Zelda TP Revolution Rumours Quashed

Nintendo comments on escalating situation.

Speaking exclusively to ***** today, Nintendo has moved to quash rumours currently pegging The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for Nintendo Revolution, with ‘The Mill’ claiming the GameCube version has been abandoned.

As you will know, the game was savagely delayed, as we were the first to reveal, and immediately Mario 128-inspired chat foretold of a next-generation outing for the incredible-looking new Link.


“The rumours that are currently doing the rounds are nonsense,” a Nintendo spokesman told **** this morning. “Mr Iwata and Mr Miyamoto have always maintained that Zelda: Twilight Princess will be released exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube. Of course, it will be playable on Revolution as the Revolution is backwards-compatible with the GameCube. The Revolution may of course see its own Zelda outing in the future.”

And of course, Nintendo’s comments just make sense, unlike the offending rumour. It was back in March that Nintendo showed the latest build of Zelda in video-form at GDC, as we exclusively revealed. Then we had hands-on access with the latest build, with our admittedly only half-decent shaky-cam footage which you can view here.

This news should do something to dampen the fires currently engulfing the scheduled GameCube swansong that is LOZ:TP though a fresh rumour has reached us at time of press, one you may ignore at your leisure. There is a strong chance we hear, that Zelda will come bundled with the Revolution as a 'showpiece' backwards-compatible title at launch. The wait before the final GameCube boxed version may be as long as a month.

We will more than likely be the first to confirm or debunk the Revolution bundle rumour, so keep an eye on the front page. For the record, Nintendo didn’t comment on it at time of press.

Iwata said we'd see more Revolution and possibly games before the end of the year.
When do they plan on showing it?
 
The Rev/Zelda bundle is a good idea. It should be compatible with the "shell" controller and GC controller to emphasize the Rev's functionality in playing traditional games.

Terrible idea. Not only would Nintendo miss out on many sales of the Cube version by bundling the game, it would inevitably create an impression in the minds of mainstream gamers that Twilight Princess level graphics are all the Revolution is capable of.

This in the face of a launching PS3 and the Xbox 360 in its second year. They will simply look at TP and say, "That doesn't look anywhere near as good as PS3/360!" A GameCube game makes an ill "showpiece" for Revolution hardware, Zelda or not.

I really hope that isn't true, or Nintendo is bungling the next-gen on day one.

indeed. although ***** has let me down before, a few years ago, by saying Daytona 3 was coming to Xbox.

I hope they have the Zelda info right.

As was mentioned in the other thread, it could be programmed to use more detailed assets when played on a Revolution machine. Much like Ages and Seasons were on GBA.
 
Does this finally settle it then?

I'm glad the Gamecube is getting this game. Every system deserves its to go out with a bang.

***** has been doing better with their reporting in the last couple of years. They confirmed the GBAmicro before anyone else.

Hey, at least they've gotten a quote directly from a Nintendo representative. Either they in fact have sources at Nintendo (probably NOE), or they are lieing.
 
I think ***** once again read the long thread on GAF and mad up the converstation with the Nintendo spokesperson, all in the effort of trying to own us.

As long as Nintendo has billions in the bank they'll continue to make games and consoles. Sega was kind of a different story.

The new model of the Game Boy Advance will be shown at Nintendo’s E3 press conference this year in what will be one of the most remarkable moments in recent videogame history.

The unit will be a true gaming machine and will come equipped with a large high-quality back-lit screen and analogue controls, very much, one might argue, like Sony’s PSP.

Nintendo staffers have confirmed to *****.com that preliminary hardware will be shown both at the firm’s conference and encased alongside the Nintendo Revolution on the showfloor.

Indeed, ***** has been privvy to the emergence of the next-generation of Game Boy Advance for some time, though little more than it’s E3 debut was known.

As this news breaks, perhaps the most pertinent point to be mulled is exactly how Nintendo is going to explain the situation to fans and, of course, early adopters of the Nintendo DS. The answer to this conundrum is quite possibly the most incredible climb-down the games industry has ever witnessed.

Specifically, Nintendo will unveil a suite of PDA-focussed software for the DS powered by recently licensed Palm OS technology. The machine will evolve from a pure gaming machine into a PDA equipped to play Nintendo 64 quality games. Essentially, Nintendo believes that with the right software, it has a high-powered, wireless-enabled PDA capable of playing games of a higher standard than any competing device.

Picking up the pieces, however, will be something of a PR nightmare, something that Nintendo is fully aware of. The DS, announced so soon after the PSP was unveiled by Sony, was effectively a spoiler machine, aimed at snatching away market share from SCEI. Although this has been categorically denied by the Kyoto giant, the revelation that a new Game Boy, which in essence appears to be a PSP with a Nintendo badge, confirms this belief beyond any doubt.

The new Game Boy will be based around existing Nintendo GameCube hardware and will be, when it launches in the US and Japan towards the end of this year, the most powerful handheld console on the planet. ***** also believes it likely that the machine will make use of GameCube software. Revolution connectivity was confirmed.

By way of damage control, Nintendo must now cling to its ever-present third-pillar line regarding the DS. The firm has always claimed that the Dual Screen represents not a furthering of the Game Boy range, but something quite different. It would seem that those well-placed foundations will now be required to carry the hefty bulk of a complete reversal of application for a machine that was launched as a gaming device and will, within months, have its key role significantly altered.

No, a darker, more ominous sequel with a fascinating and unique gameplay mechanic that will be last AAA title released on a system in the midst of a console transition.

:lol The fact that this is on Sp*ng leads me to not believe it. That guy could have genuinely been talking to someone who works for Nintendo but he was probably being mislead or he completely misinterpreted whatever was told him.

I'd rather believe an actual console market analyst over Sp*ng and Nintendo fansite "journalists".

BTW a mod needs to change the title of this thread to warn readers of its impending inaccuracy

IMO it's a lot more believable that TP will be released on Gamecube, pretty much as we've seen it, with some additional length, improved animations and polish - than it is to believe it'll be released on Revolution with a hastily tacked on control system and upgraded nextgen visuals.

Hmmm. Maybe they could make an enhanced version and release it with Revolution. If the game is over 100 hours, the GC disc is probably already filled up. I doubt they could fit extra textures and features on it. The larger Revolution disc would remedy this. It might not be a bad idea idea to bundle it in with Revolution along with a traditional controller shell.

It's $pong, and an unnamed Nintendo rep. Not untrue, but not reliable, and certainly not a rumor "(s)quashed" or whatever.
 
An unsubstantiated "rumor" started by Nintendo fanboys who wish to see Revolution sales propelled by a port of a GC game that's been in development for over 2 years.

Nintendo has never said anything about Zelda TP, except that it will be on Gamecube. Why don't we all just shut up about which platform it will appear on (Gamecube) until we hear something official from Nintendo (like they've said a few dozen times - GAMECUBE), before we start guessing which console it will be on (GAMECUBE!).
