Ys X: Proud Nordics, a significantly upgraded version of Ys X: Nordics with new story content and features, will launch for Switch 2 on July 31 in Japan for 7,800 yen, developer Falcom announced. It will be available both physically and digitally.

While a screenshot from the December 2024 reveal of the game features PlayStation button prompts, a Falcom representative told Gematsu the screenshot was taken during development in late 2024, at which point a platform was not yet decided.

"At present, a release has been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, and a web commercial is now available," the Falcom representative said. "Plans for other platforms, such as PlayStation 5 and PC, have yet to be determined."

I enjoyed my time with Ys X but it's not good enough for a second playthrough on this new edition.

Ys 9 > Ys 8 > Ys 10
It's disappointing to read what seems like lukewarm opinions on Ys X, quite often.

I skipped 9 because of the aeshetics (anime goth thing not for me) but loved 8 a lot and was hoping 10 would be on a similar level of quality.

I'll probably still check it out at some point though.

If everythings on the cart I'll buy it a high price. But Falcom can honestly fuck off with this shit they've pulled with Ys X. Never supporting them day 1 ever again.

Same here, I hate this stupid trend. Way to punish your biggest fans who bought the game on day 1.

I guess Persona and Dragon Quest showed they can get away with it, now Falcom wants some of that easy money for themselves.

This is the Persona 3 FES style re-release, right?

Very surprised Nintendo are paying for timed exclusivity on a game like this.

I hope this bites them in the ass with fewer day 1 sales. I hope Atlus gets it too, scummy bastards.

Yup, as far as I know, it's a separate full-priced release with no way to upgrade for owners of the original.

This is also really shitty. What the hell is going on with the jrpg publishers of late? Is it too much to ask for a complete game when it launches. Or at least offer an upgrade path so we don't have to shell out 60 dollars again for dlc content. Smh so disappointed 😞

I already got the platinum for this. Highly doubt I'll jump to this version.

First Ys game I didn't complete. I just found it boring in both story and combat.

Between the long ass delays with localizing the game and having to worry about rereleases there's no reason to be a day 1 customer of Falcom anymore. I definitely won't be there for Ys 11.

IDK man. I think JRPG fans have this "us vs the world" mentality and see it as their duty to buy up every JRPG they can. I've seen so many people in this fandom over the years say stuff like "I'll buy it because I want to support JRPGs getting made/localized, if you don't, then don't complain when they stop making them."

I can't think of any other genre where this would fly. Can you imagine the outrage if e.g. Ubisoft announced a new & improved version of Assassins Creed: Shadows just months after the original release?

I enjoyed the demo for Ys:X Nomordics but this version existing means redoing the first 10 hours of the game.

Them announcing this insured id never play it. Horrible strategy.

From my understanding this is a bit different from what Atlus does as this is the result of two different publishers, i.e
NIS and Falcom releasing two different versions.

Falcom kinda screwed everyone over by deciding to release a completely new version of the same game NIS already released. If Falcom tries to make this crap a trend I'm definitely pulling back my future support for them.

Must've been out of the loop cause didn't know the jrpg Fandom behaved like this. No wonder the publishers are taking advantage of it. And we normal people are suffering for it. I guess that's why we can't have nice things. People suffering from FOMO and low impulse control.

Didn't know there were two publishers. Sounds kinda stupid. Aren't they communicating with each other? From my point of view this is damaging to the brand and jeopardizes day 1 sales. But maybe it is like DonkeyPunchJr DonkeyPunchJr is saying. It doesn't matter because the hardcore fans are eating it up anyway, no questions asked. Just consume and move on to next product. Count me out though. Im tired of scummy publishers pulling scummy tricks like this. It's time to start voting with the wallet.

Ys X has an excellent combat system, it's different from Ys 8/9 and better imho. You just need to find the right flow.

Don't skip Ys IX, it's really fun.

It will be interesting to see how the changes get reviewed. I never got X as by the time I was planning to get it this version got advertised as coming out.

Hopefully it will come to Steam as I have no idea if I will have Switch 2 this year.

I love Falcom, but announcing this right after the vanilla version shipped in the West and then offering no clarity as to when we'll be able to upgrade our existing version of the game is bullshit. Not a good move.

I guess I'm glad I waited to play it, but this is just annoying.

I know the situation in the US is pretty bad with all the tariff nonsense, and no one knows if the stock they'll have available for pre-order will be enough for anyone who wants to get a Switch 2 on launch day. However, I'll say that here in Europe it was easy enough to secure a pre-order.

I actually locked in my pre-order early this morning for quite a decent price (€440), but I'm not sure if I'll be getting this expanded Ys X on day 1, even if the physical version is complete on cart. I'll probably wait half a year or so and get it during a sale.

Yeah, EU prices seem outright reasonable especially since taxes are rolled in.

But between Nintendo, bots, tariffs and whatever strikes Orange Man's fancy on a random day, US situation is a crapshoot.

And yeah, I will wait to get a copy. In the "olden days" I would probably import Asian or EU version if NA one goes out of stock, but now days…

well they were already kind of doing that with the no free upgrades for the ps5 ports of ys 8/9 and cold steel 3/4.

A timed exclusive then? I wonder how long this one will be, and how long until we get it in the US on other platforms. Based off no evidence at all, I'm guessing a year delay on PC release and who knows how many months depending on how much work goes on behind the scenes during the interim.

I'll still wait for the real-deal final version of Ys X on PC I guess, but it'll be a while =/

not quite, Falcom released the original Ys X in Japan, then NISA localized it for North America

Falcom then announced the upgraded release only a few months after NISA got it out (it was over a year after the initial release in Japan)

it'd be like if Peronsa 5 Royal had been announced a few months after releasing in English but over a year after releasing in Japanese

Why are you so sure they are paying? Launching on Switch 2 in Japan 50 days after the system launches is a decent strategy. Maybe they put all their resources on the port and will then put some heads on getting the other releases lined up.

This re-release is so weird. I really liked Ys X, but I agree that it's not a game that's worth returning to any time soon.
