Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods - an adult animated series based on Norse mythology | Netflix - Sept. 19

“My imagination was always really sparked by the Norse gods ... Thor, Odin, an adventure story about love and redemption and revenge set in this amazing landscape,” Snyder told Netflix. “It just really made me want to dig in and get involved.”

Of course, this isn’t your storybook version of Norse mythology — Twilight of the Gods puts the “adult” in adult animation, as you can see in the red band teaser trailer. Executive producer Deborah Snyder said, “I think there’s an expectation when you see something that Zack Snyder’s involved with, that it’s going to have really great hardcore action and that it’s going to be sexy. For all the Zack fans out there, we needed to really deliver on that.”

Cringe.

Shit animation. Over the top gore. Childish dialogue and 'SEX!'........why do they need to shout from the rooftops that this has hard core sex scenes? This is about as lowbrow as you can get. Absolute gutter content that looks like something dreamt up by a 14 year old boy who just discovered porn.

Hard pass.

This

The animation is some of the worst I've seen in a while. And everything sounds so childish and try hard.

its like they tried to make samurai jack but with over the top.

primal was low res animation but it was a fun watch. Nothing deep, just action. they dont even tlak in the show.

Netflix Greek Mythology Blood of Zeus animation was a fun watch too, didn't catch the second season yet.

Looks like something made in Shockwave Flash for Newgrounds.
Or those somewhat interactive flash porn cartoons you could find in the 2000s :messenger_grinning_sweat:
By the way "adult animated series" should always means "cartoon porn". Znyder being so immature, as FunkMiller FunkMiller miller rightly said, him using it is synonym of "Big boy cartoon with blood and some tits maybe but not too much because girls are gross".

I take Snyders work on a case by case basis.. he's a perfectly good director he's just gotten full of himself and tried to take on the writing role which he is absolutely terrible at..

So I look and there are other writers on this so.. there is hope it would be OK.. until I look at who those writers are and what they worked on
Eric Carrasco - Supergirl TV Series (actually worse than anything Snyder has done)
and one other dude who has only worked in the art department with no previous writing experience....

This has a 99.999% chance of being complete garbage.

SEGGS!

I laughed when I saw that on screen.

The animation and style look good. I would prefer something like the newest Puss in Boots movie, but this doesnt look bad.

I'm gonna laugh if halfway through Kratos shows up and kills half the cast.

Laugh even harder if JESUS shows up and does the same, then cry quietly because that's basically the truth of it, as echoed in the mournful (but rocking) tunes of Sir Christopher Lee :p

Oh, I'm sure they took it from this album

which came out in 2008. Probably where both got that "Twilight of..." association.
Fuckin incredible album. Amon was at their absolute peaks back then. Got to see em live back in 2005, outstanding performers. The frontman was drinking beer out of this comically huge horn in between sets the whole show lol, didn't miss a beat either. It was also a unique performance as the drummer cracked his crash on stage and ended up borrowing a crash from Trivium's drummer, (Travis at the time), and it didn't really go with the kit well but it created an incredibly unique performance that only we goobers in Atlanta got to see for one night only.

Fuck man....that was basically twenty years ago.

Stole the name from Dan Carlin who did Twilight of the Aesir. Give it a listen.

Snyder of course got the name from Richard Wagner. "Götterdämmerung" (Twilight of the Gods) from 1876 is the final part of his opera cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (The Ring of the Nibelung) that is based on Germanic myths just like Snyder's series.

A couple of Wikipedia quotes:
"The title is a translation into German of the Old Norse phrase ragnarök, which in Norse mythology refers to a prophesied war among various beings and gods that ultimately results in the burning, immersion in water, and renewal of the world. As with the rest of the Ring, however, Wagner's account diverges significantly from these Old Norse sources."

I'm a couple eps deep into this and it is really damned good. Super violent, lots of sex, but also a pretty strong story of revenge and a lot of norse mythos weaved in, as well as stuff I think they are fabricating on the spot. The frame rate is low, but the art aesthetic is tolerable. You can see the usual Snyder plot of a gang gathering to take on a bad guy in a quest for revenge but hey, that ain't new.

Freya as a goddess stolen from African mythos is a nice touch. The breast milk fetish started by The Boys continues :p

Finished it up. It's designed for a second season but up till the final ep it was a pretty solid action revenge story. It has actual penetrative sex in it, albeit in firelit silhouette, but WOW, haven't seen that on netflix before! And I liked how they made it VERY CLEAR that the very young character was in fact over 18 before she was roped into a threeway :p

The story itself is kinda norse god adjacent, in that they play a part but this isn't a direct retelling of any saga I'm aware of. But it has lots of norse bits in it and someone on the team was able to dig deep because there are some choice things in there you don't see too often in more mainstream Norse adaptations. It's the best of Snyder, perhaps Jay Oliva and his animation background is keeping things on track. The slo-mo is constrained (and for animation, perhaps just a money saving feature :p and the dialogue, while high on the "this sounds waaay cooler in my head than it does when folks actually say it" scale still works more often than not. Its 300-level Snyder, better than Rebel Moon DC cut Snyder, though both share a lot of things, including the female front focus, the "band of warriors" stuff, and an overly sadistic foe.

No idea what the metric for success of this type of thing is, but I hope we get more of it.

One of the things I liked was how they made Thor actually overwhelmingly powerful as one would expect a god to be. And that sequence just before the actual ending was actually kinda really mindbending. On that note, show has one of the more interesting depictions of Odin I've seen in a while.

Agreed. Thor was OP to the point you wondered by all those scrub Asgaardians even bothered to show up (other than it was a chance to get snatched up by a hot naked Valkyrie and then chill for eternity drinking mead, eating roast boar, and tapping said Valkyrie). The guy dodged what, TEN spears thrown at him across the series? I was really waiting for a Chronicles of Riddick style defeat of Thor given the way he kinda moves like the Lord Marshal and I thought Sigird would have figured it out.

I kinda wish we got LESS of Asgard, to be honest, other than the suitably bizzare depiction of Odin, the rest were just....meh. You never really got the backstory of Baldur and why the mistletoe was his weakness, where is Tyr and does he still have his hand, and the Vanir's relationship to the Aesir is muddled. Still, bringing in Tiwaz, not as Tyr, but (I think) as a precursor god was cool.
