Titanfall Gameplay Footage (Embargo Lifted)

Let's go ahead and start sending the peasant beta codes now Respawn!?
I just know I will be on the very last wave of the invites. :/

The Sidewinder is effective versus ground forces, though, which gives it an obvious advantage over the Archer. The Archer does so much damage, though.

I think it will ultimately come down to the kind of playstyle I adapt. I'm sure the retail release will have even more anti-Titan weapons.

About the dumb AI, once someone here said they were just to be farmed like a MOBA it clicked with me, that's exactly what they are there for.

Sort of eh, I do wish they were a little smarter.

Yeah, that's the only thing I find to be meh about the game so far, is having AI characters.

Maybe down the road, they'll put out a Ground War TDM type gametype and limit the amount of Titans that can be deployed at once?

Ok. Basic purpose is to help players get their Titan faster. This applies to good and bad players.

They are also there to direct players to where conflict is. A.I heads to objectives, which is what players should do in objective based games. Way too many FPS games have objectives which mostly get ignored by players.

They are also there to keep the flow of combat going. It emulates the franticness of way more players by having 12 humans, 12 Auto Titans and then having A.I runts running around. Its feels more like an actual battle, as apposed to some arena with 8 dudes just gunning each-other.

According to Respawn, the A.I will be there as part of the narrative, as well as being useful to your team/enemy team since you can hack certain A.I to fight for you, thereby creating more difficult waves to force at your enemy, giving you time to get on with the job.

They are also there to make the humans feel good, since they are lowly grunts and you are the Captain that has all the intel and cool stuff. If A.I could do all the cool stuff, humans would be redundant. Think of it as an army where the cannon-fodder is just dumb grunts getting murdered until the leader comes to save the day and attempt to change the tide of battle.

++

And don't they also provide attrition - essentially making them farmable victory points? I don't get why people are hounding on this concept. The grunt AI isn't meant to give you a challenge.

The AIs seem balanced enough that they're fun to kill (especially in large groups), but can be safely ignored if you just want to kill Pilots and Titans.

What would you say stands out the most to you regarding what makes TitanFall satisfying? Gun play, mechs, pace; etc?
The overall level of polish. Every single mechanic in the game that I've messed with feels very gratifying to use. Nothing feels "janky" or half-baked.

I think the game looks like a lot of fun. That's obviously the most important thing. Gameplay looks absolutely next-gen. Graphics not so much. Maybe it's because watching a stream doesn't nearly do it justice.

The matches don't last long enough for them to be significantly more difficult, IMO. I mean, you can die fast and why would you spend too much time on AIs who don't contribute all that much to yours and your team's advancement toward victory condition when you can target players who are much more likely to target you while you spend time on grunts? They're things to shoot at on the way somewhere or when clearing out a hardpoint...little bonuses toward your Attition score in that mode and a very small reward of a few seconds off of Titanfall timer. A roughly ten-minute match length and everyone being fast and dangerous doesn't really make farming AI a viable strategy for the duration when the drop pods landings they come from seem more or less randomly-placed. This game may have an equivalent to creeps, but they can't be exploited all that well like a real MOBA.

I do question the usefulness of hacking the Spectres, instead of just killing them and moving on.

Getting killed while hacking is very embarrassing, because you ask yourself if you should have even been bothering in the first place.

One twitch streamer said that EB games gave him a code for pre-ordering the xbox one version, I thought pre-orders for beta were not a thing?

Played the beta for 5 hours. Opinion of a long-time CoD and BF4 player (bored of CoD now though):

Titanfall is freaking amazing.

Man, watching some of the footage, I think I'm too old for this game. It looks so fast paced. I don't have those kind of reflexes anymore, if I ever did.

To blow my brains out?

Smart pistol locks onto AI and players to give you more leeway to spend time maneuvering and parkouring around. Just don't expect to put down players as easily as using a standard pistol or primary firearm. Game is very platform-y and that gun helps you bridge the distance of focus on environment navigation and being able to inflict damage.

This is kinda what I've been thinking too. Looks awesome for sure, but yeah, it's brain meltingly fast and frantic.

Getting killed by the Smart Pistol doesn't feel cheap or frustrating. Every death I've had from it felt fair, and I figured they could have killed me just as easily with a "real" gun.

If the AI was at least normal single-player difficulty I think a lot of people would warm up to the idea.

But right now they seem like moving targets that explode into XP upon death. Fodder. Imagine if they chucked you ammo when you're running out, or heck give you their gun or rocket launcher, or rushed to defend you if you got hurt, or actively provided support for a friendly AI Titan, or point if they see a cloaked Pilot's suit shimmering in the distance, or jump on a grenade to save you, or grab enemy players to help you get a shot, or sacrifice dozens of themselves climbing on an enemy Titan to slow or topple it.

There's so much more they can be than inaccurate fodder.

Man this looks like so much fun. I've never owned a MS console before, but I think I'm going to have to go out and get a cheap 360 to play this badboy.

Edit: I haven't really been following this game, but wasn't there something a while back about the devs saying that there weren't mechs in the game? Those are definitely mechs.

Sequel, then.

I can understand the implementation of AI though. I know a lot of casual FPS players that get turned off MP because they suck too much, and the notion of getting killed seconds everytime bothers them too much.

From a design perspective of drawing in that audience, creating a battlefield that's realistic to how the game's been marketed ( pure chaos of tons of people and titans ), the AI implementation as it is now makes sense.

It would be nice for there to be more depth to it, but in terms of creating the 'Titanfall experience' of farm, chaos and easing in noobs, they seem more than sufficient and done their job admirably.

Respawn: Don't call them mecha! They're not mechs! They're Titans!

It feels like they think mech is a dirty word that may turn off players who don't like mecha in their shooter? I dunno?

I think they wanted to avoid the comparison to the traditionally slower, lumbering types rather than the fast, large human-styled ones they're introducing. I think they thought that the term "mech" conjured up images of much slower walking tanks. Titans are very un-mech-like in that regard.

I also believe that the AI bots also can highlight your position on the map, so that also affects your tactical approach? Not something you can ignore if they spot you?

You firing on a Bot also highlights your location, so you run the risk of enemy knowing where you are or shortening your titan drop.

Me as well sadly. Still hoping I get a PC beta code though. Would certainly like to see what the fuss is really about.

Apparently they've implemented aim-assisted controller support for the PC version too, so I might do a little better than in the BF4 beta. I'm sure that's very much a 'might', though, as the speed of this will likely offset any gain I get from the added aim-assist...

I would guess that by referring to them using the same in-game language helps strengthen the brand identity. Also talking about a game with 'mechs' in could be any of a hundred titles whereas if you call them 'titans' it's more apparent you're talking about Titanfall. It all helps with the game's exposure.
