I think I agree with you with what I've seen (up partway through Pain). The first arc is easily the worst when it comes to pacing.

The beginning wasent as bad to me back in the day, mostly I didnt have to deal with the commercials, I was on a naruto fanboy high, and I liked gaara as a character including his fights so it was all gravy to me.
