Y's IX Coming to the West to PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC 2021

Been waiting for this news, hopefully Durante will be involved with the Switch port in some capacity.

Not even going to hope for 60fps, just a super rock solid 30fps and I'd say mission accomplished.

I'm still catching up on the party based Ys games, not sure that I like them better than the Adol-only stuff though. Up next is Lacrimosa of Dana though, which I hear is the best party based Ys, so I'm hopeful. Either way, I will buy this, but like Hawks Eclipse Hawks Eclipse said, I hope Durante is involved in the PC port.

I seem to have a hard time getting interested in this series. Is he not always shipwrecked? Lol. I mostly wonder about the stories. Gameplay seems solid on these?

More awesome news! Went with the Switch for portability reasons with 8 and will probably do the same with 9, unless there's some serious problems with the port.

I haven't played much of the partYs (heh, sorry) besides Celceta. Personal favourite is Ys Origin, though Adol's luck with the ladies is always nice to have haha.

I'm fairly certain Durante will be involved with the PC port at some point, just hoping he'll get to run his magic on the Switch port too; the Switch port of Lacrimosa isn't unplayable by any shot but I'm quite certain it's nowhere near as optimized as could be.

Edit: Here's an AMA he did about half a year ago.

And here's a reply of his with regards to Ys VIII:
I got a list of things from NISA, and I also had a list of my own of things I wanted to do.

Then I played the game for 100+ hours and came up with even more stuff to do.

Then our great beta testers came up with even more stuff.

And along the way I got it into my head that local coop needs to happen.

Worth noting, on NISA's YouTube channel, the description for the game's trailer contains the added text: "Coming first to PS4." Potentially not the best news for thoese intending to buy the game on PC or Switch, but, depending on the state of those ports, at least the PS4 release won't be held hostage.

My own interest in this particular Ys entry has cooled significantly, since its Japanese release. The planned 2021 release leaves me even less certain I'll bother with the game.

So tired of publishers and the double dipping mentality.

They are doing a great job at this. Game is made for PS4, so it's ok to bring first when they are still working on the ports for the rest.

But since the game launch on PS4 just next year, I hope they have something for PS5 too, maybe together with the pc version.

2021 is kinda far :/

Yeah the story is usually average JRPG stuff, some of the games have fun characters though so you can at least enjoy the moment to moment conversations.

Gameplay is superb though, absolutely worth playing for that alone if you like action RPGs.

Same here. I'll take Oath or Origins over any of the modern Ys games.
Lacrimosa is pretty good though. I can see why so many people went nuts over it.

9?! I bought 4 of them, but I've only played 1 properly. Finished 98% and looked up the ending because the final bit was being a pain. Might skip 2 and play Oath and whatever one I bought.

Or skip it all and read the story, because 9 games is a lot.

I can't comment too much other than to say that NIS learned their lesson from last time and they want these ports to be good.

Art direction looks as if it got a hit when compared to YS VIII.

The environments look very bland and colorless while certain elements like character hair are extremelly saturated. These don't mix well IMO. As much as i like Ys gameplay this looks like a very ugly game.

I still haven't made it really far into 8 yet other than just the shipwreck and running around trying to make it off the island and find survivors i'm guessing the story changes to something other than that.

I do love the darker, more gothic setting in this game. I don't know that I'd say the environments look worse so much as just different.

For those mentioning visuals, one of the complaints leveled against the game was its environments being somewhat dull and empty. From gameplay I've watched online, the game does appear to lack a certain degree of art direction and area composition.

Ys IX in 2021 and ToCS IV in October 2020 makes me a very happy Falcom fanboy.

The trailers on each respective platform's YT channels seem to be indicative of what to expect.

The Switch trailer says "Footage from development build. Subject to change.".

I'm assuming they simply capped the ingame footage at 30fps while keeping everything else like the transitions and overlay animations at 60fps.

The PS4 footage displays at 60fps though there are dips in certain sections.

At the very least, I'm glad they didn't simply upload 60fps PS4/PC footage and pass it off as Switch gameplay.

I really dislike it when official footage isn't representative of what the actual game will run like and this applies in the reverse direction too: if your game is 60fps, don't encode and upload trailers of it at 30fps please.
