Yeah, I edited, I figured that's the character you were using.

It's been a while since I used her, but I think you have to rush to the door on the west side and talk to the Roo. Give it a Roda Fruit and it will teach you the song.

That's the part that got me, I have no idea where to get the fruit. It's probably in a chest back in the 11th floor but I think I need to trigger something on that red fiery symbol on the floor.

Have you looked around in the area of the fiery symbol with the mask of eyes thing? If you put on that mask, you should see a bridge that will eventually lead you to a chest down below.

The Mantis might be the easiest boss I've encountered in a Ys game. I sat back, shot charged fireballs at him, and barely took any damage.

Enjoy doing it with the third character, with no long range attacks!

It's still easy.

It's the easiest boss in the game with that character, the fire magic does so much damage. I actually had trouble with Hugo.

You can skip FMVs after the first time you see them, it was a new feature for the Steam version I think. Just press confirm.

Is there any way to get off my power shot more consistently with the 360 controller? I can do it pretty easily with my mouse, but I can only get it off occasionally with the 360 pad. I can't get the hang of this game with KB/M so I'd really like to just play with my 360 pad.

EDIT: Never mind! I got the hang of it! :)

Anyways, completely new to the Ys series, is there anything I should keep an eye out regarding secret areas/chests/bosses/loot?

Explore and find every chest you can. Missing a cleria ore to upgrade your weapon or a piece of armor can make bosses a lot harder than they should be.

Level also makes a huge difference, one level can take a boss from extremely challenging to beatable.

I just found out you could use teleport.... I feel so fucking stupid. (On floor 21.) All that backtracking.... the game is like 100 times more enjoyable now.

Doesn't an NPC mention that to you when they give you the crystal thing after you kill the enemies at the beginning of the game? While they're talking about the save points, I think. How do you miss that :lol

Actually, I remember reading something about it, just didn't pay attention to it, for some reason I figured it'd be some automatic thing.. hehe :(

The mantis boss was always troublesome for me, because everytime I've gotten to him (with each character), I've only done damage per hit (so like, 8 per attack?) I usually end up grinding a level or two in order to do more than 1 damage >.>

Completed the game today, final boss was a bit of a pain since I accidentally wasted that revive thing. Really enjoyable for the most part, looking forward to starting Felghana next.

Get ready to be ass kicked by REAL bosses in Felghana. So much fun. :D

Maybe it's just because I know how these games work now, but Origin's bosses don't feel nearly as challenging as Oaths. I've beaten most of them within 2 tries whereas some bosses in Oath took me 15+ tries.

Is Epona an ancestor of Chester or something? And do you ever learn Roo-speak? Or do you just always assume they're saying they're hungry :s

The beginning part reminds me of a certainty snes rpg (i think?) but i can't seem to recall it.
The beginning sounds almost identical to Ryu's theme from the Street Fighter games.

Ryu's Theme
Ys Origin - Genesis Beyond the Beginning

Not the first indie soundtrack heavily influenced by the Ryu Theme. Another:
VVVVVV - Pushing Onward

"The Claw" character can do something about it. I won't spoil it, though.

Just finished this now as Yunica on normal. Final boss was kind of a joke after Felghana's. Didn't have any trouble with him until the third form and only because I couldn't figure out how to dodge his beam.

But you haven't fought the final...

Nevermind.

You have to watch for him charging the beam attack. When you see it/hear the noise, run beside him. Maybe even behind him, I think the drones will not attack you if you're behind him and he's using that attack (any other time they do).

He was a dick to me once and used that attack while off the side of the arena area. I still managed to dodge it, but by the time it ended it was damn close to hitting me and I had nowhere to run.

Oh, that sounds better than what I did. I just did the boost burst thing.

edit: anyway now to start it again as Hugo.

Good choice. His story is better than Yunica's, but his gameplay is my least favorite of the three (still fun though).

And from a story perspective, playing Hugo before the third character makes more sense because he actually plays a role in that story. Going from Yunica to "The Claw," you're just left wondering who he is and why was not unlocked from the start.

I don't really understand Falcom's request to change the unlock requirements for the character, but oh well.

Glad I started with Hugo then. I wanted to play a mage character after playing Adol for so long but I get what you mean about his play style. There isn't much to it.

Yea, I'm definitely enjoying his cutscenes more so far. Generally more brief and to the point.

Yunica and her 223424 friends should definitely shout up, yeah. I can't even remember half of the characters, and i honestly don't care.

Better then Hugo being a complete dick to everyone he talks to. I preferred Adol, at least he stayed quiet...

I like the third character, how he acts hard on the outside but is really a big softie. Makes for a few kind of funny scenes.

I wasn't feeling the story at all up until just now... pretty big spoilers ahead from the 2nd to last floor.

NO! Goddamnit Eponaaaa nooooo ;___;. The one character I didn't completely despise and she has to be killed off. Starting on the Demonic core now, can't wait to see how this all wraps up.

Just finished the game on Normal as Hugo. The final boss was a compete joke once I figured out his second form, I guess that's to be expected on normal difficulty. Overall, I'd say I enjoyed the game about as much as Ys: Oath, maybe a little more since now I have a reason to replay it. Gonna finish up another game from my backlog and then get started on Claw's story.

Yeah I'm not really feeling Hugo. He's a little too aloof to like. Hopefully Claw will be easier to related to.

I actually really liked him at first but as the game keeps going on he just seems to keep getting angrier and less likable.

Just finished Claw's ending spoilers ahoy!

Oh wow, I should've seen that true final boss coming. Took me about 3 tries to finally bring him down was pretty fun. I'm so glad Epona got to survive in this ending and from what I gathered by the ending screen the game continues on in some of the older games. I wish some of those games could get remakes ala Oath in Felghana, I'm pretty interested to see how the canonical story goes.

Now I've finished up Ys: Origin and Ys: Oath in Felghana. I'm tempted to finish up Yunica's path but I'm pretty sure I get the basis of her story from the other playthroughs. Now it's time to wait for another Ys game to get ported to Steam.
