? We know that Konami has inhouse CG teams that can farm out stuff for cheap. But everytime they had anime FMV, it was outsourced to Production IG or Gonzo. It could just be that they don't expect to make that much off this release to warrent going "all out".

Of all the Ys games I've played, I never did understand why they spelled it like so but chose to make the pronunciation that way. It seems a tad too akward. Then again, it's Japan, I should expect odd things. :lol

On that note, if anyone wants to see the original opening I can probably share it with ya'all =P.

I don't think they did the CG inhouse on Ys6. It's credited to a Chinese company that has worked on some Mario games, too. The animated movies of the original aren't really much more than edited stills, but I still think they're more exciting than what happened in CG.

The other thing that's weird is hearing Adol prounounced Japanese-style in English. Yes, it's closer to correct, but I got used to the long "A" of the TG versions...

The game is pretty simple fun. Definitely lets you know you're in the wrong area, when the first monster you see takes 0 damage and one-hits you for the kill. So far the only voice I absolutely loathe is Terra's, who definitely looks just like the girl from Chrono Cross:P Glad I traded in instead of purchased the game. I don't think I would've been happy paying 40 bones for a 20 bone quality game.

I hate when developers purposefully lock the 60 fps in favor of 30 fps (probably because it looks mor natural). There iz a cheat in Xenosaga to ante-up the framerate back to 60 fps (course you'll need a cheating device).

I hav yet to decide wether to buy this game or not. Would you guys say it's as fun as playing Lunar: Silver Star Story?

Whoa, are you serious? There is a 60 fps cheat for Xeno? That's awesome!

I wonder if there is also a 60 fps cheat for Ys (using the cheat menu), considering the other cheats available for the game...

THAT would rule!

It's nothing like Lunar and I'd say it's MUCH more fun (considering that I didn't find Lunar to be all that much fun in the first place...).

The 60 fps cheat in Xenosaga Epi.1 isn't exactly great. The developers unfortunately didn't adjust the speed to a natural 60 fps (like Metroid Prime), so everything iz just REALLY FAST. It's good for normal battles if you want to pave yer way quickly. Note that the cheat iz glitchy.

Oh, well that figures...

You can do that with most emulators as well. I can run any PSX or N64 game at 60 fps, for example, but they were timed to a lower framerate and end up running much too quickly...

Course it's not like Lunar, but since it's an old skool game, well, i say you could compare it that kinda taste. Lunar 1 be my 2nd favorite RPG... after FFVI.

Is the PSP version same as the PS2 version?

I just played the demo and thought it was pretty damn fun. Reminded me of Secret of Mana on speed. The voice overs though are atrocioius!

I've never played a Ys game before so I am a bit hesitant. I haven't seen much discussion on the game so I'm not sure if it is decent or not. This thread is split.

I caved in and decided to go buy it and damn EB didn't even have it!
This will be one of those games, won't it?

Is the PSP version still coming? Last I remember, it was originally supposed to come out first on PSP in Japan, and has since all but fallen off of release lists.

I went back and started over (I was around level 20ish) with the Anime and japanese voice cheat active.

It is well worth it. The english voice acting is terrible, and the CG is a joke. The real intro is 10x better then the CG one and comes at a much better place stylisticly.

konami never announced a date for the PSP version AFAIK. it's still listed on the japanese konami website, but there's no date specified:

対応機種:PSP
発売日:2005年春
translation: on sale spring 2005.

there's wallpapers and crap to d/l there, too:

No it uses chibi sprite based characters like the PC original and runs at 60fps.

At one point it was mentioned to be coming in January iirc.

uh, i wouldn't say that with such a tone of confirmation until we actually see what's confirmed to be the actual PSP version running on an actual PSP. =)
Sure. That's why I said 'hopefully' earlier. :)

I just put in about 4 hours into Ys 6. I have the demo, so I'm kinda surprised they took out the enemy death animations, they were bloody AND chunky. Then again, that kind of gore kinda clashed with the whole Ys vibe anyway, so I'm not exactly pissed. Just surprised.

That said, I can't believe how hideous the game is. The graphics and textures are just shockingly bad. I remember watching videos of the PC version about 2 years ago and thinking there were absolutely stunning (not complex, geometrically speaking, but very colorful and sharp.) By comparison (to my memory, at least), the PS2 version is muddy, dirty, and just awful.

Also wanted to say thanks to whoever posted the codes up above, after watching the default CG animations in stark disbelief, I inputted the code, and breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the soulless manequin characters replaced with the anime ones I expected to see, to begin with.

VERY pleased to note that the music mostly matches the OST I've been listening to for the past year and a half or so. Though, I think they changed Olha slightly. The flute or whatever it is just sounds so much better than it does in the OST. Everything else is perfect so far, musically speaking.

As for the gameplay, I've never played PC original, since it never came out here, but I own and have played through Ys I, II, III, and both versions of IV. I'm a complete Ys whore and from a gameplay perspective, it just might be my favorite of the bunch.

I only regret keeping it at the standard difficulty because it's pathetically easy so far. But g-d damn, am I having fun. This kind of APRG has just been lacking in recent years.

Looking forward to the PSP version as well, I really hope Konami brings it over. On-the-go ARPG without the hideous graphical changes (replacing the chibi sprites with these atrocious models, for one) well be most welcome.

I hope that next time Konami decides to localize a niche gem like this, they don't spend so much time fuckifying the graphics, cutscenes, and voice acting. Ah well. Despite the problems, I couldn't be happier.

Picked up Ys 6, It's really ugly, but pleasantly old-school. That said, it's hard jumping from Return To Arms 60fps high-poly multi-textured glory to Ys' Dreamcast-era visuals. And why the hell is it 30 fps? Did Falcom do the port themselves?

Having just come off Growlanser Generations, I can definitely say that there are tradeoffs with games that are mostly tile-ish 2D because of the way memory is used. In GG, the huge character portraits were spooled as needed into a buffer in high res and the characters in the game that were present most of the time and held in memory were significantly lower-res. After quite a bit of experimentation, this was the best tradeoff.

I think what happened in Ys VI PS2 is that first of all it was a mixed 2D/3D game and they put EmPHAsis on the small characters and not the character portraits. You get medium/low res character portraits and moderately high res sprite/characters. Personally, I think this is very backwards because the extra res makes little difference on the characters, but the lack of res looks AWFUL on the large character portraits (which should be very impressive, but instead elicit an "uh, why, god, why?!" from me when they come up).

how is it jumping from CRTA's boring-ass gameplay to something with a little variety? =)

KDEA did, supposedly.

That's annoying about the graphics, at least the gameplay seems intact. Lets hope the PSP version would turn out better.

I loved Ys I & II, wonder how this compares?

I absolutely LOVE how comboing the enemies vaguely sounds and FEELS like pulling off "dragging" combos in Ys 1 & II (and IV) when you used to bump into the sides of the enemies to hurt them.

Very cool.

Are the Trials that you can get to through the Wings of Alma new to the PS2 version? I ask because they feature music that isn't on the OST, which I had thought was supposed to be completed. I remember reading a rumor a long time ago that Konami was going to be adding new music and possibly new game content for this port. Any confirmation one way or the other? I got a very pleasant Landstalker vibe from the platforming in the first level of the trial.

i think so. they're not mentioned in the FAQ for the PC version on gamefaqs. and it seems to be very complete.

I figured. For the record, I believe the Trials are first accessible after opening the Fire Sword door in the underground island-connecting tunnels.

I accidentally warped to the Trial dungeon right before obtaining the Fire Sword, so I think they're accessible the minute you get the feather item.

Anyway, this game is a really pleasant suprise. I'm really glad we finally got another Ys game here in the states. When I found out the anime cutscenes and Japanese voices were included, I had to buy it. Very fun and nostalgic experience so far.

It's probably Konami's fugly graphics that make the Ys 6 engine choke. Not because they're technically demanding, or anything, it's just that the game is friggin' crying! :D
